Amaou strawberries were developed to replace Toyonoka strawberries and became the most popular strawberries in Japan. The name, Amaou comes from the first letter A from Akai (red), the first two letters MA from Marui (circle), the first letter O from Ookii (big) and the first letter U from Umai (tasty). Hence the name Amaou because they are red, round, big and sweet. Amaou strawberries are produced exclusively in Fukuoka prefecture. This controls their consistent high quality and helps maintain the status of Amaou strawberries' as a brand.
福岡県の農業総合試験場で育成された品種です。粒の大きさや、いちごの持つ魅力（甘味やコク、香り、色ツヤなど）の全てにおいて「とよのか」超えることを目指して育成されました。約6年間の試行錯誤の末、平成13年11月、品種登録申請され、その後、親しみやすい名称をということで、一般公募の中から「あまおう」が選ばれました。
あまおうの「あ」は「あかい」、「ま」は「まあるい」、「お」は「おおきい」「う」は「うまい」を合わせたのが名前の由来です。
