Welcome to Japan Issues.
"The Fatal Flaw in the U.S.-Made Constitution of Japan."
I would like tentatively to share the insights and commentary by Mr. Yoshihisa Komori, Advisor for Japan Forum for Strategic Studies and Distinguished Professor at Reitaku University.
The historical facts pointed out by Mr. Komori this time are extremely important because they are the basic premise for considering Japan Issues, especially Japan's security policy.
"Constitution Day has come again this year.
This is the day to commemorate the enactment of the Constitution of Japan on May 3, 1947.
Around this day, the debate over the Constitution is heightened.
However, there is little mention of how the Constitution was created by the U.S. occupation forces and how unnatural and flawed it is.
I have firsthand experience of meeting Mr. Charles Kadis, who was in charge of drafting the Constitution of Japan, and hearing the details of its preparation.
He told me in detail that the draft was poorly and crudely written under very unusual circumstances, and that it was intended to suppress the fundamental rights of Japan as an independent nation in the postwar era.
There are probably very few Japanese who have had the opportunity to hear directly from the American side of the Constitution's drafting process."
