60年代中期からインド志向を強め、ヒンドゥー教に由来する超越瞑想の指導者マハリシ・マヘーシュ・ヨーギーに傾倒したビートルズ。1968年2月に、ヨーギーの僧院があるインド北部リシケシュを訪問。その滞在時の記録に焦点を当てた最新ドキュメンタリー映画「The Beatles And India: A Feature-length Documentary Film」(2021年秋公開予定) が輸入盤ブルーレイ＆DVDで登場。2008年に出版された「アクロス・ザ・ユニヴァース：ザ・ビートルズ・イン・インディア」の著者でもあるアジョイ・ボーズが共同監督を務めた本作品は、インド各地でのロケ―ション映像に、貴重なアーカイヴ映像や音源、写真、目撃者の証言、専門家のコメントなどを交えて、ビートルズとインドとのミステリアス (？) な ”蜜月” 関係を追っている。『ホワイト・アルバム』の収録曲をはじめ、ジョージ・ハリスン作の「The Inner Light」、ジョン・レノンのソロ初期の未発表曲「India, India」など、精神世界だけでなく、作品や曲作り、クリエイティヴィティにも大きな影響を与えたと言われているこのインド滞在が実際どのようなものだったのか、ビートルズにとってのインド、またはインドがどのようにビートルズの進化に関わったのか、その内実が、この初の本格的な取材調査によって明かされることになるだろう。ブルーレイは、リージョンフリー ⇒ リージョン２（日本製プレーヤーでの視聴不可）となることが判明しました。またDVDは、PAL方式となります。

ザ･ビートルズの『Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band』は、史上最高にアイコニックなアルバム・ジャケットの座をいまだ維持し続けている。ポール・マッカートニーの着想から、イギリスのポップ・アーティスト、ピーター・ブレイクと妻のジャン・ハワースによる最終デザインに至るまで、これは単なるアルバム・ジャケットの枠を超えている。当時を象徴する見事なモダン・アート作品なのだ。このアートワークは、当時としては画期的なデザインだった。また、制作費用が3,000ポンド（現在では5万ポンド以上に相当する）と破格で、当時のポップ・アルバムのジャケットでは最高額である。コンセプトは、ザ・ビートルズが「サージェント・ペパーズ・ロンリー・ハーツ・クラブ・バンド」に扮して登場し、今ちょうどコンサートを終えたところで影響力の大きな人々の集団に囲まれている、というものだ。合計58人が、最終版のアートワークに登場している。ジャケットに登場した人々は、ジョン、ポール、ジョージ、ピーター・ブレイク、ジャン・ハワース、そしてロンドンの美術品商、ロバート・フレイザーが共同で作ったリストから選ばれた。イエス・キリストとアドルフ・ヒトラーは、掲載には不適切とされ、マハトマ・ガンジーやレオ・ゴーシーといった人々は、別の理由で削除された。また、エルヴィス・プレスリーの顔がないのも気になるが、これはポール・マッカートニーが後年語っているが、「あまりに重要で、雲の上の存在すぎて、口にするだけでも畏れ多い存在」だったからだという。最終ヴァージョンに残った人々は、文化人や重要人物、さらにはザ・ビートルズのメンバーが関心を持つ人々が並ぶ魅惑的な顔ぶれだ。「Sgt. I thought I was different from other people in my relationship with the Beatles and being loved by them and treated so nice, I felt like one of the family. Seems I fetch and carry. I find it difficult to live on the ￡38 I take home each week and would love to be like their other friends who buy fantastic homes and have all the alterations done by them, and are still going to ask for a rise. I always tell myself - look, everybody wants to take from, be satisfied, try to give and you will receive. After all this time I have about ￡70 to my name, but was content and happy. Loving them as I do, nothing is too much trouble, because I want to serve them.

The Let it Be film is to feature the Beatles in what is to become their last public performance, on the rooftop of the Apple office in London's Saville Row. Squabbles put to one side, the band, accompanied by Billy Preston on keyboards, are clearly enjoying themselves. Mal is unusually perky too.

"In January of 1963, I starred in my own movie with the Beatles. I had left school at age 16 in 1960, window-dressed for Mary Quant, bummed around Europe and the South of France, hung coats at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club and finally ferreted my way into pop music by becoming press agent for Mark Wynter, a teen idol who'd scored big in the charts with "Venus in Blue Jeans" and "Go Away, Little Girl." One of my duties for Mr. Wynter involved my accompanying him to Birmingham for the filming of the top pop program of the day, ABC TV's Thank Your Lucky Stars. Watching from the wings, I was held by this group - the Beatles - performing their new release and second single, "Please, Please Me" on national television. For me, it was a pop epiphany.
They weren't that different in appearance from the other acts. They were all wearing suits and ties, but they exuded an attitude that was blunt, up and honest as they mimed to the soundtrack of their single. The sound was familiar, but this was no mere copy of the American music we all loved - it took it to another level and injected the Pentecostal joy back into rock 'n' roll. The group would bring this gospel of pop to America and take it from being a long-distance collage of dead Kennedys, wide-open spaces and doo-wop skyscraper opportunity into the brave new world of the '60s. And a few months after that, the Beatles had taken over the world.
I went over to John Lennon and asked him who their manager was. He stuck his thumb in the direction of an elegant-looking man standing in the hall. Brian Epstein radiated success in his expensive overcoat, paisley scarf and haughty demeanor; a younger Kevin Spacey would have loved to play Eppy in rep. I studied this unpop-looking hotshot for a moment and quickly decided he was worth a hustle. He was definitely a man obsessed, a man on a mission - and I wanted in. We took each other's measure and passed the tests."

"A BEATLES fan literally had a 'ticket to ride' when she put a set of autographs of the Fab Four up for auction on Friday. The autographs, contained on a Whitchurch Civic Hall ticket stub, sold for ￡2,300 at Halls in Shrewsbury after keen competition from two bidders.
The local buyer, a keen fan of The Beatles, held off competition from an eBay bidder.
The owner, who lives in Oswestry, collected the autographs when The Beatles played at Whitchurch Civic Hall in 1962, before they became famous.
Stewart Orr, toys expert at Halls, explained the woman had attended the concert with a friend at about the time of the group's first single, Love Me Do, which was released on
(fri)October 5, 1962.
"She arrived early and was sitting in the foyer at Whitchurch Civic Hall waiting for a friend when Paul McCartney came in and asked if they wanted to meet the rest of the group backstage," he said.
"The only thing that the girls had to sign was the stub of a ticket for a concert by Chris Barber's Jazz Band. As an extra bonus, the owner of the autographs got to kiss John Lennon.

この日ビートルズは人気TV音楽番組『サンク･ユア･ラッキー･スターズ (Thank Your Lucky Stars)』に出演する。これは彼らにとってこれまでで最も重要なTV出演であった。この日アルファ･テレビジョン･スタジオ (Alpha Television Studios) で彼らの演奏が収録された。バーミンガムのアストン (Aston, Birmingham) にあり、後のATVスタジオとして知られる。この番組はABCテレビ (ABC Televison) がITVネットワーク (ITV Network) のために制作していた。ABCはミッドランド (Midlands) と北イングランドのエリアに番組を放送し、アルファ･スタジオはABCとATVの共同所有であった。この番組はミッドランドでは平日に、ロンドンでは週末に放映されていた。『サンク･ユア･ラッキー･スターズ』は、BBCの『ジューク･ボックス･ジューリー (Juke Box Jury)』に対するITVの解答であった。それは1961の4月にスタートし、多くのときめくトップ･ミュージシャンが出演していた。出演者は普通はスタジオの観衆を前にレコードに合わせてくちパクした。ビートルズは7組の出演者リストの最後に書かれ、『Please Please Me』をくちパクしている。この収録は6日後の1月19日(土)にオンエアされたが、彼らの登場部分は前半最後で、CMの直前だった。当時『サンク･ユア･ラッキー･スターズ』は非常に人気の高い番組で、ビートルズがそれに出演できたことは1つの大事件であった。彼らの出演はディック･ジェームス (Dick James) によって確保されたのであった。彼はもともとは歌手から転身した音楽出版業者だったが、ビートルズの曲を管理するようになってから巨万の富を蓄積している。

1963(昭和38)年01月13日(日) バーミンガムのアルファ・テレビジョン・スタジオでイギリスのティーンエイジャーのほとんどが見ていた人気音楽テレビ番組「サンク・ユア・ラッキー・スターズ」に初出演した。ビートルズの音楽出版版権管理代理人のディック・ジェイムズの尽力によって出演が実現した。これはビートルズにとって初めての全国ネットのテレビ出演で、視聴者のほぼすべての人が初めてビートルズを目にする機会となった。7組の出演者の中でビートルズは最も格下で番組前半が終了する直前のコマーシャルまでのあいだに「Please Please Me」を口パクで演奏した。放送は1月19日午後5時50分から。ディックはこの仕事を評価されて、ビートルズの版権を得て後に莫大な財産を手にすることになる。

I'm taking a wild guess on this photo. It's assumed this is a rehearsal for a television appearance. Because they are some distance from the microphone, I would assume that they are miming. Ringo's blank drum head, would place it in January 1963. One source dates this as the 17 October 1962 edition of People And Places but Ringo's drum head proves otherwise.

●ディスク2の後半は、現存が確認されている「Drop In」、1963年12月1日放送分、1965年1月13日放送分の2回分を完全収録しています。ビートルズは出演していませんが、同時期のアーティストが数多く出演しており、当時のミュージックシーンを知る一級の資料となっています。「Drop In」はビートルズが出演した1963年10月30日放送分と、ここに収録の2回分、合計3回分のみ、フルで残っていることになります。注目は1963年12月1日放送分にペースメーカーズが出演している点でしょう。この時の映像から「How Do You Do It」が部分的に映像版アンソロジーに使用されましたが、本作にはその完全版のみならず、もう1曲「A Shot Of Rhythm & Blues」も収録されています。アンソロジーＣＤにはビートルズが演奏する「How Do You Do It？」が収録されていますが、このペースメーカーズの演奏の方が断然出来が良く、ビートルズのメンバーがノリ気でなかった、結局ボツになった理由が、この日のペースメーカーズの演奏から伺えます。
