T. Bowens might retire

Dolphins defensive tackle Tim Bowens is pondering retirement, while the club is studying how and when to break ties with its longest standing veteran.

Bowens, 32, who has played 12 seasons for Miami and is the only player remaining from the Don Shula era, got bad news last week when he visited a specialist and was told he has made no progress in recovering from the back ailment that forced him to miss all but two games last season.

The doctor also told Bowens nothing could be done to cure the problem, short of hoping time would do the trick. A source close to Bowens said Sunday that the player is frustrated with his condition to the point where retirement is now a serious consideration.

Bowens could not be reached for comment. His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, did not return calls.

Bowens has been unable to participate in any of Miami's offseason training sessions, and the injury is so serious he can't even stand on the field for extended periods of time, according to the source.

The Dolphins have made it no secret that the defensive tackle spot Bowens is supposed to occupy is a concern because of Bowens' and Larry Chester's health issues.

Chester is recovering from reconstructive knee surgery but said earlier this month that he would participate in training camp.

''Those are really the only guys we have who are defensive tackles,'' coach Nick Saban said.

``You really need both, and if we had everyone healthy, we would have what we need. But that's not the case.''

怪我で引退の可能性が大のようです。
非常に残念です。

Bowens’ return looks unlikely

Sun Sentinel

The only member of the Dolphins' current roster to play under Don Shula, Jimmy Johnson and Dave Wannstedt probably won't get that same opportunity under first-year coach Nick Saban.

Tim Bowens' continuing problems in recovering from a back injury that sidelined him almost all of last season have left serious doubts about his return for a 12th NFL season. Saban admitted there is "some concern" about the status of Bowens and fellow defensive tackle Larry Chester, who recently needed arthroscopic surgery to clean loose debris from a right knee that was reconstructed last September.

"I think both those situations are a little bit up in the air right now," Saban said.

Chester, though, recently received a strong commitment for the 2005 season when the Dolphins decided not to release him before having to pay a weight-based incentive clause. Chester collected what is believed a six-figure bonus by tipping the scales at 338 pounds, which is just 13 more than his 2004 playing weight of 325.

Excess bulk has long been an issue with Bowens as well, but his attitude may be proving just as much of a detriment when he recently left team headquarters in a huff.

One source said Bowens became so angry at criticism from new defensive line coach Dan Quinn that he walked out of a meeting. Another source said Bowens left more out of frustration with his lack of progress in recuperating from a herniated disc than any beef with Quinn.

Dolphins officials didn't immediately respond when asked for comment about the situation.

Such behavior isn't expected to fly for long under Saban, who is unlikely to treat the 32-year-old Bowens with the same kid gloves that Wannstedt did the previous five seasons when he was among the AFC's better run-stuffing defensive tackles.

The Dolphins still may hold onto Bowens entering the preseason even if they are able to sign free agent defensive tackle Keith Traylor, who is being courted by the franchise. But Bowens will need to show he can remain healthy and earn the trust of the coaching staff. Otherwise, the Dolphins likely will balk at guaranteeing Bowens' $765,000 base salary for 2005 by having him on their opening-game roster.

Packers cede '06 pick to fortify line

ESPNNet Sportszone

Still seeking to add offensive line depth before the start of the season, the Green Bay Packers have acquired fourth-year veteran blocker Brad Bedell from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a conditional seventh-round choice in the 2006 draft.

Bedell, 27, will be joining his fourth NFL team and, though he is not a lock to make the Packers' regular-season roster, his versatility made him attractive to the Green Bay coaches, who are attempting to fortify the backup spots.

A former University of Colorado standout, Bedell can play guard and tackle, and Packers officials have been looking to add a veteran "swing" blocker. In three seasons, Bedell has appeared in 27 games and started four of them. He has not played in a regular-season game since 2001, however, when he was with Washington and started in four of 15 appearances.

He was claimed by the Dolphins in November, when Washington waived him, but spent his seven weeks with Miami on the inactive list. Bedell was out of the league for the 2002 season, but his size (6 feet 4, 302 pounds) still make him a prospect.

The Packers have been beset by injuries in training camp, and two starters, guard Mike Wahle (bruised femur) and center Mike Flanagan (patellar tendinitis), recently came off the preseason physically unable to perform list. If those two are healthy, Green Bay is expected to have one of the NFL's premier blocking units again.

Depth has been a problem for the Packers, however, and the team is hopeful Bedell can emerge as a solid backup.

Even with the addition of Bedell, who entered the NFL as a sixth-round selection of the Cleveland Browns in the 2000 draft, the Packers may scan the waiver wires for possible backup linemen.

Dolphins re-sign WR Boston to one-year deal

2005-05-19 | Weblog
Miami Herald

The Miami Dolphins re-signed troubled wide receiver David Boston to a one-year deal Wednesday, two months after the team cut him for failing a physical as he recovered from season-ending knee surgery.

Boston missed all of last season after injuring his left knee during a training camp practice in Houston on Aug. 6. He spent the entire season on injured reserve before he was released in March.

While recovering, Boston ran into trouble off the field.

In December, the NFL suspended the 6-foot-2 receiver for four games for testing positive for steroids. Unable to play, Boston instead lost $1.34 million, one-fourth of his $5.35 million salary. Boston has denied using steroids.

Then in February, he pleaded no contest to a charge that he struck a ticket agent at the Burlington International Airport four months earlier. He had been rehabilitating the knee in Vermont, where he had the surgery.

Boston was acquired from San Diego before last season in exchange for cornerback Jamar Fletcher and a 2005 sixth-round draft pick. The first pick by the Arizona Cardinals in 1999, Boston's best season was 2001, when he had 98 receptions for 1,598 yards and eight touchdowns.

After signing with the Chargers in 2003, he had 70 catches for 880 yards and seven scores, but was dealt because of run-ins with coach Marty Schottenheimer.
