Issues in Japan (International affairs): Putin's distrust of the U.S

2022-02-21 | Issues in Japan

The topic this time is:
The source of Putin's distrust of the U.S.: His patience ran out 15 years ago.

I would like to tentatively share the contents of the article of Nihon Keizai Shimbun newspaper dated on February 18, 2022.

The situation in Ukraine continues to be tense.

The leaders of the United States, France, and Germany held a series of telephone and face-to-face talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but the rift was not bridged.

The annual Munich Security Conference will be held in Germany from February 18 to 20, and an emergency meeting of the foreign ministers of the Group of Seven (G7) countries will be held there in conjunction with the conference.

Will they be able to find a way to ease tensions?

The Munich Security Conference began in 1962, during the Cold War.

It is a traditional international meeting in the field of security and is attended by many world leaders and cabinet-level dignitaries every year.

In recent years, the scale of the meeting has been reduced due to the new coronavirus, but last year, U.S. President Biden participated online.

This year, U.S. Vice President Harris, German Chancellor Scholz, U.N. Secretary-General Guterres, and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Secretary-General Stoltenberg will participate.

Ukrainian President Zelensky is also scheduled to attend.

The biggest topic of discussion will probably be how to deal with the ongoing military tensions in Ukraine.

★Two aims at military tensions.

Russia has deployed a large military force in the border region with Ukraine, and the U.S. is on heightened alert for the possibility that Russian troops may invade soon.

The Putin administration has two aims in raising military tensions to that level.
