Nansui is mainly grown in Nagano Prefecture. Its flesh is soft yet crispy, and very juicy. The core not being sour is a characteristic of this pear. The best known fact about Nansui is its storage life. After picking and being kept in room temperature, it would last a month; in chilled conditions for 3 months, and in frozen conditions for 6 months. However, the growing methods and techniques are not easy to replicate. The name “Nansui” is derived from its refreshing aspect from South Shinshu and nobleness from the Southern Alps mountains; “Nan” meaning south. Some of these Nansui pears weigh 500 grams.
