Concert: City Hall, Barker's Pool, Sheffield, Yorkshire
"A POP concert programme signed by Paul McCartney and George Harrison at a Sheffield City Hall gig just as they hit the big time is set to go under the hammer. When The Beatles were signed up for the Montez-Rowe tour they were just one of six supporting acts with a short slot before the interval. But by the time the tour came to Sheffield - on March 16 1963 - the band was at the top of the charts and Beatlemania had arrived! So when Worksop shop assistant Julie Allman was sneaked backstage by a pal who worked for Sheffield Council and bumped into Paul and George in a corridor, she asked for their autographs. Now the programme - also signed by Chris Montez and Tommy Rowe - is set to fetch up to ￡1,000 at auction. Julie, now Mrs Barnett, said: "We originally booked to see Chris Montez, who was quite famous at the time, but by the time the show arrived everyone was excited about The Beatles. "I got Chris Montez's autograph in his dressing room and I bumped into George Harrison and Paul McCartney in a corridor so I got them to sign as well." The programme has spent the last 45 years in an old suitcase in the attic. "I'm not entirely sure why I held onto it," Julie said, "I think it was perhaps just a memento of a really good evening. "We were having a clear out recently and I came across it again, so I had it valued. I was a bit shocked when they told me what it was worth. "I knew obviously that Beatles signatures were collectable but I thought you had to have all four for it to be valuable." Auctioneer Craig Bewick, from Brown and Co will conduct the sale as part of their Summer Fine Art and Antiques Auction in Brigg this Saturday. He said: "It's a wonderful story and we can be sure the signatures are genuine - there are a lot of fakes about. "The programme is rare and early. We're already getting inquiries from all over this country and there are a lot of collectors in America and Japan, so we could get international interest too.''"

"A search is on for "The Dingwall 19" a select group of devoted music fans who turned out 48 years ago to hear a then-little-known quartet from Liverpool.
The young mop-headed group turned out to be The Beatles, on their first ever mini-tour of Scotland as a four-piece.
The soon-to-be Fab Four of John, Paul, George and Ringo went on to become the biggest bands in the world ever. But their humble beginnings only attracted a "crowd" of 19 to a gig at Dingwall Town Hall in Ross-shire.
At the time, on the night of January 4, 1963, the "meagre and muted" audience did not know what The Beatles would actually become.
Just a few miles along the road, at the Spa Pavillion at Strathpeffer, a massive crowd of 1,200 had crammed in to hear local heroes, The Melotones.
Dingwall Business Association is now trying to use that momentous evening to raise the profile of the town as a shopping and visitor centre.
They are erecting a plaque on the town hall wall to commemorate The Beatles' visit, just ten days before their first number one hit Please Please Me was released.
They want to get as many of the 19 crowd as possible together for the unveiling of the tribute. Association member Billy Shanks, 65, said: "I actually looked in at the town hall and decided I would rather hear the Melotones.
"Unfortunately for The Beatles, most of the town did the same. The association would love to get as many of the 19 from the town hall back in Dingwall for the plaque unveiling and special Beatles night.
"But some are apparently as far away as New Zealand, Canada and the US and some will no longer be with us."
Mr Shanks is keen to discover whether local rumour is true that The Beatles actually stopped playing their Dingwall gig early then drove to Strathpeffer to listen to the Melodrones, comprising of local lads brother Eck, Jimmy and Willie Wilson and Dodo Ross.
The 1963 tour took in Dingwall, Bridge of Allan near Stirling, Aberdeen's Beach Ballroom, Keith and Nairn.
Mr Shanks added: "If you were at the event in 1963, please get in touch with the organisers and you will be treated as a special non-paying guest on the night.
"The first 20 paying customers will also receive their first drink at the bar at 1963 prices."
The plaque unveiling takes place at Dingwall Town Hall on April 8, with a tribute band called The Upbeat Beatles."

ビートルズはこのBBCの人気番組『サタデー･クラブ (Saturday Club)』の収録を本来1963年3月11日に予定していたが、ジョン･レノンがひどい風邪をひいていたのと、ラジオ･ルクセンブルグ (Radio Luxembourg) に出演と重なったため、この日のライヴ演奏の生放送に変更になった。このラジオ番組に彼らが出演するのは2度目で、初出演は1963年1月22日であった。ビートルズは9:00amに到着して短いリハーサルを行い、番組は10:00am～12:00pmに生放送された。彼らは6曲を演奏したが、その内の3曲は3月22日に発売予定のアルバム『Please Please Me』から選曲されている。

トミー･ロウ (Tommy Roe) とクリス･モンテス (Chris Montez) を看板スターとするビートルズのUKツアーは、1963年3月10日・11日の2日はショーの予定がなく休日だったが、ビートルズは3月11日にラジオ･ルクセンブルグ (Radio Luxembourg) の番組『ザ･フライデー･スペクタキュラー (The Friday Spectacular)』に出演する。彼らが同番組に出演するのは4回目、そしてこれが最後となった。過去においては1962年10月8日・同11月16日、1963年1月21日に出演している。ラジオ･ルクセンブルグ (Radio Luxembourg) は英国向けの民間ラジオ放送では最も初期の放送局の1つで、1960年代のはじめには多くのティーンエージャーにとって重要なロックンロールのソースであった。フライデー･スペクタキュラー (The Friday Spectacular) はEMIによって収録される番組の1つで、同社のレコードの宣伝広告を目的としていた。この番組の収録はロンドンのマンチェスター･スクエア (Manchester Squre) にある本社ビル「ＥＭＩハウス (ＥＭＩ House)」で行われた。ビートルズはEMIハウスでインタビューを受け、その合間にはスタジオ録音の『Please Please Me』と『Ask Me Why』が流された。この収録は

1963(昭和38)年03月16日(土) ロンドンのブロードキャスティング・ハウス第3Aスタジオで、ジョンが風邪をひいていて収録がキャンセルになっていたBBCラジオ番組「サタディ・クラブ」の穴埋めで、この日の「サタディ・クラブ」に生出演した。午前9時からのリハーサルに間に合うようタクシーで駆けつけ、午前10時から2時間の生放送の間に「I Saw Her Standing There」「Misery」「Too Much Monkey Business」「I'm Talking About You」「Please Please Me」「The Hippy Hippy Shake」を演奏。その後、225キロも離れたシェフィールドのシティ・ホールで開かれるトミー・ロウ、クリス・モンテスとのツアーへ急いだ。
1964(昭和39)年03月16日(月) トゥイッケナム・フィルム・スタジオで映画「ア・ハード・デイズ・ナイト」の撮影。この日はスタジオの食堂でウィルフリッド・ブランベル演じるポールのおじいさんがリンゴに「本を読むのはやめて、仲間のことも見捨てて遊びに行け」とそそのかすシーンを撮影した。リンゴ以外のメンバーの撮影はなく、ジョージはブライアン・エプスタインとともに「サタディ・クラブ」に出演するシラ・ブラックの番組収録の様子を見に行った。

前年のクリスマスセールを当て込んだアルバム「RUBBER SOUL」が好調を維持していた1966年の年明けから、ビートルズは3カ月の長い休暇に入った。ジョージは1月にパティと結婚。2月になると、ブライアン・エプスタインが経営する事務所は、夏に日本、西ドイツ、米国でツアーを予定していると発表した。
4人が表立った活動を休んでいた66年3月16日、ピーター＆ゴードンの新曲「Woman」が英国の音楽誌ニュー・ミュージカル・エクスプレス（NME）のチャート「トップ30」の23位に初登場した。ストリングスを導入したドラマチックなバラードだったが、翌週に順位を一つあげただけで圏外に去った。
先に発売された米国では、ビルボード誌の最高14位まで上がるヒットになった。レコードにクレジットされた作曲者「バーナード・ウェッブ」は、パリに住む学生でインタビューはとても難しい謎の人物と紹介されていた。コンサートでは「バーナード・ウェッブよ、永遠なれ」という垂れ幕が掲げられるほど人気も出てきた。
ところが、この曲がNMEにチャートインして間もなく、ポールは自分が変名で書いた曲だという事実を認めた。「僕らの歌が売れるのは、レノン＆マッカートニーの名前の威力によるものなのかどうか見極めたかった」作者名を別名にしてレノン＆マッカートニーの名を伏せても、果たしてレノン＆マッカートニーの作品はヒットするかどうかを確かめてみたかった、というのだ。
ピーター＆ゴードンのピーター・アッシャーは、ポールの恋人ジェーン・アッシャーの兄。このころまでポールはロンドンのアッシャー家に居候しており、ピーターとは同居人という仲でもあった。
ポールが提供した彼らのデビュー曲「愛なき世界」は、64年に英米両国で1位に輝くミリオン・セラーになった。次の提供曲「2人だけのパラダイス」は英国で9位のヒット。3曲目「逢いたくないさ」は米国で16位まで上がった。
「Woman」は約1年半ぶりの提供曲だった。世間の注目が少し冷めたころを見計らい、ポールが純粋に自作曲に対する評価を試そうと思いついたのかもしれない。
「あの曲は気に入っていた。ビートルズのバージョンはもっと良かった。まあ、よかったよ。まあまあだったかな」。ポールは変名で発表した結果をそう評価している。

ピーター＆ゴードンとは別に、ジョンとポールは他人のために多くの自作曲を提供している。恩恵を受けたのは、ほとんどがエプスタインの事務所に所属するアーティスト。ビートルズとしては未発表の曲も多い。
ビリー・J・クレーマーの本名は、ウィリアム・アシュトン。真ん中の「J」はジョンが「すごく聞こえがよくなる」と提案して付けられた。ちょうど息子のジュリアンが誕生した時期と重なる。
彼がフロント・マンになった「ビリー・J・クレーマー＆ザ・ダコタス」のデビュー・シングルA面は、ビートルズのファースト・アルバムでジョージがボーカルをとった「Do You Want To Know A Secret」だった。ジョンがディズニー映画から着想を得たという甘いムードの曲は、NMEの63年6月5日付チャートで、前週に同時1位だったビートルズの「From Me To You」を押しのけて単独1位になっている。B面はポールの「I'll Be On My Way」。
次は「Bad To Me」（NME最高1位、2週連続）。B面の「I Call Your Name」は、ビートルズが録音するよりも先に発表した。その後も「I'll Keep You Satisfied」（同4位）、「Form A Window」（同13位）とヒット曲を次々に提供してもらった。
エプスタイン一派でリバプール出身の4人組「フォーモスト」には、ジョンの作品を提供した。デッカのオーディションで演奏した「Hello Little Girl」（同12位）と彼らのためにつくった「I'm In Love」（同12位）。
女性歌手シラ・ブラックは、リバプールで昼はタイピスト、夜はビートルズが出演するキャバーン・クラブのクローク係を手伝った経験もあった。デビュー曲には、デッカ・オーディションの演奏曲「Love Of The Loved」が選ばれた。63年10月、1週だけNMEで30位になり面目を保った。
続いてシラに贈った「It's For You」は最高8位に。68年、英国国営放送（BBC）がテレビ・シリーズ「シラ」の放映が決まると、ポールは主題歌に「Step Inside Love」（同7位）をささげている。
デッカ・オーディションの演奏曲では、ほかにアップルジャックスという6人組が64年7月、「Like Dreamers Do」（同23位）をヒットさせている。「全米制覇」を成し遂げたこの時期は、ビートルズの「捨て曲」でも十分に勢いがあったことがわかる。
レノン＆マッカートニーの名を看板にしても成功しなかった例もある。
63年7月、リバプールの若手歌手トミー・クイックリーが発表したポールの「Tip Of My Tongue」はその典型だろう。無理もない。ビートルズは62年11月、2枚目のシングル・セッションでこの曲を演奏してみせたが、ジョージ・マーティンが気に入らず、即座にお蔵入りとなっていた。
64年5月、マイク・シャノンと組んだストレンジャーズは「One And One Is Two」をリリースしたが、これもずっこけた。実は、2人が同年1月のパリ公演中にビリー・J・クレーマーのために書いた曲だったが、ジョンは気に入っていなかった。録音も完了したビリーに「これを歌ったらお前は終わりだぜ」と忠告。ビリーはその言葉に従った。
ビートルズが録音を試みたものの途中で放り投げた曲もある。ポールが映画「HELP！」のサウンド・トラック用につくった「That Means A Lot」だ。テレビ番組で知り合った米国ヒューストン生まれの歌手P・J・プロビーに譲られた。それでも65年10月、P・Jにとって6作目の英国トップ30のヒットになっている。
