FROM THE ARCHIVES: Dolphins draft history

Sun Sentinel

Stories from the Sun-Sentinel archive show what was thought of the Dolphins' draft picks at the time they were selected.

1985: Run-thirsty Dolphins get Gator aid
The temptation was to draft a defensive player. But when the decision arrived for the Miami Dolphins shortly before noon Tuesday, the memory of 25 yards rushing in Super Bowl XIX was too vivid to ignore.

1986: Dolphins happy with 52 pickup
Two plays. Two tremendous hits. That`s what it took to convince coach Don Shula that Western Michigan inside linebacker John Offerdahl could make an immediate difference in the Dolphins` porous defense.

1987: Defense gets 1-2 punch
The last time John Bosa visited Miami he was a sophomore at Boston College and teammates Doug Flutie and Gerard Phelan were collaborating to make Bernie Kosar and the Miami Hurricanes miserable.

1988: Kumerow the surprise pick
The Miami Dolphins satisfied their greatest need Sunday by drafting a pass-rusher with their first pick. What remains to be seen is if they solved any of their problems with the selection.

1989: FSU's Smith top Dolphin
Early Sunday morning, Don Shula and his assistants drafted their final first-round game plan.

1990: Dolphins fill up on beef
Where`s the beef?

1991: Fast wideout Hill can stay in Miami
MIAMI -- In the quarterback draft of 1983, the Dolphins got Dan Marino. In the wide receiver draft of 1991, they got Randal Hill.

1992: Shula puts 'D' back in Dolphins
Tired of teams piling up points and yardage, the Dolphins piled on the defense in Day 1 of the 1992 draft.

1993: Dolphins get their O.J.
The Dolphins thought it was better to receive than to give in the NFL Draft on Sunday.

1994: It's big reach for Dolphins
The Miami Dolphins stuck by their plan to take an interior defensive lineman, even when it amounted to taking someone who coach Don Shula called "a project."

1995: Dolphins toe line -- twice
Dolphins director of college scouting Tom Braatz wore his favorite Texas tie, a light blue hoedown shirt and striking cowboy boots. The Dolphins were looking for an offensive lineman who can do the pass-block two-step and think they found one in the Lone Star State.

1996: Dolphin gamble: Gardener
Give the Dolphins credit. They were ready to gamble Saturday.

1997: Dolphins think big
Trader Jimmy sat still in the first round for the second year in a row and managed to take a flyer, again.

1998: High-speed impact
The search for impact players could have yielded players of greater intrigue and fame this week. Instead, the Dolphins took their chances on a bunch of lesser-known types on the first day of the annual NFL Draft on Saturday as coach Jimmy Johnson made two more trades.

1999: Power play unfolds
The indications as to which direction they would take in the draft were evident well before they made their first selection.

2000: Dolphins beef up offense
Dolphins coach Dave Wannstedt showed just how serious he is about improving his team's rushing game in Saturday's NFL Draft.

2001: Dolphins have it covered
Say cheese.

2002: Dolphins address offense in draft
Tight end is no longer an afterthought in the Dolphins' passing offense.

2003: Dolphins' first pick surprises
Eddie Moore wasn't the only one stunned after becoming the first player chosen by the Dolphins in Saturday's draft.

2004: Dolphins deal to grab Carey
The Dolphins consider their first-round selection of Miami offensive lineman Vernon Carey a draft-day victory over the defending Super Bowl champions. The Dolphins believe they outmaneuvered New England and Dallas on Saturday to acquire Carey by swinging a trade with Minnesota, moving up one spot to No. 19 in exchange for their own first- and fourth-round draft choices.
