Sunmi (former member of Wonder Girls) - the source of musical appeal
ソンミ(元Wonder Girls)音楽の魅力の源泉

Who is Sunmi, the senior member of TWICE? Her performance of a certain instrument is more advanced than you would imagine, attracting attention... The more you get to know her, the more amazing she becomes.

Sunmi was born on May 2, 1992. She became a trainee at JYP through a public audition.

In 2007, Sunmi made her idol debut as a member of JYP's girl group, Wonder Girls.

Despite experiencing members leaving the group due to poor health, Wonder Girls suddenly attracted attention with their big hit "Tell Me."

They followed up with hits "So Hot" and "Nobody," with "Nobody" becoming a big hit that was even known in the US.

Having quickly made Wonder Girls a top girl group, JYP gained momentum and planned to enter the US market.
However, Wonder Girls' US entry ultimately failed.

It was a typical mistake in expeditions: "It's easy to go, but scary to come back."

The plan to enter the US with offices and restaurants was a futile one, and the Wonder Girls ended up staying in the US for too long, which was unfortunate for them.

Regrouping, Wonder Girls made a belated entry into Japan, but by that time Girls' Generation and KARA were already booming.

A K-Pop concert was held in Japan, bringing together K-Pop artists.

A red carpet was prepared for the concert. While KARA came on stage to overwhelming cheers, Wonder Girls only received sparse cheers and applause.

JYP would later make use of this bitter experience with the success of TWICE.

TWICE leaders Jihyo and Sunmi seem to have had a good time together as trainees.

Though they both debuted as idols, their beginnings and activities were completely different, but over the years they have become big idols.

This photo of the two of them can be said to be a precious one that connects the two of them at the time to the present.

Although she started her brilliant idol career as a member of Wonder Girls, Sunmi's life was shadowed by a difficult one.

Sunmi, who admired BoA and dreamed of becoming an idol singer, does not seem to have come from a wealthy family.

As the eldest daughter with two younger brothers, Sunmi began living with her father from elementary school.

However, it seems that her father was ill.

She began to be hospitalized when Sunmi was in middle school.

This was before Sunmi auditioned for JYP.

However, her father may have had high hopes for her. It is thought that he gladly sent his daughter off to Seoul.

Perhaps knowing that she was near death, her father would often send her letters saying that he wanted her to come back.

Sunmi seems to have sent a soothing reply to her father.

"There's talk of your debut, so please be patient and wait for a little longer..." she said.

Eventually, as she was finishing up her trainee life before her debut, she became busy and was unable to write a reply.

Just then, the news of her father's death reached Sunmi, and I imagine she burst into tears.

Today, K-Pop has become a world-class popular music genre, and unlike when Sunmi debuted with Wonder Girls, we now live in an era where many popular girls coexist and are active.

Naturally, those aspiring to become idols are thriving, not only within Korea but also from all over Asia.

However, it seems that many of these children come from privileged backgrounds.

How many girls are in the same situation as Sunmi?

However, Sunmi's difficult financial situation may have actually brought her good fortune.

Having lost her father and faced the reality of having to raise her two younger brothers, Sunmi was forced at the last minute to give up on going to America as a member of Wonder Girls.

The official reason was that she wanted to focus on her studies, but various circumstances were likely weighing on her.

As a result, Sunmi left Wonder Girls midway through their activities, only to return as a later member a few years later.

The instrument Sunmi played on the hit song "Why So Lonely," which was fitting for the final song of Wonder Girls' activities, was the bass.

I would always look at Sunmi while watching the stage for this song.
