ザ･ビートルズの『Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band』は、史上最高にアイコニックなアルバム・ジャケットの座をいまだ維持し続けている。ポール・マッカートニーの着想から、イギリスのポップ・アーティスト、ピーター・ブレイクと妻のジャン・ハワースによる最終デザインに至るまで、これは単なるアルバム・ジャケットの枠を超えている。当時を象徴する見事なモダン・アート作品なのだ。このアートワークは、当時としては画期的なデザインだった。また、制作費用が3,000ポンド（現在では5万ポンド以上に相当する）と破格で、当時のポップ・アルバムのジャケットでは最高額である。コンセプトは、ザ・ビートルズが「サージェント・ペパーズ・ロンリー・ハーツ・クラブ・バンド」に扮して登場し、今ちょうどコンサートを終えたところで影響力の大きな人々の集団に囲まれている、というものだ。合計58人が、最終版のアートワークに登場している。ジャケットに登場した人々は、ジョン、ポール、ジョージ、ピーター・ブレイク、ジャン・ハワース、そしてロンドンの美術品商、ロバート・フレイザーが共同で作ったリストから選ばれた。イエス・キリストとアドルフ・ヒトラーは、掲載には不適切とされ、マハトマ・ガンジーやレオ・ゴーシーといった人々は、別の理由で削除された。また、エルヴィス・プレスリーの顔がないのも気になるが、これはポール・マッカートニーが後年語っているが、「あまりに重要で、雲の上の存在すぎて、口にするだけでも畏れ多い存在」だったからだという。最終ヴァージョンに残った人々は、文化人や重要人物、さらにはザ・ビートルズのメンバーが関心を持つ人々が並ぶ魅惑的な顔ぶれだ。「Sgt. After more than four months recording what is now known as “Sgt. Pepper”, along with the “Strawberry Fields Forever” & “Penny Lane” single, the final song recorded for the sessions was the reprise for the title track of the album. During this 11-hour session, The Beatles initially recorded around 10 rehearsal takes with the basic track consisting of lead and rhythm guitar, Hammond organ and drums all recorded on track one of the four track tape, along with Paul’s guide vocal on track four. After this, nine proper attempts at the backing track were recorded with ‘take 9’ being deemed best. Onto ‘take 9’, Paul overdubbed his bass on track two, vocals by all four Beatles (Supposedly Ringo also sang on the song but I can’t detect anything from him) were added on track three and Paul’s guide vocal on track four were erased by a percussion track (maracas and tambourine). The final job of the session was to mix the song into mono with nine attempts made. During the mixing session, the vocals were treated with artificial double tracking and some of the audience effects from the original song were added as well. ‘RM9’ was deemed best and is the version released on mono pressings of the album.
One thing to point out is that ‘take 5’ released on Anthology 2 had Paul’s bass overdub ‘flown in’ from the master performance. 'Take 8' was released on the 50th Anniversary edition of the album.

Medley of really short outtakes recorded during the Sgt. Pepper sessions. On
06 December 1966 The Beatles recorded Christmas messages for the pirate stations Radio London and Radio Caroline. Afterwards they spent some time rehearsing When I'm Sixty-Four, before two takes of the rhythm track were recorded. Sgt. Pepper was recorded over four days. On
01 February 1967 The Beatles taped nine takes of the rhythm track, though only the first and last of these were complete. They recorded drums, bass and two guitars - the latter played by McCartney and Harrison. The recording of Fixing A Hole began on
09 February 1967. The Beatles used Regent Sound Studio in London as Abbey Road was unavailable. It was the first time the group used another studio to record for EMI. The Beatles began recording Good Morning Good Morning on 8 February 1967. They recorded eight takes, the final of which was considered best. The first seven takes of Mr. Kite were recorded on 17 February 1967, the day the Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever single was released in the UK. In Abbey Road's studio two they taped the rhythm track only - bass, drums and harmonium - with Lennon's first vocal being overdubbed onto take seven. Lovely Rita began on
23 February 1967 in Abbey Road's studio two. Eight takes of the rhythm track were recorded, with George Harrison and John Lennon on acoustic guitars, Ringo playing the drums and Paul on piano. Take eight was the best, and onto this McCartney added his bass part. The Beatles spent an eight-hour night time session on 28 February 1967 rehearsing Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds without any recording taking place. Getting Better began on Thursday
09 March. Seven takes were recorded of the rhythm track, being made up of guitars, bass and drums, plus piano from George Martin - played by the strings of the instrument being directly struck. She's Leaving Home did not feature any musical instruments played by The Beatles. Instead it had a string backing, with a harp, violins, violas, cellos and a double bass. It was scored by Mike Leander, a freelance producer and arranger, because George Martin was unavailable at the short notice demanded by McCartney. Sgt Pepper (Reprise) was recorded on Saturday
†01 April 1967 in Abbey Road's vast studio one. Between 7pm and 6am The Beatles firstly recorded nine takes of the rhythm track, with McCartney singing a guide vocal. They then overdubbed vocals to take nine, along with extra instrumentation. George Harrison was the only Beatle present during the recording of Within You Without You. He and Neil Aspinall played tamburas while Indian musicians performed traditional instruments.

The band, with Paul taking an increasingly dominant role, was showing signs of stress. Mal wrote "I would get requests from the four of them to do six different things at one time and it was always a case of relying on instinct and experience in awarding priorities. They used to be right sods for the first few days until they realized that everything was going smoothly and they could get into the routine of recording...T Then I would find time between numerous cups of tea and salad sandwiches and baked beans on toast to listen to the recording in the control room."
Once they'd completed the recording, Mal, Neil and their families were whisked off to Greece by the Beatles at George Harrison's expense. They spent a month under sunny skies on a wooden yacht in the Aegean. But their return. however, darker clouds were forming on the horizon. Before the summer was out, Epstein was dead after an overdose. Without his guiding hand, the Beatles plunged into the chaotic Magical Mystery Tour project. As ever, Mal was a crucial element, organizing the coach tour that formed the centerpiece of the film, recruiting actors and extras, then flying to Nice with Paul to film the Fool on the Hill sequence.
According to Mal, this trip, as did many, took place on an impulse; without luggage or papers. Paul sailed through immigration with no passport, but they were refused entry to the hotel restaurant because they didn't look the part. They headed off to a nightclub. "We had dinner in my room... The only money we had between us had been spent on clothes, on the understanding that money was to be forwarded from England by the Beatles office. After the first round of drinks... we arranged with the manager for us to get credit."
The next day, Mal and Paul returned to the club. "We took advantage of our credit standing, as money had still not arrived from England. News about Paul's visit to the club the previous night had spread, and the place was jammed. Now Paul, being a generous sort of person, had built up quite a bar bill, when the real manager of the club arrived demanding that we pay immediately. On explaining who Paul was and what happened, he answered, "You either pay the bill, or I call the police!" It certainly looked like we were getting thrown in jail. It was ironical, sitting in a club with a millionaire, unable to pay the bill." Eventually the hotel manager agreed to cover the money.
Paul and Mal returned to London, where Paul was to edit the film. But it was panned by the critics when televised that Christmas.
