Today's phrasal verb is “break down”. Don't forget, be aware of the context when using phrasal verbs, because this can change their meaning. 

Today we're looking at the top four ways that we use the phrasal verb “break down”. 

1) “Break down” means to stop functioning. For example: 

  • My car broke down on the way to work this morning. 
  • The elevator broke down, so we had to take the stairs. 

2) “Break down” means to divide or separate something into smaller parts to make it easier to understand or to deal with. For example: 

  • Let's break down the task into three easy steps. 
  • They broke down the budget to see where they could cut costs. 

3) “Break down”  can mean to lose control of your emotions. 

  • He broke down at his son's funeral. 

4) We can also use “Break down”  to talk about a relationship or a discussion that fails because of a problem or disagreement. For example: 

  • Talks with business leaders broke down last night. 
  • Paola’s marriage broke down.
