The Dolphins' offensive line may have had a rough 2004 season, but it looks like many of the same faces will be back in the starting lineup.
While talking with the media for the first time Friday at the team's training facility, offensive line coach Hudson Houck indicated he was set at four positions — with left tackle being the lone spot up for grabs.
If the Dolphins opened the season this week, the starting line would be: Stockar McDougle, right tackle; Rex Hadnot, right guard; Seth McKinney, center; and Jeno James, left guard. McDougle started 54 games in five seasons with the Lions before signing with Miami as a free agent. Hadnot (seven starts), McKinney (16) and James (14) return from last season.
"I think we're in pretty good shape as far as that goes," Houck said of the line's level of experience. "Now, we are young. But they're fairly experienced.
"At left tackle, we've got a couple guys over there fighting for it and we'll see how that goes."
Vernon Carey, the team's first-round pick in the 2004 draft, and Damion McIntosh are vying for the left tackle position.
Carey sat on the bench most of last season but did start two games at right tackle in place of John St. Clair, who is now at right guard. Houck thinks Carey can make the transition to the other side of the line.
"I think he can be a good left tackle," Houck said. "Vernon Carey has potential and I think he's working hard at improving himself. I'm very pleased with his development so far."
Houck believes that Wade Smith's days as a left tackle — the position at which he started the first 18 games of his career — are done. Smith is now the backup center.
"I think that will be his best spot," Houck said. "I think you have to look at physical limitations that he would have from a size standpoint to play tackle or guard. You can be a little bit smaller (at center) as long as you're quick and smart. You could play the center position a lot better."
Regardless of who is playing where, Houck is still in the beginning stages of forming his unit.
"We're trying to get them to understand what our philosophies are, what I expect from them from a technique standpoint, from an effort standpoint — which, by the way, has been excellent," Houck said. "They weren't happy with what they did last year and I think they're ready to work a little bit harder."
