Things that were previously unthinkable in the twenty-first century—one European nation forcibly overthrowing the government of another, a non-aggression pact between the world’s two most powerful authoritarian states, and the prospect of simultaneous crises on both sides of Eurasia—now look not only possible, but perhaps probable.
