ザ･ビートルズの『Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band』は、史上最高にアイコニックなアルバム・ジャケットの座をいまだ維持し続けている。ポール・マッカートニーの着想から、イギリスのポップ・アーティスト、ピーター・ブレイクと妻のジャン・ハワースによる最終デザインに至るまで、これは単なるアルバム・ジャケットの枠を超えている。当時を象徴する見事なモダン・アート作品なのだ。このアートワークは、当時としては画期的なデザインだった。また、制作費用が3,000ポンド（現在では5万ポンド以上に相当する）と破格で、当時のポップ・アルバムのジャケットでは最高額である。コンセプトは、ザ・ビートルズが「サージェント・ペパーズ・ロンリー・ハーツ・クラブ・バンド」に扮して登場し、今ちょうどコンサートを終えたところで影響力の大きな人々の集団に囲まれている、というものだ。合計58人が、最終版のアートワークに登場している。ジャケットに登場した人々は、ジョン、ポール、ジョージ、ピーター・ブレイク、ジャン・ハワース、そしてロンドンの美術品商、ロバート・フレイザーが共同で作ったリストから選ばれた。イエス・キリストとアドルフ・ヒトラーは、掲載には不適切とされ、マハトマ・ガンジーやレオ・ゴーシーといった人々は、別の理由で削除された。また、エルヴィス・プレスリーの顔がないのも気になるが、これはポール・マッカートニーが後年語っているが、「あまりに重要で、雲の上の存在すぎて、口にするだけでも畏れ多い存在」だったからだという。最終ヴァージョンに残った人々は、文化人や重要人物、さらにはザ・ビートルズのメンバーが関心を持つ人々が並ぶ魅惑的な顔ぶれだ。「Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band」の歌詞のように、「皆さんも長年、このバンドのことは知っているだろう。それでは、『Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band』のジャケットに掲載されている残りの人々を皆さんに紹介しよう……」

★1964(昭和39)年01月、ニューヨークのタレント事務所ジェネラル・アーチスツ・コーポレーション（GAC）の副社長のノーマン・ワイスは所属タレントのトリニ・ロペスとともにパリにいた。ビートルズのステージに出演していた関係でブライアン・エプスタインとノーマンはパリで初対面となる。
★やがて、アメリカ初公演の熱狂振りを見たノーマンはビートルズのアメリカ・ツアーは大きなビジネス・チャンスとばかりに、全米ツアーの契約をNEMSエンタープライズと結んだ。

‡1969(昭和44)年01月14日(tue) 非常にご機嫌なポールとリンゴが挨拶を交わすシーンから収録されている。ビートルズは夜型の生活をおくっていたが、この時ばかりは映画の撮影スタッフの事も考慮して朝方になっていたと伝えられる（それがトウィッケンナムでのレコーディングが不評だった理由でもある）。それが証拠にポールとリンゴは「おはヨーグルト！」という元気いっぱいに言葉を交わしている。レコーディングの合間に何らかの番組のためにジョンとヨーコがスタジオでインタビューを受けている。

A Wolverham Welfare Association Dance, attended by 700 people.
"I'm barely 15 years, never been to a gig (a dance in those days!) and I've been invited by my friend Angela to a "do" to raise funds for the Carnival Queen in the Civic Hall at Ellesmere Port. "It's brilliant new group from Liverpool," she tells me. 'The Beatles, with an A." Along I go in my best - a straight skirt, daringly short, and a very prim white blouse with a high neck. The atmosphere is amazing and the performance electric.
The show finishes and we're waiting for Angela's mum to clear up and take us home when we're called over. "You can go backstage if you want to . . ." Wow! By now we're all in a frenzy and a little nervous but that disappears as soon as we walk into the dressing room. Four exuberant, noisy boys larking about and writing on the mirrors. It didn't matter who was who, they were all friendly, chatty and wild.
The only number I remember is Please Please Me but that started me on the collection - all my pocket money that year was spent on new releases. Most of my time that should have been spent revising for GCEs was spent listening to the records. Maybe that's why I can remember most of the words to the early hits but very little about the Battle of Hastings!

"MY brother was the keyboard player in the Whitby Ward Trio. His band played support for the Beatles at the civic hall gig. I was backstage but was only five at the time, so it was all very boring to me! My brother's name was Roger Parrott. He emigrated to Australia in 1970 but remained in the music business in one form or another virtually all his career.

MY friend Barbara Dickson and I had some great times following the Beatles before they became really big, in fact we were responsible for them playing Ellesmere Port Civic Hall. We knew the lads really well from the Cavern Club, so we contacted the manager of the Civic Hall and encouraged him to book them. We'd always have a chat with Paul, John and the band and have a bit of a laugh after the gigs but before they went onstage at the civic hall Paul came and invited us back stage with them. It was a really good gig. They even offered to play at my 21st birthday party but I said no because I was only having it at my brother's house in Blacon! I've still got signed records now. They were nice lads and they deserved their success. They were truly great days.

この日ビートルズを見ようと、収容限度いっぱいの700人がエレスメア･ポート (Ellesmere Port) のシビック･ホール (Civc Hall) に集結した。ビートルズがエレスメア･ポートで公演するのはこの時が最初で最後となった。マージーサイドの大きな工業の町で、リヴァプールから19マイルしか離れていないにもかかわらず、彼らがこの町に戻ってくることはなかったのであった。

60年代中期からインド志向を強め、ヒンドゥー教に由来する超越瞑想の指導者マハリシ・マヘーシュ・ヨーギーに傾倒したビートルズ。1968年2月に、ヨーギーの僧院があるインド北部リシケシュを訪問。その滞在時の記録に焦点を当てた最新ドキュメンタリー映画「The Beatles And India: A Feature-length Documentary Film」(2021年秋公開予定) が輸入盤ブルーレイ＆DVDで登場。2008年に出版された「アクロス・ザ・ユニヴァース：ザ・ビートルズ・イン・インディア」の著者でもあるアジョイ・ボーズが共同監督を務めた本作品は、インド各地でのロケ―ション映像に、貴重なアーカイヴ映像や音源、写真、目撃者の証言、専門家のコメントなどを交えて、ビートルズとインドとのミステリアス (？) な ”蜜月” 関係を追っている。『ホワイト・アルバム』の収録曲をはじめ、ジョージ・ハリスン作の「The Inner Light」、ジョン・レノンのソロ初期の未発表曲「India, India」など、精神世界だけでなく、作品や曲作り、クリエイティヴィティにも大きな影響を与えたと言われているこのインド滞在が実際どのようなものだったのか、ビートルズにとってのインド、またはインドがどのようにビートルズの進化に関わったのか、その内実が、この初の本格的な取材調査によって明かされることになるだろう。ブルーレイは、リージョンフリー ⇒ リージョン２（日本製プレーヤーでの視聴不可）となることが判明しました。またDVDは、PAL方式となります。
