The only member of the Dolphins' current roster to play under Don Shula, Jimmy Johnson and Dave Wannstedt probably won't get that same opportunity under first-year coach Nick Saban.
Tim Bowens' continuing problems in recovering from a back injury that sidelined him almost all of last season have left serious doubts about his return for a 12th NFL season. Saban admitted there is "some concern" about the status of Bowens and fellow defensive tackle Larry Chester, who recently needed arthroscopic surgery to clean loose debris from a right knee that was reconstructed last September.
"I think both those situations are a little bit up in the air right now," Saban said.
Chester, though, recently received a strong commitment for the 2005 season when the Dolphins decided not to release him before having to pay a weight-based incentive clause. Chester collected what is believed a six-figure bonus by tipping the scales at 338 pounds, which is just 13 more than his 2004 playing weight of 325.
Excess bulk has long been an issue with Bowens as well, but his attitude may be proving just as much of a detriment when he recently left team headquarters in a huff.
One source said Bowens became so angry at criticism from new defensive line coach Dan Quinn that he walked out of a meeting. Another source said Bowens left more out of frustration with his lack of progress in recuperating from a herniated disc than any beef with Quinn.
Dolphins officials didn't immediately respond when asked for comment about the situation.
Such behavior isn't expected to fly for long under Saban, who is unlikely to treat the 32-year-old Bowens with the same kid gloves that Wannstedt did the previous five seasons when he was among the AFC's better run-stuffing defensive tackles.
The Dolphins still may hold onto Bowens entering the preseason even if they are able to sign free agent defensive tackle Keith Traylor, who is being courted by the franchise. But Bowens will need to show he can remain healthy and earn the trust of the coaching staff. Otherwise, the Dolphins likely will balk at guaranteeing Bowens' $765,000 base salary for 2005 by having him on their opening-game roster.
