ザ･ビートルズの『Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band』は、史上最高にアイコニックなアルバム・ジャケットの座をいまだ維持し続けている。ポール・マッカートニーの着想から、イギリスのポップ・アーティスト、ピーター・ブレイクと妻のジャン・ハワースによる最終デザインに至るまで、これは単なるアルバム・ジャケットの枠を超えている。当時を象徴する見事なモダン・アート作品なのだ。このアートワークは、当時としては画期的なデザインだった。また、制作費用が3,000ポンド（現在では5万ポンド以上に相当する）と破格で、当時のポップ・アルバムのジャケットでは最高額である。コンセプトは、ザ・ビートルズが「サージェント・ペパーズ・ロンリー・ハーツ・クラブ・バンド」に扮して登場し、今ちょうどコンサートを終えたところで影響力の大きな人々の集団に囲まれている、というものだ。合計58人が、最終版のアートワークに登場している。ジャケットに登場した人々は、ジョン、ポール、ジョージ、ピーター・ブレイク、ジャン・ハワース、そしてロンドンの美術品商、ロバート・フレイザーが共同で作ったリストから選ばれた。イエス・キリストとアドルフ・ヒトラーは、掲載には不適切とされ、マハトマ・ガンジーやレオ・ゴーシーといった人々は、別の理由で削除された。また、エルヴィス・プレスリーの顔がないのも気になるが、これはポール・マッカートニーが後年語っているが、「あまりに重要で、雲の上の存在すぎて、口にするだけでも畏れ多い存在」だったからだという。最終ヴァージョンに残った人々は、文化人や重要人物、さらにはザ・ビートルズのメンバーが関心を持つ人々が並ぶ魅惑的な顔ぶれだ。「Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band」の歌詞のように、「皆さんも長年、このバンドのことは知っているだろう。それでは、『Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band』のジャケットに掲載されている残りの人々を皆さんに紹介しよう……」

‡1964(昭和39)年01月22日(水)のやはりパリ・オリンピアの音源を収録。こちらはナレーターが喋るバックに流れる「This Boy」、途中からの収録の「Long Tall Sally」、「Twist And Shout」など、いずれも断片ですが、いずれも初登場音源。このように、今まで1964年のパリ公演を収録したタイトルは数多くありましたが、日付がいい加減だったり、収録曲もごちゃまぜになっているものしかありませんでした。もちろん正確なセットリストのみならず演奏曲すら不明なツアーなだけにそれも致し方ない部分がありましたが、本作はこれら音源を精査し、現在考えうる最も正確な日付、曲順にて収録しています。なお、ディスクの後半はインタビューを収録しています。

★1964(昭和39)年01月、ニューヨークのタレント事務所ジェネラル・アーチスツ・コーポレーション（GAC）の副社長のノーマン・ワイスは所属タレントのトリニ・ロペスとともにパリにいた。ビートルズのステージに出演していた関係でブライアン・エプスタインとノーマンはパリで初対面となる。
★やがて、アメリカ初公演の熱狂振りを見たノーマンはビートルズのアメリカ・ツアーは大きなビジネス・チャンスとばかりに、全米ツアーの契約をNEMSエンタープライズと結んだ。
★GAC側は総売り上げの10％を要求したものの、ブライアンは頑なに抵抗して最終的に取り分は5％で手を打つことに成功している。

"So we'll never know if Percy did or didn't make recordings of the Beatles and wipe them off.
Peter. He definitely made other recordings for Brian Epstein and the Beatles. One of which we found in a box that day in the studio in 1977. But he may well have made more and wiped them off too.
Really?
Peter. Yes. Brian Epstein was a regular visitor to the record shop and knew Grandpa well. Brian had a record shop too of course, NEMS, in the City centre. He sold all the top tunes of the day, LPs and sheet music but he would come to Grandpa's record shop to hear some of the one off records that Grandpa had from the States and the two of them would sit in the shop chatting and listening to R&B and country tunes. Brian would also ask Grandpa to record many of the Beatles' early radio appearances and put them onto disc, which he did. And it was one of those that we found that day in 1977.
What was on the disc?
Peter. It was a 7 inch 45 rpm acetate of 'Some Other Guy'; 'Beautiful Dreamer' and 'Keep Your Hands Off My Baby', recorded from an appearance on BBC Saturday Club in 1963.
Really? And what happened to that disc?
Peter. It continued to sit in a box in the house until 1990, when we sold it at Sotheby's in London. It was in the same sale as the rest of the Studio equipment.

"AFTER half a century and a worldwide search, the ECHO has found a Merseyside couple mentioned during a landmark Beatles broadcast.
The hunt for Elaine McGerrity began when Stuart Leaver, who recorded all of the Beatles early radio broadcasts, asked the newspaper to look for a woman who had a record dedicated to her on Saturday Club, the BBC music show on the Light Programme hosted by Brian Matthew.
Mr Leaver, now 70, said: "After they had played Some Other Guy, Brian Matthew said that he had a request from a man called Mike on behalf of a Miss Elaine McGerrity, from Mendip Road, Birkenhead.
"I recorded all of those programmes and I always wondered who Elaine McGerrity was, and what her relationship was with Mike. I wondered if they ended up getting married, or if they ever went to see The Beatles."
The show was recorded on January 26, 1963, two weeks after the release of Please Please Me. They performed Some Other Guy, Love Me Do, Please Please Me, Keep Your Hands Off My Baby and Beautiful Dreamer.
A few days after the story ran, Mike Hayes - the Mike who made the dedication - contacted the ECHO to say that he and Elaine - now Elaine Hayes, 68 - did indeed marry.
The 68-year-old said: "We were aware that there had been a recording, but we had no idea how to get a copy of it.
"It was a real surprise to see our story in the paper.
"Those days were a very exciting point in our lives and Elaine and I were both delighted to hear that a copy of the recording still existed."
The ECHO put the couple in touch with Mr Leaver, who has given them a copy of the programme.
Mr Hayes added: "It has been very exciting for us. We're going to get the family round and all have a listen at Christmas.
"We're so pleased to have a copy of it, and so grateful to Stuart Leaver for keeping hold of a little piece of history.""

"Lads went shopping. Paul and George bought slacks. George a shirt in Regent St. This was before the Sat Club recording and we lost them for a while. Back to Lower Regent Studios for recording talent spot. Met Patsy Ann Noble, Rog Whittaker, Gary Marshall, a really good show. Also on the bill was a Birkenhead singer. At about 8.15 the boys went to Brians room in the Mayfair for a Daily Mail interview. I parked the gear and joined them later... We left London at about 10 o'clock, stopping at 'Fortes' on M1 for large dinner - bought by the Beatles - and so homeward bound."
