Numb with shock, Faye stared at the doctor.
（ショックのあまり、フェイは感覚が麻痺したままま医師を見つめた。）

It wasn't possible that she had heard it right.
（聞き間違いかもしれない。）

It couldn't be true!
（こんなの現実じゃない！）

Not once in those terrifying weeks of her hospitalisation had this possibility occurred to her.
（あの地獄のような入院生活の中にいながら、まさかこんなことがあるかもしれないなんて、思ってもみなかった。）

But the doctor sitting behind his desk was no product of her imagination and neither were the words he had spoken.
（しかし、机をはさんで座っている医師は彼女の空想が産み出した架空の人物などではなく、たった今宣告された言葉も現実のものだった。）

His eyes were very kind and full of compassion, and Faye couldn't bear to look at him.
（彼の眼差しは優しく親密で、思いやりに溢れており、フェイはとても見ていられなかった。）

No one had ever looked at her quite like that.
（今まで誰かからそんな目で見られたことなどなかったから。）
