I would like to share the contents of Editorial article of Nihon Keizai Shimbun newspaper posted on February 14.

The U.S. government has announced its Indo-Pacific strategy, which aims to deter China by collaborating with allies and friendly countries in terms of both security and economy.

Japan should further deepen cooperation with the U.S. and other countries concerned and take the lead in stabilizing the region.

Authoritarian countries are continuing to try to change the status quo.

China is pressuring Taiwan with its coercive maritime expansion, Russia is massing its forces around Ukraine, and North Korea is accelerating its nuclear and missile development.

The security environment in each region is only getting worse.

We must put a stop to this situation and restore a world that upholds universal values and respects international norms.

The strategy was announced at a time when the United States is struggling with the Ukraine crisis.

We welcome this stance, as it shows a determination to deal with global challenges in parallel.

The strategy stresses that the U.S. will continue to be actively involved in the Indo-Pacific region, saying that prosperity in the region is in the U.S. national interest and that the U.S. will create a desirable strategic environment for the U.S. and its allies.

In order to create a desirable strategic environment for the U.S. and its allies, the U.S. is strengthening its deterrent capability to stop aggression in all areas, and is also aiming to improve its capabilities in areas such as cyber and emerging technologies.

What the U.S. is emphasizing is cooperation with allies and other countries.

It is difficult for the U.S. alone to deal with all the factors of instability.

It makes sense for the U.S. to respond in a multilayered manner through alliances with Japan, South Korea, Australia, and other countries, as well as through the Quad, a framework consisting of Japan, the U.S., Australia, and India.
