Miami Dolphins draft needs

2005-04-21 | Weblog
Buffalo Bills.com

Coach: Nick Saban (1st year) General manager: Rick Spielman
Last season: 4-12, Last place AFC East

1st round pick: 2 2nd round pick: None 3rd round pick: 70

Draft strategy: Saban has plenty of needs to address and is trying to figure out a way to get extra draft picks. The Dolphins do not have a second-round pick, sending that to Philadelphia for quarterback A.J. Feeley last year. Saban doesn't want to have to wait for 70th for his second pick.

The Dolphins and Tampa Bay, which has the fifth overall pick, have discussed a possible swap of first-rounders with Miami also receiving picks in the second and third round. That's contingent on quarterback Alex Smith of Utah being available with the second pick. If San Francisco selects Smith No. 1 overall, then the Dolphins may not get offers for the second pick.

If that's the case, Miami should select Auburn's Ronnie Brown, who is rated as the draft's most complete running back, to replace the retired Ricky Williams. There is speculation that Williams may want to return, but he still must serve a suspension for testing positive for marijuana.

Saban can still pass on a running back in the draft and pursue a trade for Edgerrin James, who was designated as franchise player by Indianapolis. James starred for the University of Miami and would welcome a trade to the Dolphins.

Saban is a protege of Bill Belichick, so look for the Dolphins to go after linebackers with size and pass-rushing ability, along with a playmaking safety.

Veteran cornerback Patrick Surtain, who carries a hefty salary cap figure, has been given permission to seek a trade and may be headed to Kansas City.

Saban already helped the defensive line by signing Kevin Carter and Vonnie Holliday.

Phins' No. 2 pick drawing interest from Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings have spoken with the Dolphins about a trade to acquire the No. 2 pick in Saturday's draft, a source said Tuesday.

The Vikings also have contacted the teams selecting first (San Francisco) and third (Cleveland). It's believed Minnesota has targeted Michigan wide receiver Braylon Edwards as a replacement for Randy Moss, who was traded to Oakland earlier this offseason.

The Vikings have the seventh and 18th selections in the first round and probably would have to package those picks and more for the Dolphins to consider moving the No. 2 selection. The Dolphins are looking to trade down in the draft to acquire more selections, as the team is without second- and sixth-round choices because of last season's trades for quarterback A.J. Feeley and wide receiver David Boston.

ESPN reported Tampa Bay, which selects at No. 5, contacted the Dolphins last week. The Buccaneers are reportedly interested in selecting a quarterback.

Whether the Dolphins are able to trade down will most likely depend on which player San Francisco chooses with the first overall selection. San Francisco coach Mike Nolan said Monday his team has narrowed its options to Edwards and quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers (California) and Alex Smith (Utah). The 49ers hope to have a contract agreement in place before the draft with the player they plan to pick, which could have a major impact on who is chosen.

"Jockeying for position with someone behind us, I think everyone is a little reluctant to do that with Miami and Cleveland because they don't know what were going to do," Nolan said. "I think everyone is afraid right now to do any maneuvering prior to the draft because if they get second or third position they're not guaranteed to get anything."

Draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. said Tuesday that Smith's rising stock may have increased the value of the Dolphins' pick. Kiper has Smith rated ahead of Rodgers on his draft board.

"Miami and Cleveland were thinking about [trading down] and Smith became the hot guy in the last three days," Kiper said. "Miami's got the hot pick. Tampa is looking at Smith."

Monday Night Football moving to ESPN

A television institution is moving. Monday Night Football will end a 36-year run on ABC when it switches to ESPN in 2006.

MNF, which made its debut in 1970, is the second-longest running prime-time network series. CBS's 60 Minutes began in 1968.

ESPN kickoffs will be at 8:40 p.m., 30 minutes earlier than ABC's MNF telecasts.

The Associated Press reported that ESPN will pay $1.1 billion per year over eight years to take over the Monday night package.

Meanwhile, NBC is taking over ESPN's Sunday night games.

NBC, which returns to the NFL for the first time in eight years, will get flexible scheduling over the final seven weeks, allowing it to air the most meaningful late-season matchups. NBC will also get the Thursday night season openers, and the Super Bowls in 2009 and 2012.

ABC, which was outbid by NBC, is the only major network without the NFL.

The NFL previously renewed Sunday afternoon deals with CBS and Fox for a total of $8 billion over six years. The NFL is still considering an eight-game late-season package of Thursday and Saturday night games.

DE Coleman stays on with Broncos

2005-04-20 | Weblog
NFL.com wire reports
DENVER (April 19, 2005) -- The Denver Broncos signed defensive end Marco Coleman to a contract, keeping the 14-year veteran with the team after a season in which he started every game.

Coleman had 46 tackles and 2½ sacks for the Broncos last season. He'll likely be a backup after an offseason in which the Broncos acquired Gerard Warren, Courtney Brown, Ebenezer Ekuban and re-signed Trevor Pryce.

The signing is yet another indication that the Broncos won't go after a defensive lineman in the weekend's draft. Their biggest needs are at receiver, offensive line and defensive back.
