【まぼろしの１９８０年公演】
ビートルズとドラッグの関係は彼らが現役時代から、何かと世間を騒がせてきた。ビートルズ解散後も特にポールは日本公演が２度までも幻となっており、われら日本のファンにとってドラッグといえばポールの名を思い出すことが多い。ここでは'８０の１月に予定されていたウイングス来日公演について書いてみた。その直前の日本の盛り上がりにちょっと触れてみたい。'７５年秋に予定されていた待望のポール・マッカートニー＆ウィングスの来日コンサートが直前になって流れた。理由は「ポールにケシ栽培と麻薬所持の前歴ある」ということで、法務省入国管理局が来日に対してNO！を突きつけた。あの名盤「Wings Over America」のツアーの一環として、オーストラリア公演の次に日本へやって来る予定であった。ビートルズ武道館公演以来９年ぶりのポールのコンサートは、お堅い法務省の役人のつまらん判断により潰されてしまった。

フェスティバルホールでのチケット料金が異常に高いが、なんと東京だけで７回コンサートがあり、
名古屋、大阪でもステージがあり、合計１１回という大盤振る舞いだ。 今ではドーム公演で一回に数万人の観客動員があるが、当時はせいぜい一回で一万人が精一杯、しかし、やろうと思えば１１回もポールを見ることも可能だ。またドームに比べて比較的近い場所でポールを見られる素晴らしい環境だったに違いない。ポールより日本のファンにメッセージが届いた。「念願の日本公演実現できることになって嬉しい。親子ともども日本でのコンサートを楽しみにしています。日本公演では特別のプログラムを用意して、必ず日本のファンの期待に応えたい」。今まで以上にビートルズ・ナンバーを取り入れ、日本の曲を１曲演奏することが確認された。「麻薬の前歴のある外国人は原則として入国させない方針でのぞんでいるが、何が何でも入国拒否というのではなく、前歴が軽いものであって、罪を犯してから８，９年たっていれば入国を認める」となんともあやふやな見解を法務省は発表した。 '７５にポールの入国拒否事件から５年。この間本人はもとより、様々な関係者による入国許可のための努力があった。招聘元のウドー音楽事務所の根気強い交渉というか、各方面への根回しは相当のものだったという。またポールの要請によりヨーコ・オノが日本での人脈を活用して、なんと政財界を動かして働きかけを行ったという。しかし、一番忘れてならないのはファンの努力である。法務省への嘆願書提出、入国許可を求める数万人規模の署名活動、キャンドル行進などの涙ぐましい地道な、そして世論をも動かす素晴らしい活動があったのだ。こうした日本のファンの活動をポールは知っていたのだろうか？もし、知っていたのだとしたら、何故？こうしてポール、ファン、関係者にとって最悪の運命の日を迎える事となった、、、。

John and Paul started to compose "Misery" backstage at King's Hall, crafting it specifically for imminent tourmate Helen Shapiro. This concert contained a one-off Beatles performance of the Rooftop Singers' current hit "Walk Right In".

"AFTER half a century and a worldwide search, the ECHO has found a Merseyside couple mentioned during a landmark Beatles broadcast.
The hunt for Elaine McGerrity began when Stuart Leaver, who recorded all of the Beatles early radio broadcasts, asked the newspaper to look for a woman who had a record dedicated to her on Saturday Club, the BBC music show on the Light Programme hosted by Brian Matthew.
Mr Leaver, now 70, said: "After they had played Some Other Guy, Brian Matthew said that he had a request from a man called Mike on behalf of a Miss Elaine McGerrity, from Mendip Road, Birkenhead.
"I recorded all of those programmes and I always wondered who Elaine McGerrity was, and what her relationship was with Mike. I wondered if they ended up getting married, or if they ever went to see The Beatles." The show was recorded on
‡(sat)January 26, 1963, two weeks after the release of Please Please Me. They performed Some Other Guy, Love Me Do, Please Please Me, Keep Your Hands Off My Baby and Beautiful Dreamer.
A few days after the story ran, Mike Hayes - the Mike who made the dedication - contacted the ECHO to say that he and Elaine - now Elaine Hayes, 68 - did indeed marry.
The 68-year-old said: "We were aware that there had been a recording, but we had no idea how to get a copy of it.
"It was a real surprise to see our story in the paper.
"Those days were a very exciting point in our lives and Elaine and I were both delighted to hear that a copy of the recording still existed."
The ECHO put the couple in touch with Mr Leaver, who has given them a copy of the programme.
Mr Hayes added: "It has been very exciting for us. We're going to get the family round and all have a listen at Christmas.
"We're so pleased to have a copy of it, and so grateful to Stuart Leaver for keeping hold of a little piece of history.""

エル･リオ･クラブ (El Rio Club)／エル･リオ･ダンスホール (El Rio Dance Hall) での公演に続くビートルズのこの日2つ目の出演は、スタッフォードシャー (Staffordshire) の町ストーク･オン･トレント (Stoke-on-Trent) のグリーブ通り (Glebe Street) にあるキングズ･ホール (King's Hall) での公演だった。このショーの中でビートルズはこれ1回きり『Walk Right In』をカバーして演奏している。この曲はアメリカのルーフトップ･シンガーズ (Rooftop Singers) のニューヒットで、アメリカのチャートではNo.1に輝いていた。キングズ･ホールの楽屋ではジョン･レノンとポール･マッカートニーが『Misery』を書き始めている。この曲は後にビートルズのデビューアルバム『Please Please Me』に収録されるのだが、当初ははヘレン･シャピロ (Helen Shapiro) にプレゼントするつもりの歌であった。彼女とは1週間後に始まるビートルズ初のUKツアーで同行することになる。またこの日の10:00pm～12:00pmに、1月22日に収録したBBCのラジオショー『Saturday Club』がオンエアされている。

ピーター･フィリップス(パーシー･フィリップスの孫) ⇒ 彼 (パーシー) がブライアン･エプスタインとビートルズのために、他のレコードも作っていたのは間違いない。僕らはその1つを1977年にスタジオの箱の中から見つけている。彼はそれ以外にも録音したり消したりしていたようだ。エプスタインは祖父の店の常連で、祖父のことをよく知っていた。ブライアンはまたビートルズの初期のラジオ出演を録音してレコードにすることを祖父に依頼していた。1977年に見つけたのはそれの1枚だった。それは7インチ45回転のアセテート盤で、1963年のBBCの「サタデークラブ」に出演した時のもので『Some Other Guy』『Beautiful Dreamer』『Keep Your Hands Off My Baby』が入っている。

06.♪Keep Your Hands Off My Baby♪『SATURDAY CLUB』63.1.22.収録 1.26.放送「ロコモーション」で有名なアイドル女性シンガー、リトル・エヴァのカバーで、意外なことにジョンが歌っている。「何でこんな曲を？」と思ってしまいそうだが、実は作者はLennon-McCartneyが多大な影響を受けたソング・ライター・コンビ、ジェリー・ゴフィン＝キャロル・キングの作品である。 そんな理由から取り上げたのだろう。しかし、ジョンのボーカルとポール、ジョージのコーラスの絡みがブラック系のガール・コーラス・グループっぽい雰囲気を出しているので、意外とブラック寄りの仕上がり。出来は悪くないし、違和感もない。また、海賊盤では雑音がひどくて聴いてられないほどだったが、ここでは一応その不満は解消されている。

According to Andy Babiuk, in Beatles Gear, it was around this time that the talents of local Liverpool signwriter, Tex O'Hara, were enlisted to design a Beatles drum logo. Seen in the top image on this page are various ideas that were considered before deciding on the final design seen to the right. These ideas were based on the 1962 drawing by Paul as seen below.

These photos might date from two separate sessions but here's what we've got. Andy Babiuk, in Beatles Gear, dates these photos as January 1963. He also states that it was in January 1963 when Ringo changed his drum logo. George is playing a borrowed Gretsch Jet Fire Bird instead of his Duo Jet.
This guitar is seen in photos taken at E.M.I. House
on 21 January 1963.
Mark Lewisohn, in The Complete Beatles Chronicle, states that John and Paul began writing "Misery"
on ●26 January 1963.
In his book The True Story Of The Beatles (June 1964), Billy Sheperd captions...
photo #1 (right) "...busy putting yet another tune on to tape".
photo #2 "...taping "Misery" at the Cavern".
photo #3 "George...listens to a playback of one of John and Paul's tunes..."
The Beatles played The Cavern
on 30 and 31 January 1963. In one publication, Mike McCartney date these photos as 1962 but that cannot be accurate.

Ｎote･･･『The Beatles Anthology ３』に、1969年1月26日のテイクが収録されている。これはフィル・スペクターによるオーケストラがオーバーダブされる前のシンプルな演奏である。が、ライナーに書かれている「アルバム『レット・イット・ビー』と同じもの」という記述と、マーク・ルウィソーンの「ザ・ビートルズ レコーディング・セッションズ完全版」の記述に矛盾が生じている。確かに「レット・イット・ビー」収録のポールのヴォーカルトラックはこの1月26日のテイクと同じである。しかし、このアンソロジーに収録されたバージョンは未発表アルバム「ゲット・バック」に収められた物と全く同じであり、「ビートルズ・レコーディング・セッション」の「『ゲット・バック』には1月31日のバージョンが収められた」という記述とも違うし、「フィル・スペクターは1月31日のテイクにオーケストラを重ねた」とも書いてある。もしアンソロジーのライナーが正しければ、リリースされたものは1月26日のテイク以外は一切使用していない、という事になるので、どっちが正しいのかをぜひ知りたい所である

┃ ☆ビートルズ予告編 ┃わたしの記録していたノートには
┗━━━━━━━━━━━┛ビートルズの名はひとつも見当たりません。初めて、ビートルズの名や曲が聞けたのは、翌64年になってからのことです。ビートルズのレコードの日本での発売元、東芝音楽工業の洋楽レコードのベスト１０番組「東芝ヒットパレード」で初めてビートルズの曲がかかったのは、●64年1月26日の新譜紹介のときでした。そのとき、"プリーズ・プリーズ・ミー" がかけられ、翌週2月2日には13位に初ランクしています。しかし、それよりも早く「9500万人のポピュラーリクエスト」では、64年1月10日に『今年の新譜紹介』として"プリーズ・プリーズ・ミー" がかけられています。でも、初めてランク入りしたのは１ヵ月後の２月１４日でした。しかし、何と言っても、私にとって、最も衝撃的だったのは、「9500万人のポピュラーリクエスト」で紹介されていたアメリカのCash Box誌で、「抱きしめたい」(I Want To Hold Your Hand)が１月25日付で初めて第１位になったときのことです。毎週順位を記録していれば最後に発表される１位は見当がつくものですが、この時は、「えっ！一体何が１位？」とまったく見当がつきませんでした。その前の週が43位だった曲が突然１位になったのです。その曲というのがI Want To Hold Your Handでした。そのとき、番組ではそのレコードの準備もなく確か、ＤＪの小島正雄さんが、「次週、必ず、レコードを手に入れてかけます。」というふうに言ったような記憶があります。だから多分分2月7日あたりの放送で初めて「抱きしめたい」を聞いたのではないかと思いますヨ(=^◇^=)
