ビートルズ2本目の主演映画「ＨＥＬＰ！（4人はアイドル）」（92分）は1965年2月23日、米国・フロリダ半島の南東に位置する英国領バハマ諸島（当時）で撮影が始まった。
前作「Ａ ＨＡＲＤ ＤＡＹ’Ｓ ＮＩＧＨＴ」の成功に気をよくした映画会社「ユナイテッド・アーティスツ」は、予算を約100万ドルに倍増し、カラー映画で制作することを前年10月に発表していた。
前作は、ロンドンの路地裏など地味なロケ地で撮影されたモノクロ映画だったにもかかわらず、ビートルズがビートルズ自身を演じ、彼らのシュールリアリスティックなユーモアが受けて、興行的に大成功した。
対照的に「ヘルプ」は、リンゴに贈られた指輪をめぐる陰謀にビートルズの面々が巻き込まれるコメディー・スリラー。南国バハマのビーチやアルプスでのスキー・シーンなどロケ地の話題も豊富で、前作とは明らかに毛色の違う作品になることが予想された。
ところで撮影場所になぜバハマが選ばれたのか。コロンブスが上陸して「新大陸」発見とされたサン・サルバトル島など約700の島々と約2400の岩礁からなる群島には、ちょっとしたわけがある。
ビートルズの経理担当だったウォルター・ストラックという男は、ビートルズの税金対策のために銀行口座をバハマに開設していた。ストラックは口座開設の準備のために１年間もバハマに滞在し、ビートルズが買うことになっていた家に住んでいた。そこでの撮影はバハマ当局への配慮もあった、というわけだ。
実際、ビートルズは映画プロデューサーのウォルター・シェンソンとバハマにプロダクション会社を設立し、ストラックが管理していた。残念ながら67年にポンドの切り下げがあったときには、8000ポンドの損失を被った。ポール流の解説によれば「悪いが家を売ってしまったから、来てもらうわけにはいかない」という結末になったらしい。「何となく詐欺的な行為」という後ろめたさがあったことを認めている。
そんな裏の理由はともかく、どんより曇った2月のロンドンよりバハマ諸島の撮影に異を唱えるものはいるはずがない。ビートルズは3月9日まで滞在し、大勢の観光客が見守る中、順調に撮影をこなしていった。その後、オーストリア・ロケを経てロンドンに戻り、サウンド・トラック・アルバム作りも含めた6月中旬まで、4人は映画作りに没頭する。
映画タイトルは当初「エイト・アームズ・トゥ・ホールド・ユー」と新聞に発表された。ところが新曲に適さないタイトルだ、と気づいた映画監督リチャード・レスターが助け舟を出した。
レスターはもともと脚本のタイトルに「ヘルプ ヘルプ」と付けたがっていた。だが、米国脚本家協会には同名の作品が登録されていた。最後に感嘆符をつけさえすれば法律上の問題がない、との弁護士の助言を受けてタイトル「ＨＥＬＰ！」が生まれた。
タイトル曲はジョンとポールが4月4日につくりあげた。「ヘルプの撮影は退屈だった」。映画については否定的なコメントを残しているジョンだが、タイトル曲の歌詞と、その歌詞が表現している自己認識には誇りを持っていた。
「後になって、僕は助けを求めて本当に大きな声で叫んでいたことがわかった。だから、あれは僕の太ったエルヴィス時代だったといえる。映画を見てごらんよ。彼は――僕――はとても太っているし、とっても不安定で、完全に自分を見失っていた」（Ｐｌａｙｂｏｙ ｉｎｔｅｒｖｉｅｗ 1980年9月）
歌っていることはあくまでも真実であり、本当に助けを求めていたのだと語っている。昨年発売されたＤＶＤでは、映画制作中、彼らがマリフアナ漬けの生活だったことを、レスター監督らが明らかにしている。
アルバムのジャケット写真は、左から右へジョージ、ジョン、ポール、リンゴと並ぶ。4人は手旗信号を持ち、それぞれＨ、Ｅ、Ｌ、Ｐを示している。米国盤はジョージ、リンゴ、ジョン、ポールの順になっているため「ＨＰＥＬ」となる。旧ソ連盤は並ぶ順がまったく逆で「ＰＬＥＨ」と4人が叫んでいることになる。
映画は7月29日にロンドンのパビリオン劇場でプレミア公開された。スリラータッチでギャグ満載のコメディー映画は世界中で大ヒットした。日本でロードショー公開前に特別公開された際には、機動隊員が動員され、興奮した観客にスクリーンを切られることを恐れた映画館が、スクリーンに保険をかけたという逸話が残っている。

【1964年2月23日】3回目となるこの年の出演で、やっとジョンの真骨頂の見せ場がやってきます。力強く始まる「Twist And Shout」がオープニング・ナンバー。ア～ア～で始まりショート・バージョンのライヴアレンジはまだこの時点で出来ておらず、スタジオ・バージョン通りのイントロでフルコーラスが演奏されました。続いてこれもエドサリバンショウでは初めて演奏する「Please Please Me」。ジョン寄りのカメラで、今まで以上にジョンに比重が置かれたカメラワークとなっており、まさにこれは「ジョンの回」とも言うべきジョンの貢献度が高いものです。わずか3曲の出演でしたが、ナンバー1ヒット曲「I Want To Hold Your Hand」は外せないとして、他の回で演奏していない曲をあえてここにぶつけてきたところに意図的なものを感じます。しかもそれが両曲ともジョンがメインとなる曲で、「リーダーはオレだ！」と言わんばかりの熱演を展開しています。

1963年2月23日放送の「DICK BIONDI SHOW」は、アメリカで初めてビートルズを紹介した番組として特筆すべきものです。「プリーズ・プリーズ・ミー」はスタジオ・バージョンをオンエアしています。この「プリーズ・プリーズ・ミー」こそ、アメリカのファンが初めて耳にしたビートルズなのです。ビートルズが初めて渡米する約1年前のこの日、アメリカで初めてビートルズがオンエアされた、その歴史的瞬間です。

Medley of really short outtakes recorded during the Sgt. Pepper sessions. On
06 December 1966 The Beatles recorded Christmas messages for the pirate stations Radio London and Radio Caroline. Afterwards they spent some time rehearsing When I'm Sixty-Four, before two takes of the rhythm track were recorded. Sgt. Pepper was recorded over four days. On
01 February 1967 The Beatles taped nine takes of the rhythm track, though only the first and last of these were complete. They recorded drums, bass and two guitars - the latter played by McCartney and Harrison. The recording of Fixing A Hole began on
09 February 1967. The Beatles used Regent Sound Studio in London as Abbey Road was unavailable. It was the first time the group used another studio to record for EMI. The Beatles began recording Good Morning Good Morning on 8 February 1967. They recorded eight takes, the final of which was considered best. The first seven takes of Mr. Kite were recorded on 17 February 1967, the day the Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever single was released in the UK. Take eight was the best, and onto this McCartney added his bass part. The Beatles spent an eight-hour night time session on 28 February 1967 rehearsing Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds without any recording taking place. Getting Better began on Thursday
09 March. Seven takes were recorded of the rhythm track, being made up of guitars, bass and drums, plus piano from George Martin - played by the strings of the instrument being directly struck. She's Leaving Home did not feature any musical instruments played by The Beatles. Instead it had a string backing, with a harp, violins, violas, cellos and a double bass. It was scored by Mike Leander, a freelance producer and arranger, because George Martin was unavailable at the short notice demanded by McCartney. Sgt Pepper (Reprise) was recorded on Saturday
01 April 1967 in Abbey Road's vast studio one. Between 7pm and 6am The Beatles firstly recorded nine takes of the rhythm track, with McCartney singing a guide vocal. They then overdubbed vocals to take nine, along with extra instrumentation. George Harrison was the only Beatle present during the recording of Within You Without You. He and Neil Aspinall played tamburas while Indian musicians performed traditional instruments.
