What light does the study of past science cast on the meaning of human experience and in paticular, to what extent does it sustain the belief in the progress of civilization?
Leaving on one side the pessimitic theories prevalent in antiquity but alien to modern thought. we reach the conclution that, while the last four centuries have witnessed a steady advance in the field of pure, and even more clealy, applied, science any wider generalization as to the onward mach of civilization can hardly be suppoted.
