Dolphins Press Release

The Miami Dolphins today waived/failed physical defensive tackle Tim Bowens, the team announced.

"Tim talked to me and said he wanted to retire as a Dolphin, and we wanted to accommodate his request," said Dolphins Head Coach Nick Saban. "Today's transaction is a procedural method to allow him to do that.

"Tim has been a cornerstone of the team's defense for more than a decade, and during that time has acquired a well-deserved reputation as one of the best defensive tackles in the league. We want to thank him for his contributions to the Dolphins and we’re looking forward to maintaining a close relationship with him in the future."

"I am grateful to the Dolphins for all the years I have been able to play in Miami," Bowens said. “I appreciate all of the support I have received throughout my career from the fans, from my teammates and coaches and from the rest of the Dolphins organization. It will be exciting to remain a part of the team in my new role as a member of the Dolphins alumni."

Bowens was a first-round draft choice of the Dolphins in 1994 out of Ole Miss, and immediately made an impact on the franchise. He started 15 of the 16 games in which he played as a rookie, recording 63 tackles, three sacks, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. He was a consensus all-rookie selection and was the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year by several outlets.

Overall in his 11-year career, Bowens appeared in 157 regular season contests, including 155 starts. He amassed 558 tackles, 22 sacks, five fumble recoveries, 13 forced fumbles and an interception. He was selected to a pair of Pro Bowls in his career, following the 1999 and 2002 seasons. Bowens also will be known for the durability that he exhibited. He finished his career ranked 11th in team history for games played, a figure which is second-most among defensive linemen (159 by Vern Den Herder). His 155 starts are fourth-most in club history and the most among defensive linemen. From his rookie season through 2000, he played in 104 straight games, tied for the sixth-longest streak in club history, while his 92 consecutive starts between 1994 and 1999 is the third-longest such streak in club annals. In fact, over the first ten years of his career, he missed a total of just five games.
