Atsuko Maeda – HomeStages Season 2 Episode 7 | New York Kathak Festival
Vol.2
In Japan, people have reacted to the pandemic in a unique way. They’ve shared images of a mystical, mermaid-like being believed to ward off plagues. Amabie, as this being is known, is an auspicious yokai—a class of supernatural spirits popularized through Japanese folklore that were first documented in 1846. The creature has fishy scales, long hair, three fin-like legs, and a beak, and emerged from the sea.
Inspired by the image of this mysterious Amabie, Atsuko Maeda choreographed Amabie Nrityang. Tabla by Jyunzo Tateiwa and sitar by Keisuke Muto.
She follows with Jeeya, a composition choreographed by Sanjukta Sinha. Vocals by Mirande Shah.
This episode is sponsored by a gift from The Kathak Ensemble & Friends — Janaki & Gary Patrik.
