すべきであったことについて話す

フォーマルな英語では、仮定法過去完了形は had + 主語 + 過去分詞の形で表すことがよくあります。これは何かすべきであったことについて話す時によく使います。

Had they been more careful with their supplies, they could have reached the Pole.

Saying what someone should have done

In formal English, third conditional sentence conditions are often constructed as had + subject + past participle. This structure is often used when discussing what should have been done.

Had they been more careful with their supplies, they could have reached the Pole.

What is it important to do if you are exploring a jungle?

A: Mr. Morgan. What happened to Gregson and the others? Did they ever find the source of the river?

B: Unfortunately not. They believed they had taken a wrong turn and decided to change direction.

A: And then they gave up?

B: Yes. They lost heart and turned back. Had they just continued on their original route, they would have reached their goal in a matter of days.
