Q: "Mr. Lennon, your first book is a bestseller and I shouldn't see any doubt this one's going to be, too. Do you think that you'd be published were you not a Beatle?"
John: "I could probably get published but, you know, I wouldn't sell as many. I mean, they publish alot of rubbish anyway. But, uhh, I wouldn't sell."
Q: "Do you think you've got a built-in advantage in being a Beatle? I mean, are you glad about this, or would you rather have found a reputation as a writer in your own right?"
John: "No, I mean, I never thought of it. If I hadn't been a Beatle I just wouldn't have thought of having the stuff published 'cuz I would've been crawling around, broke, and just writing it and throwing it away. I might've been a Beat poet."
Q: "How did it come about that you weren't a Beat poet and that your first book was published?"
John: "Well, some American who shall remain nameless, who's called Michael Brown - I showed him the stuff and he took it to the publisher, and they published it. That was it."
Q: "Did you ever think of publishing it under a pseudonym, not as John Lennon?"
John: "I thought about it but what's the use, you know. Because he took it to the publisher first without telling them who he was just to see if they would've published it. That answers your first question as well."
Q: "It does indeed, yes. Living in the butterfly world of Pop as a Beatle, do you think that this undermines people's serious acceptance of you as a writer?"
John: "Uhh, it does. But I didn't really expect them to take me seriously, so, you know - there's nothing to say about that. They do take it more seriously than I thought, so that's good enough for me."
Q: "Indeed. I mean, the first book was reviewed in the posh 'Sundays,' and on the other side of the fence your music is recorded by people like Ella Fitzgerald - Now this is serious recognition in both areas. Which do you find more satisfying?"
John: "Well uhh... The book, really. It means more to other people that Ella Fitzgerald recorded one of our tunes than it does to us, because the tune is still something that Paul and I have written - so we still have the same faith in it. It just gives other people more faith in the tunes."
Q: "This book is very similar to the first in being bits and pieces of poems, and bits of prose. Do you think you'd ever want anything longer? A novel, for example."
John: "Well, I tried writing... The longest thing I've written is in this book. It's one about Sherlock Holmes, and it seemed like a novel to me but it turned out to be six pages. (smiles) But I don't think I could... I couldn't do it, you know. I get fed-up. and I wrote so many characters in it I forgot who they were."
Q: "This happens to other writers, too."
John: (smiles) "Hmmm. Other writers! Good."
Q: "The Pop business is a young man's world. It seems to have an ever increasingly young audience. Do you think that perhaps writing a book like this, and writing at all, perhaps might be an unconscious attempt to win recognition in the adult world?"
John: "No, because I started all this writing long before I was a Pop artist, or even a Beatle, or before I had a guitar. So it's nothing to do with that. The guitars came second."
Q: "and which comes first?"
John: "Well, now the guitars come first - 'cuz this is still a hobby, which it always has been."
Q: "You're going on doing it, are you?"
John: "I'll go on doing it."
Q: "Have you written anything else? Is anythng else coming off of this?"
John: "Well, uhh, I don't get much time. If I had more time I'd probably write more. The publisher rang-up and said, 'Have you written anything yet?' and I said, 'No, I've been writing songs,' because I can't do both at once. You know, I've got to concentrate on the book or the songs. So I haven't written anything since then."
Q: "We'll look for it nevertheless, John. Thank you very much indeed."
John: (comically exaggerated voice) "THANK YOU!"

During early summer of 1967, Paul McCartney had admitted to an inquiring Reporter that he had used LSD. This became a controversial issue, and a springboard for discussing the responsibilities of celebrities and journalists. The following segment was filmed on June 19, 1967 as a British TV-news interview, and was broadcast in Britain later that evening.
Q: "Paul, how often have you taken ＬＳＤ？"
Paul: (pause) "About four times."
Q: "and where did you get it from?"
Paul: "Well, you know, if I was to say where I got it from, you know, I mean... it's illegal and everything... it's silly to say that, you know. So I'd rather not say that."
Q: "Don't you believe that this is a matter which you should have kept private?"
Paul: "Mmm, but the thing is - I was asked a question by a newspaper, and the decision was whether to tell a lie or tell him the truth. I decided to tell him the truth... but I really didn't want to say anything, you know, because if I had my way I wouldn't have told anyone. I'm not trying to spread the word about this. But the man from the newspaper is the man from the mass medium. I'll keep it a personal thing if he does too you know... if he keeps it quiet. But he wanted to spread it so it's his responsibility, you know, for spreading it not mine."
Q: "But you're a public figure and you said it in the first place and you must have known it would make the newspaper."
Paul: "Yeah, but to say it is only to tell the truth. I'm telling the truth, you know. I don't know what everyone's so angry about."
Q: "Do you think that you have now encouraged your fans to take drugs?"
Paul: (clearly and calmly) "I don't think it'll make any difference. I don't think my fans are going to take drugs just because I did, you know. But the thing is - that's not the point anyway. I was asked whether I had or not. and from then on, the whole bit about how far it's gonna go and how many people it's going to encourage is up to the newspapers, and up to you on television. I mean, you're spreading this now, at this moment. This is going into all the homes in Britain. and I'd rather it didn't. But you're asking me the question - You want me to be honest - I'll be honest."
Q: "But as a public figure, surely you've got the responsibility to..."
Paul: "...No, it's you who've got the responsibility. You've got the responsibility not to spread this NOW. You know, I'm quite prepared to keep it as a very personal thing if you will too. If you'll shut up about it, I will."

◎ジム･マッカートニー ⇒ この日、ジェームズ･ポール･マッカートニー (James Paul McCartney) はリヴァプール･ウォルトン病院で生まれる。母のメアリーは、以前この病院の産科病棟で看護婦として働いていたことがあった。彼はおぞましい顔だった。私は耐えられなかった。恐ろしかった。彼は片方の目だけを開けて、ただずっと泣きわめいていた。彼らが抱き上げると、赤身の肉のかたまりのように見えた。家に帰って何十年ぶりに私は泣いた。しかし
1942(昭和17)年06月19日(金) 次の日、彼はいくぶん人間らしく見えた。結局最後には彼は愛らしい赤んぼうになっていた。
1947(昭和22)年、ポールはストックトン･ウッド･ロード小学校 (Stockton Wood Road Primary School) に通い始め、その後ジョセフ･ウィリアムズ上級小学校 (Joseph Williams Junior School) に進む。1953年に11プラス試験 (11-plus exam)* をパスして、リヴァプール･インスティテュート中等学校 (Liverpool Institute) に在籍資格を得る。
*英国の初等教育を終える11~12歳の児童が受検する「中学校入学のためのセンター試験」のようなもので、この成績結果によって入学できる学校のグレードが決まる。
1954(昭和29)年、インスティテュートへの通学バスの中でポールはジョージ･ハリスンと知り合う。ジョージは近くに住んでいた。
1954(昭和29)年(翌年)、マッカートニー一家はフォースリン通り (Forthlin Road) 20番地に引っ越す。今現在ここはナショナル･トラスト (National Trust) の所有となっている。
1956(昭和31)年10月31日(水)、メアリー･マッカートニーは乳房切除に塞栓症を起して他界する。彼女は乳癌を患っていた。ピアニストでありトランペット奏者でもあった父親のジムは、ポールと弟のマイクに音楽を奨めた。彼はポールにトランペットを買ってやったが、それはスキッフルが国家的なブームとなった時、15ポンドのゼニス (Framus Zenith) のアコースティック・ギターに交換されてしまう。
②1941(昭和16)年04月15日(火) ジム･マッカートニー、メアリー･モーヒンと結婚 ⇒ 長男のポールが生まれる14ヶ月前、ジェイムズ･マッカートニー (James McCartney) はメアリー･モーヒン (Mary Mohin) とリヴァプールで結婚した。この2人は

1941(昭和16)年08月にリヴァプール･タウン･ホール (Liverpool Town Hall) で結婚許可証を取得する。結婚式は、リヴァプールのウェスト･ダービー (West Derby) 地区のギルモス (Gillmoss) にある聖スウィザン･ローマカトリック教会 (St Swithin's Roman Catholic Church) で行われた。彼らは最初、アンフィールド (Anfield) のサンベリー通り (Sunbury Road) 10番地に住んだが、その後は引っ越しが続くことになる。メアリーは息子たちが生まれてからは、できるだけ良い人生のスタートを与えようと、より良い環境を求めてリヴァプール中をを頻繁に移動することを選んだのである。

ジム･マッカートニーは、自分の音楽に対する興味が息子にも受け継がれることを願って、ポールの14歳の誕生日にトランペットを買い与えた。
ポール･マッカートニー『ANTHOLOGY』親父が僕の14歳の誕生日にラッシュワース＆ドレイパーズ (Rushworth & Draper's) という楽器店でトランペットを買ってくれて、とても気に入っていた。当時ヒーロー物語があったんだ。ハリー･ジェームス (Harry James) や、それから「金色のトランペットを持つ男｣、1950年代にはエディ･カルバート (Eddie Calvert) をそう呼んだ。"チェリーピンク＆アップル･ブラッサム･ホワイト"を演奏したイギリスの大スターだ。その手の人気レコードが当時たくさんあった。だからみんなトランペッターになりたかったんだ。しばらくは一生懸命練習して"聖者の行進"を覚えた。それは今でもC調でなら吹けるよ。ぼくはC調と他2つのスケールを習得した。そしてこれを口に当てていると歌えないことに気がついた。そこで親父に「すごくいいギターがあるんだけど、それとトランペットを交換してもいい？」と聞いてみた。彼は承諾しなかった。でも僕はそのアコースティックギターと交換してしまったんだ。ゼニス (Framus Zenith) のやつだ。それは今でも持ってるよ。

1961(昭和36)年06月18日(日) 2度の契約更新の後、2度目のハンブルグ巡業が4月1日より7月1日まで行われ、92日間、のべ503時間トップ・テン・クラブのステージに立つ。前回の最初のハンブルグ巡業と並んで、ビートルズのスタミナと実力を飛躍的に向上させた有意義な巡業となった。

ジョンはその手の噂などには敏感で、
1963(昭和38)年06月18日(火) ポールの誕生日を祝う席で、当時リヴァプールでDJをしていたボブ・ウーラーにエプスタインとスペインへ出かけたことへの「ちょっとした関係」「ジョンの性的嗜好」を創作話で触れられた途端、暴力行為に及び、彼の顔面を何度も殴打した。翌日にはエプスタインが詫びを入れ、これをボブが受け入れたことで収まった。ケンカのニュースが北部版の全国紙に届いた時にはジョンは「酔っ払いのケンカだよ、本気じゃないさ」とコメントした。ジョンはボブに電報を送り、「とにかく悪かった、以上それだけ」と形式的に詫びを入れた[5]。1969年のインタビューでもわざわざエプスタインとの関係を否定するコメントを語り、以後この件はインタビュアーには暗黙の了解として後々までタブー視されていた

ポール・マッカートニーが健在ぶりを示した。６５回目の誕生日を前に2年ぶりのソロアルバム「メモリー・オールモスト・フル」をリリース。ビートルズ解散以降、ベスト盤とライブ盤を除いた作品は通算21作目というから、「2年に1枚」を上回るペースだ。
ここ数年はツアーも意欲的だ。受賞こそ逃しはしたが、2年連続でグラミー賞にもノミネートされた。リンゴにも新作発表の予定があるらしい。すでにジョンとジョージがこの世を去り、半分になってしまったビートルズ。残された2人が活躍するニュースを耳にするだけでもうれしいものだ。
新作のニュースを聞いて、つくづくポールは勤勉な人だと思った。僕が中学生だった30数年前、先妻リンダやデニー・レーンらと組んだバンド「ウイングス」は絶頂期を迎えていた。あれからジョンの射殺、一時的なスランプ、リンダの死など人生の苦難を何度も乗り越え、音楽活動を続けてきた。何か一つのことを達成しても、すぐ次のことに向けて考える性格らしい。映像編アンソロジーでは、そんな仕事熱心なポールにリンゴが脱帽するシーンが出てくる。
ポールが音楽に取りつかれたきっかけを、ジョンの美術学校時代からの友人で音楽紙「マージー・ビート」の創刊者ビル・ハリーは、母の死という悲劇に結びつける。看護婦だった母親メアリは45歳のとき乳がんに冒される。14歳だったポールは母の死を知らされ、「母さんの稼ぎがなかったら、ぼくたちはどうなる」と言った。その言葉の裏側にある深い悲しみが、彼を音楽の世界へ没頭させたに違いないと。
メアリはたびたびビートルズの歌に登場する。「どうやって生計をたてているの、家賃はどうやって払っているの」。「レディ・マドンナ」は働きものだった母親への賛歌だ。「レット・イット・ビー」では、苦しみ悩んでいる暗黒の時に「マザー・メアリ」が姿を現す。グループ内でほかの3人との疎外感に悩んでいた。リンダとの最初に産まれた娘には、メアリと名付けた。
父親ジェイムズの名誉のために一言付け加えるとすれば、妻の死後も飲んだくれることも女と出て行ったりすることもなく、ポールと弟の２人の子どもの面倒をしっかりみたそうだ。弟のマイクは「俺たち兄弟は父親に大きな借りがある」と後に語っている。ポールが音楽を始めたのは、ジャズバンドを結成していた父親の影響でもある。
新作の話題に戻るが、2番目の妻との一連の離婚騒動の渦中ということもあり、「追憶の彼方に」（邦題）というアルバムタイトルもなにやら意味深だ。40年前の6月1日、ビートルズの傑作アルバム「サージェント・ペパーズ・ロンリー・ハーツ・クラブ・バンド」が発売された。その中の1曲「ホエン・アイム・シックスティ・フォー」はポールが16歳のころ原形をつくり、その後、64歳になった父親に捧げるために作り直したとされる曲だ。 「僕が老いぼれてもバレンタインやバースデー・カード、それにワインも贈ってくれるかい」
64歳のバレンタインデーを、再婚した妻と別居して迎えることになろうとは、40年前に歌でも予想できなかっただろう。母の死を経験して以来、どんな困難が身に降りかかろうとも、音楽を癒しの糧にして前を向いてきたはずだ。また、新しいメロディーが生まれて来るに違いない。

Profile ⇒ 上林格(かみばやし・さとる）1962年生まれ。この年、ビートルズが「ＬＯＶＥ・ＭＥ・ＤＯ」で英国デビューした。1986年、朝日新聞社に入社。東京本社社会部、地域報道部、東京総局など勤務。東京版で「ビートルズの目撃者 日本公演から40年」を連載した。

On June 18th 1965, John Lennon stopped by ＢＢＣ-TVs 'Tonight' program for a chat about the upcoming release of his second book entitled 'A Spaniard In The Works'.'Tonight' was a topical magazine-style program presented live each weeknight by host Cliff Michelmore. It covered the arts, current affairs, as well as the sciences. The show was known for presenting serious interviews followed by lighter interest topics. It ran from February 1957 to June 1965. Lennon's new book would be released just six days later in the UK on (thu)June 24th

In 1968, John Lennon expressed an interest in overseeing the production of a movie based on his first two books, 'In His Own Write' and 'A Spaniard In The Works.' While a film of his books was never made, a play was produced. Victor Spinetti directed the play adaptation, entitled 'In His Own Write.' The play opened
●(tue)June 18th 1968 at the Old Vic Theatre in London. A book of the screenplay written by Adrienne Kennedy and Victor Spinetti based on John's characters was also published in 1968.
On June 6th 1968, Peter Lewis chatted with Lennon and Spinetti about the new play. The filmed interview would air on BBC-2 as part of the arts program 'Release.'
