60年代中期からインド志向を強め、ヒンドゥー教に由来する超越瞑想の指導者マハリシ・マヘーシュ・ヨーギーに傾倒したビートルズ。1968年2月に、ヨーギーの僧院があるインド北部リシケシュを訪問。その滞在時の記録に焦点を当てた最新ドキュメンタリー映画「The Beatles And India: A Feature-length Documentary Film」(2021年秋公開予定) が輸入盤ブルーレイ＆DVDで登場。2008年に出版された「アクロス・ザ・ユニヴァース：ザ・ビートルズ・イン・インディア」の著者でもあるアジョイ・ボーズが共同監督を務めた本作品は、インド各地でのロケ―ション映像に、貴重なアーカイヴ映像や音源、写真、目撃者の証言、専門家のコメントなどを交えて、ビートルズとインドとのミステリアス (？) な ”蜜月” 関係を追っている。『ホワイト・アルバム』の収録曲をはじめ、ジョージ・ハリスン作の「The Inner Light」、ジョン・レノンのソロ初期の未発表曲「India, India」など、精神世界だけでなく、作品や曲作り、クリエイティヴィティにも大きな影響を与えたと言われているこのインド滞在が実際どのようなものだったのか、ビートルズにとってのインド、またはインドがどのようにビートルズの進化に関わったのか、その内実が、この初の本格的な取材調査によって明かされることになるだろう。ブルーレイは、リージョンフリー ⇒ リージョン２（日本製プレーヤーでの視聴不可）となることが判明しました。またDVDは、PAL方式となります。

The difference in The Beatles' profile between then and now was huge, illustrated not least by their fee having gone from ￡250 to ￡1,000. The show was made by Associated TeleVision (ATV), and invariably attracted huge viewing figures. Much of the day was spent in rehearsals at the Palladium, with The Beatles topping the bill during the live show, which was broadcast from 8.25pm to 9.25.

I'm taking a wild guess on this photo. It's assumed this is a rehearsal for a television appearance. Because they are some distance from the microphone, I would assume that they are miming. Ringo's blank drum head, would place it in January 1963. One source dates this as the
17 October 1962 edition of People And Places but Ringo's drum head proves otherwise.
It has to date after ●12 January 1963 (the last imaged date for the 'Ringo Starr' drum logo) and before
17 February (the first imaged date for The Beatles 'bug' drum logo. Within this time, The Beatles appeared on the following television shows. (all performances were mimed)

┗━━━━━━━━━━━━┛No.1 この曲はインド・ムンバイにあるEMIレコーディングスタジオでバックトラックが録音されている。ジョージは元々映画「WONDERWALL」のサウンドトラック制作の為にインドに滞在していた。サウンドトラック版の録音が予想より早く終わってしまったために、「もしかしたらビートルズで使うかも知れない」と思ったジョージは、雇った現地のミュージシャンを使ってインストゥルメンタルを数曲録音した。これが1968年1月12日の出来事である。その内の一つがこの「ジ・インナー・ライト」へと発展するのである。このインストは5テイク録音されていたようである。

先日、こんなニュースを見つけました。
ジョンが１９６９年に返還したMBE.勲章発見
ジョンが１９６９年に返還したMBE勲章が発見されたと、Times OnlineとUKサンが報じている。ジョンは当時「イギリスのナイジェリア／ビアフラでの内戦への関与、ベトナム戦争におけるアメリカへの支援、「コールド・ターキー」がチャートを下降していることに反対し」と言ってMBE.勲章を返還した。そのMBE勲章は返還されたときに、ジョンが添えた手紙とともに、セント・ジェームス宮殿の Central Chancery of the Orders of Knighthood（勲爵士団の中央公文書保管所）に置かれた。 勲章は返還されたが、ジョンの気持ちとは裏腹にMBEという称号はそのまま残されている。バッキンガム宮殿は声明を出し、その一部で「それはレノン氏が返還した日から保管されておりますが、博物館で展示されるかどうか決めるには、まず所有者を定める必要があるでしょう。それはジョン・レノンの遺産を管理するヨーコ・オノ次第と言えましょう」念のため解説しておきますと、ビートルズの４人は
１９６５年１０月２６日に大英帝国彰勲章 （Members of the Order of British Empire: MBE)を英国王室から送られています。
受勲の理由は国家に対する、外貨獲得などによる多大な経済的貢献です。ビートルズの受勲が発表されたところ、戦争の武勲で勲章をもらった元軍人達の中で勲章を返上するという騒動が起こったりしましたが、その時にジョンは、「僕らの叙勲に不満がある人は、戦争で人を殺して勲章をもらったんだろう。でも僕達は人を楽しませてもらうんだから、僕達のほうがもらう資格はあると思うよ」と、なかなかユーモアのある発言をしています。さて、そのMBE勲章をジョンが王室に返還したのが
１９６９年１１月２６日で、その勲章が先日 宮殿で見つかった、というニュースなのです。返還された勲章が捨てられずに発見されたことついては特に感想はないんですが、今回のニュースであらためて思ったのは、なぜジョン・レノンはMBE勲章を返還したのか？ということです。＞「コールド・ターキー」がチャートを下降していることはジョークとして、一般にはイギリス政府の政策に抗議してと言われていまして、その具体的な政策が「イギリスのナイジェリア／ビアフラでの内戦への関与」と「ベトナム戦争におけるアメリカへの支援」です。しかし私は、これはジョンの気持ちの核心ではないのではないかと考えています。２年後の１９７１年に「Happy Xmas (War Is Over)」をリリースしていますから、１９６９年当時のジョンが強固な反戦思想を持っていても不思議ではないんですが、これが勲章返還の真の理由ではないと思うんですよね。まず、戦争についての政策を決定・実行しているのは英国王室ではなく英国政府ですから、政府への抗議として王室へ勲章を返還するのは少し筋違いだと感じます。それに「ベトナム戦争におけるアメリカへの支援」に反対してといいながら、ジョンは１９７１年にアメリカに移住してるんです。１９７１年のアメリカは、まだベトナム戦争を継続中です。これらのことから考えて、ジョンの勲章返還の本当の理由は「戦争政策批判」ではないと思います。それではジョンの勲章返還の真の理由は何だったのでしょうか？謎を解く鍵は、１９６９年１１月という時期にあると思います。この頃のジョンですが、まず１９６９年７月に「平和を我等に（Give Peace A Chance）」、１０月に「コールド・ターキー（Cold Turkey）」の各々をビートルズではなく、Plastic Ono Band（プラスティック・オノ・バンド）というジョンとヨーコを中心とした新しいバンド名義でリリースしています。そして勲章を返還したとされている
１１月２６日ですが、この日のジョンは何をしていたかといいますと、プラスティック・オノ・バンド名義でEMI第２スタジオを使い、「What’s The New Mary Jane」と「You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)」の編集やオーバー・ダビングをしています。この日にスタジオに集まったのはプラスティック・オノ・バンドの名の示す通りジョンとヨーコだけであり、ポール、ジョージ、リンゴは参加していません。
そして翌年の
１９７０年１月３日と４日に、前回の記事で書いたようにビートルズとしての最後のセッションが行われたのですが、これにはジョンのみ参加していません。さらに、このセッションの中でジョージがこんな“公式表明”をした記録が、テープに残っているそうです。「すでにお聞き及びのことと思いますが、デイブ・ディーはグループを脱退しました。しかしミッキーとティッチ、それに私は、大切でありながらこれまで二の次とみなされていた仕事を、今後も続ける所存であります」デイブ・ディーとは、６０年代のイギリスのポップ・グループ「デイブ・ディー、ドジー、ビーキー、ミック＆ティッチ（日本での名前はデイブ・ディー・グループ）」のリーダーで、１９６９年にグループを抜けてソロになった歌手の名前です。ジョージはデイブ・ディーとジョンをひっかけて、ジョンがビートルズをすでに脱退していること、自分達は残されたテープの編集作業をしていることを、皮肉交じりに表明しているのです。この流れを踏まえてジョンの勲章返還を、私はこう考えます。ビートルズとしての名誉であるMBE勲章を返還することで、ジョンはビートルズとしての名声を返上したかったのではないでしょうか。ジョンのMBE勲章返還は、ビートルズとの決別の表明だったのではないでしょうか。受勲の時は“たかが勲章”という態度を取っていたジョンでしたが、MBE勲章にそれだけの意味を込めていたのかと思うと、やぱりジョンは英国人であり、“されど勲章”の気持ちも強かったのではないかと思います
