“I’m So Young”, a cover of The Student’s 1961 single, was the last track recorded for the band's 'Today!' album. The group had initially recorded an earlier version on
‡September 9, 1964 but Brian decided not to use that version and went back to the studio in January 1965 to re-try the song again, this time with the actual Beach Boys playing on the song. The basic track was recorded on January 18 with Brian playing the organ, Al on bass, Dennis on drums, Carl on 12-string guitar and with then road manager Ron Swallow on tambourine. After various rehearsal takes, the backing track took one take and up to this point the song begins on the first verse instead of the vocal intro heard on the album. Overdubs then followed (identified as ‘Insert’) with Carl adding rhythm guitar and Brian adding 6-string bass guitar riffs. The song’s intro was immediately recorded after finishing the instrumental track and took various attempts. During the next session on January 19, the boys recorded the rest of the vocal overdubs. The first vocal overdub was recorded on the last available track of the 3-track tape. After this a fold-down of the tracks followed (transfer to a 'stage two') with the second vocal overdubs recorded on the same track as the first vocal overdubs. These overdubs were now referred as Takes 1a ? 5a by engineer Chuck Britz. Take 5a was the master performance and the intro was spliced in before the first verse starts.
