Former Dolphins fullback Rob Konrad, who signed a one-year, $700,000 contract with the Oakland Raiders last month, has decided to retire, his agent Drew Rosenhaus said on WSVN's Sports Extra on Sunday night.
Konrad, 28, a second-round pick out of Syracuse in 1999, told Rosenhaus that football was no longer fun.
Konrad said in March that he considered retiring earlier this offseason following last year's 4-12 finish. "I was just miserable the whole year for a lot of different reasons," said Konrad, who was released by the Dolphins after six seasons.
Konrad's frustration in 2004 stemmed from injuries and his lack of production.
He spent a week hospitalized for an infected bursa sac in his leg and missed the first three games. When he returned, Konrad's leg had atrophied, and his performance suffered.
"I'm not such a naturally gifted athlete that I can just step out and play," Konrad said. "I missed a month of training and conditioning. I then tried to play, and it was bad. I played poorly for three games.
"I started to come on at the end of the year, but my back was hurt and I saw the doctor. The next thing I know, I'm on injured reserve without being asked."
Even when healthy, Konrad wasn't as effective as when he played in 2002 and 2003 under former offensive coordinator Norv Turner, who is now Oakland's coach. Konrad's best NFL season came in 2002 when he caught 34 passes, scored three touchdowns and helped pave the way for Ricky Williams' 1,853-yard rushing season.
Konrad said former coach Dave Wannstedt pushed a run-heavy attack in 2003 that resulted in an offense not nearly as effective as the previous season.
"Norv was kind of handcuffed and frustrated with Dave and how much we were running the football," Konrad said.
"When Norv had more latitude with what we were doing and we had more balance, we had a pretty good offense with the players we had."
Playing all six years of his NFL career with the Dolphins, Konrad gained 114 yards (3.0 yards a carry) and had 111 catches for 854 yards with seven touchdowns.
