『日本書紀』 素戔嗚尊の誓約2
一書曰、日神、本知素戔嗚尊有武健凌物之意、及其上至、便謂「弟所以來者、非是善意。必當奪我天原。」乃設大夫武備、躬帶十握劒・九握劒・八握劒、又背上負靫、又臂著稜威高鞆、手捉弓箭、親迎防禦。是時、素戔嗚尊告曰「吾元無惡心。唯欲與姉相見、只爲暫來耳。」於是、日神共素戔嗚尊、相對而立誓曰「若汝心明淨、不有凌奪之意者、汝所生兒、必當男矣。」言訖、先食所帶十握劒生兒、號瀛津嶋姬。又食九握劒生兒、號湍津姬。又食八握劒生兒、號田心姬。凡三女神矣。已而素戔嗚尊、以其頸所嬰五百箇御統之瓊、濯于天渟名井亦名去來之眞名井而食之、乃生兒、號正哉吾勝勝速日天忍骨尊。次天津彥根命、次活津彥根命、次天穗日命、次熊野忍蹈命、凡五男神矣。故素戔嗚尊、既得勝驗。於是、日神、方知素戔嗚尊固無惡意、乃以日神所生三女神、令降於筑紫洲、因教之曰「汝三神、宜降居道中、奉助天孫而爲天孫所祭也。」
一書曰、素戔嗚尊、將昇天時、有一神、號羽明玉、此神奉迎而進以瑞八坂瓊之曲玉。故、素戔嗚尊、持其瓊玉而到之於天上也。是時、天照大神、疑弟有惡心、起兵詰問。素戔嗚尊對曰「吾所以來者、實欲與姉相見。亦欲獻珍寶瑞八坂瓊之曲玉耳、不敢別有意也。」時天照大神、復問曰「汝言虛實、將何以爲驗。」對曰「請吾與姉共立誓約。誓約之間、生女爲黑心、生男爲赤心。」乃掘天眞名井三處、相與對立。是時、天照大神、謂素戔嗚尊曰「以吾所帶之劒、今當奉汝。汝、以汝所持八坂瓊之曲玉、可以授予矣。」如此約束、共相換取。已而、天照大神、則以八坂瓊之曲玉、浮寄於天眞名井、囓斷瓊端、而吹出氣噴之中化生神、號市杵嶋姬命、是居于遠瀛者也。又囓斷瓊中、而吹出氣噴之中化生神、號田心姬命、是居于中瀛者也。又囓斷瓊尾、而吹出氣噴之中化生神、號湍津姬命、是居于海濱者也。凡三女神。於是、素戔嗚尊、以所持劒、浮寄於天眞名井、囓斷劒末、而吹出氣噴之中化生神、號天穗日命。次正哉吾勝勝速日天忍骨尊、次天津彥根命、次活津彥根命、次熊野櫲樟日命、凡五男神、云爾。

One account says, “Amaterasu, the Sun Goddess, understood that Susanoo-no-Mikoto had intentions of violence and supremacy, even to the point of saying, ‘My younger brother did not come here with good intentions. He must be trying to seize my celestial plain.’ Therefore, she prepared her great warriors with their swords - ten-handed swords, nine-handed swords, and eight-handed swords, and she even carried arrows on her back, wore the arm protector called “Ryōi-takami,” and held a bow and arrows in her hands for her defense. At that moment, Susanoo-no-Mikoto said, ‘I had no ill intentions from the start. I only came to visit my sister temporarily.’ So, Amaterasu and Susanoo-no-Mikoto stood face to face and made an oath, saying, ‘If your heart is truly pure, without any intention of aggression, your offspring shall all be male.’ After saying this, Amaterasu first ate the offspring produced from the ten-handed sword, named Yatsutsu-shima-hime. Then she ate the offspring produced from the nine-handed sword, named Tawatsu-hime. Finally, she ate the offspring produced from the eight-handed sword, named Tagorihime. In total, there were three female deities.
Afterward, Susanoo-no-Mikoto took the magatama jewels, numbering five hundred, that hung from his neck and washed them in the heavenly stream called the ‘Namekawa-no-I,’ also known as ‘Gokurai-no-Shinme-no-I.’ Then, he ate them and gave birth to his sons. The first son was named Masakatsu-wake-ikatsu-hayahi-amenotenokoto. The second son was named Ame-no-tokotachi-no-kami. The third son was named Ame-no-hohi-no-kami. The fourth son was named Kumano-oshotomimizuchi-no-kami. In total, there were five male deities. This is how Susanoo-no-Mikoto confirmed the truth.
Amaterasu, at this point, realized that Susanoo-no-Mikoto had no ill intentions. Therefore, she ordered the three female deities born of Amaterasu to descend to Tsukushi province and instructed them as follows: ‘You three deities should descend and live along the roads to assist the heavenly descendants and be the deities to be worshipped by the heavenly descendants.’
In another account, when Susanoo-no-Mikoto was about to ascend to the heavens, there was a deity called Uzume-no-mikoto, who presented and offered the curved jewel ‘Yasakani-no-magatama’ as a divine offering. Thus, Susanoo-no-Mikoto held this jeweled treasure and presented it upon his arrival in the heavens. At that time, Amaterasu, the Great Sun Goddess, suspected that her younger brother had evil intentions and raised her troops to question him. Susanoo-no-Mikoto explained, ‘I came here to meet my sister and to present this precious and divine curved jewel, Yasakani-no-magatama. I have no other intentions.’ Amaterasu then inquired, ‘How can you prove the truth of your words?’ Susanoo-no-Mikoto replied, ‘Let’s make a solemn pact between us. During this pact, if a female deity is born, it indicates a black heart; if a male deity is born, it indicates a pure heart.’ They proceeded to dig three heavenly true-name wells and stood facing each other. Amaterasu said to Susanoo-no-Mikoto, ‘With the sword I carry, I will bestow it upon you. You, in return, should present your Yasakani-no-magatama. This will serve as a mutual guarantee.’ They agreed to this pact and exchanged items. Afterward, Amaterasu floated the Yasakani-no-magatama in the heavenly true-name well, bit off the end of the magatama, and blew into it. From this, the deity named Ichikishima-hime-no-mikoto was born, and she resided in a distant region. Then, Amaterasu bit off the center of the magatama and blew into it, and the deity named Tagorihime-no-mikoto was born, residing in a central region. Lastly, she bit off the tail of the magatama and blew into it, creating the deity named Tawatsu-hime-no-mikoto, who resided by the seaside. In total, there were three female deities. After that, Susanoo-no-Mikoto floated the sword he carried in the heavenly true-name well, bit off the tip of the sword, and blew into it. The deity named Ame-no-hohi-no-kami was born. Then followed Masakatsu-wake-ikatsu-hayahi-amenotenokoto, Ame-no-tokotachi-no-kami, Ame-no-hohi-no-kami, and Kumano-oshotomimizuchi-no-kami, making a total of five male deities.
