EX- coach on ex-coach

2005-06-26 | Weblog
Sun Sentinel

Don Shula recently lambasted Jimmy Johnson for trampling on the franchise's history upon replacing him as coach in 1996.

"One of the first things that he said at the opening banquet was that he doesn't care what they've done here in the past. All he's interested in is the future," Shula said last week on Fox Sports Radio.

Our fans are so proud of the accomplishments of the Dolphins starting in 1970 and the perfect season and back-to-back Super Bowls. ... And then Johnson wants to throw all that [away] and just talk about his own accomplish-ments, and they turned out to be non-accomplishments."

Shula praised Saban for the way he is handling the Dolphins' legacy as the franchise enters its 40th season.

Said Shula: "Green Bay is pretty proud of [its] history. The Bears are proud of their history. The Giants are proud of their history.

"We have more to be proud of than any of them. And Nick Saban, I think, has embraced that."

Free-agent safety Lance Schulters had what his agent described as a "productive" visit.

"He was impressed with what the Dolphins are planning to do on defense," agent Brian Levy said.

Schulters, released last week by Tennessee, is expected to make more free-agent visits in weighing his options for the 2005 season.

The Dolphins also met with Southern California defensive tackle Manuel Wright, who is entered in the NFL's supplemental draft July 14.

2005 Training Camp

Dolphins Press Releases

Are you ready for the summer? The Dolphins will answer that question on Monday, July 25 when the team holds its first training camp practice of 2005, under first-year head coach Nick Saban.

Players will report on July 24, as the team commences its 40th anniversary season in 2005. All but one practice will be held at the team’s Nova Southeastern University training facility in Davie, Fla. An August 5 session starting at 7:00 p.m. will be held at Dolphins Stadium as part of a Fan Appreciation Night. Gates for that event will open at 6:00 p.m.

Admission and parking are FREE at all Dolphins practices. The last open practice for the general public is on Wednesday, August 24, when the team officially breaks camp. In all, the team will conduct 34 practices which are open to Dol-fans, ten of which are at night. Each of the night practices caps off a two-a-day workout.

Seating at the team's facility will be available for the first 2,000 fans in the bleachers, located on the west side of the practice facility. All fans attending Camp Dolphins 2005 should park at the Nova Southeastern University Medical School parking garage, located off of University Drive, just south of the intersection of S.W. 30th Street. ACCESS TO THIS GARAGE IS FROM UNIVERSITY DRIVE ONLY.

"We're looking forward to having our fans come out and support us as we prepare for the 2005 season," said Dolphins Head Coach Nick Saban. "We hope that they will be enthusiastic at our practice sessions and carry that over to our home games at Dolphins Stadium this year. The number of night practices that we’ve scheduled not only will help our team stay fresh, but it also will give our fans additional opportunities to attend our practices."

Ricky Williams returns to South Florida

2005-06-23 | Weblog
Palm Beach Post

Ricky Williams is closer to rejoining the Dolphins — about 25 miles, actually.

Williams returned to South Florida on Tuesday and has taken up residence in Miami Beach, a league source said.

Williams had been living in northern California and traveling abroad since he abruptly retired last July.

Williams can now reenter the NFL's substance abuse program. Williams is subject to 10 random drug tests, and a failed or skipped drug test would trigger a one-year suspension because he previously failed three drug tests.

Williams will also begin the process of readying his body for the NFL season. He was down to 195 pounds — some 40 pound less than his playing weight — but Williams has hired a trainer and nutrionist to get his body ready for training camp.

Williams isn't allowed at the team's Davie training facility until his one-year retirement is over. Leigh Steinberg, Williams' agent, contends his client should be able to return July 23rd — the day he told former coach Dave Wannsted he was retiring. But the NFL believes Williams can't return until July 27, the date he failed to report to Dolphins' training camp.

The issue could go before an arbitrator if the two sides can't agree on the date.

“Unsung Hero” Award

2005-06-21 | Weblog
Dolphins Press Releases

The Miami Dolphins Alumni Association invites all Dol-Fans to participate in the selection of the second annual Alumni “Unsung Hero” Award to be presented at the Miami Dolphins vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers preseason game on Saturday, August 27 at Dolphins Stadium.

The Miami Dolphins Alumni Association recognizes that a team consists of three equal parts: offense, defense and special teams. The Dolphins have had a tremendous tradition of strong, competitive football teams. While the stars have received their accolades, many players have sacrificed for the franchise. The goal is, through the Alumni Association, to honor our unsung heroes.

This year, the Alumni Association is spotlighting Dolphins players who played between 1980 and 1989. Fans may use the following criteria to assist them in their decision:

• Minimum of three (3) years of service
• Does not have to be a starter
• Can not be a Pro Bowl player
• The impact made to his team during his career with the Miami Dolphins

Dol-Fans will have the opportunity to select the three finalists from the field based upon the highest amount of votes. Once selected, Dol-Fans will again have the opportunity to participate in the selection of the winner in conjunction with the Miami Dolphins Alumni Association.

Former Dolphins Quarterback Earl Morrall was selected as the winner of last year's “Unsung Hero” Award. Other finalists included former running back and tight ends coach Bernie Parmalee and former linebacker Earnie Rhone.

FROM THE ARCHIVES: Dolphins draft history

Sun Sentinel
1986: Dolphins happy with 52 pickup
Two plays. Two tremendous hits. That`s what it took to convince coach Don Shula that Western Michigan inside linebacker John Offerdahl could make an immediate difference in the Dolphins` porous defense.

Fourth and one. The South had the ball in the first half of January`s Senior Bowl. Heisman Trophy winner Bo Jackson took the handoff. Just as he was about to leap, Offerdahl met him head on. No gain.

Fourth and goal from the 1-yard line a few minutes later. Jackson took the handoff again. This time he got off the ground. Offerdahl found him in midair. No gain. No doubt about it. Offerdahl was chosen the game`s defensive MVP.

``The kid took Jackson on with a vengeance,`` Shula said. ``I liked that.``

Liked it so much he made Offerdahl Miami`s first pick, the 52nd overall, in Tuesday`s NFL draft.

No debate was necessary. Shula and his coaching staff watched that Senior Bowl film one more time early Tuesday morning. They never thought Offerdahl (6 feet 2, 232 pounds) would be around when Miami`s number was called. Defensive coach Chuck Studley was so sure of that he put a pizza on it with Director of Player Personnel Chuck Connor. Extra cheese, please.

``Don told us to give up hoping (Offerdahl would be available),`` Studley said. ``When he was still there, it took us about 15 seconds to decide. We went around the table and everyone agreed.

``We needed somebody who is intelligent enough to make the defensive calls and handle the people up front. We needed an A.J. Duhe type of guy back on our defense. I think Offerdahl can be that guy.``

Strong words for the 52nd pick in a weak draft. But the Dolphins believe they got themselves a big-time steal.

Smart? Offerdahl is a pre-med major. Productive? He`s the leading tackler in Mid-American Conference history. Consistent? Only once in his four years did he fail to get at least 10 tackles in a game.

When the top defensive linemen were gobbled up in the first round and early in the second, Offerdahl rose to the top of Miami`s most wanted list. There was concern until just before the Dolphins picked at 2:10 p.m., more than six hours after the draft began.

The New York Giants, picking 51st, needed an inside linebacker. When the Giants took Ohio State`s Pepper Johnson, Shula wore the look of a man who had just gotten the Christmas present he thought his wife could never afford.

``We haven`t been happy with the play of our inside linebackers over the last couple of years,`` Shula said. ``We feel like we got the player who can come in and upgrade us right away. He`s a hitter, and we need more of those.``

The Dolphins aren`t nearly as certain about the rest of their draft. They stayed defensive in the third round, taking Houston lineman T.J. Turner, unstoppable as a junior, invisible as a senior. Next they turned to offense to take Cal-Fullerton wide receiver James Pruitt, a player who with no modesty calls himself ``the prototype of a big wide receiver.``

Back to defense as the Dolphins selected Arkansas cornerback Kevin Wyatt in the fifth round, Alabama defensive end Brent Sowell in the sixth and Ohio State linebacker Larry Kolic in the seventh.

But this was clearly Offerdahl`s show. The Dolphins feel he will challenge incumbents Jackie Shipp, Jay Brophy and Mark Brown for a starting inside job. In particular, they look for him to improve a rushing defense ranked 23rd out of 28 teams a year ago. So what if he spent four years playing a weak Division I schedule.

``He sure looked like he belonged in the Senior Bowl,`` Shula said.

Offerdahl, 21, is a classic overachiever.

``I`ve always been knocked about my speed, then I worked with the track coach and got my 40 time down from 4.85 to 4.72,`` he said. ``I`ve always been knocked about my weight, then I went out and gained 40 pounds. I`ve always been knocked about my strength, then I improved my bench press from 225 to 375.

``My job was to prove that I could play with the big guys. I feel I`ve done that and now I`m ready for the next step.``
Those who have followed Offerdahl are convinced he will be successful.

Western Michigan coach Jack Harbaugh calls him ``the greatest player I`ve ever coached`` and adds, ``he makes every player on the field 10 percent better.``

When Offerdahl was one vote shy of being a unanimous All-MAC selection as a junior, then Bowling Green coach Denny Stolz stood up at a coaches meeting and told his peers, ``I can`t believe one of you didn`t vote for this kid. It`s a disgrace.``

The following year Offerdahl was a unanimous choice.

The pride of Sun Prairie, Wis., Offerdahl was an all-state basketball player, the pitcher on a state championship baseball team and an All-Wisconsin middle linebacker. If only he weighed more than 185 pounds, the major colleges would have called. Instead, he was banished to the solitude of Kalamazoo, Mich.

``I don`t have any regrets,`` said Offerdahl. ``I`m looking forward to helping the Dolphins.``

But before that happens, there is a contract to sign. Cleveland-based Pete Johnson is his agent. He doesn`t anticipate any problems. Then again, Johnson represents Miami wide receiver Nat Moore and his 1985 negotiations dragged on for months before an agreement was reached.

``I`m very optimistic,`` Johnson said Tuesday. ``The fact that he was the Dolphins` first pick should increase his value. I`m not sure they`ll look at it that way. But the Dolphins got themselves a great player. They`re very fortunate to have gotten him so late in the second round.``

Swim With The Dolphins At Miami Seaquarium

2005-06-19 | Weblog
Dolphins Press Releases

Miami Dolphins defenders Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas, along with a group of Jason Taylor Foundation supporters, participated in Miami Seaquarium's "Swim with our dolphins program".

Miami Seaquarium donated the swim to the Jason Taylor Foundation for last April's Jason Taylor Celebrity Golf Classic, at which more than $200,000 was raised for children’s charities in South Florida. Delray Beach resident John Duffy won the opportunity to "Swim with the dolphins…and the Dolphins" at the event's live auction and brought his daughter Emily and several of her friends along for the fun.

After a brief training session with Seaquarium staff, Taylor, Thomas and the rest of the group slipped into wetsuits and were treated to an up-close interaction that included petting, feeding and "shaking hands" with the dolphins before they enjoyed thrilling "rides" with the assistance of these magnificent marine mammals.

"I was amazed at how powerful, graceful and athletic the dolphins were,” said Jason Taylor, founder of the Jason Taylor Foundation. "The entire experience was just incredible and what made it even better was that this was the result of helping out children in our community."

The Jason Taylor Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to support and create programs that facilitate the personal growth and empowerment of South Florida’s children in need by focusing on improved health care, education and quality of life.

Miami Seaquarium, South Florida's most popular tourist attraction, is a family-oriented marine life park open to the public 365 days a year. The park is an accredited member of the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums, an international organization committed to the care and conservation of marine mammals.
