『日本書紀』推古天皇 8
十二月戊辰朔壬申、始行冠位。大德・小德・大仁・小仁・大禮・小禮・大信・小信・大義・小義・大智・小智、幷十二階。並以當色絁縫之、頂撮總如囊而着緣焉。唯、元日着髻花。髻花、此云于孺。
十二年春正月戊戌朔、始賜冠位於諸臣、各有差。
≪英訳≫
On the fifth day of the twelfth month (戊辰朔壬申), the Twelve Ranks of Cap were first introduced. These ranks were as follows:
• Great Virtue (大徳, Daitoku)
• Lesser Virtue (小徳, Shōtoku)
• Great Humanity (大仁, Dainin)
• Lesser Humanity (小仁, Shōnin)
• Great Propriety (大礼, Dairai)
• Lesser Propriety (小礼, Shōrai)
• Great Trust (大信, Daishin)
• Lesser Trust (小信, Shōshin)
• Great Righteousness (大義, Daigi)
• Lesser Righteousness (小義, Shōgi)
• Great Wisdom (大智, Daichi)
• Lesser Wisdom (小智, Shōchi)
These twelve ranks were distinguished by different colors of kinu (絁), a coarse silk fabric, sewn onto the caps. The hair was gathered at the crown, tied up, and wrapped in a pouch-like covering with decorative edges. On New Year’s Day (元日), a special floral hair ornament called uzura (髻花) was worn. (Uzura can be translated as a “hair flower.”)
In the twelfth year, on the first day of the first month (戊戌朔), the caps representing these ranks were first conferred upon the officials, each according to their assigned rank.
≪この英文の和訳≫
十二月五日（戊辰朔壬申）、はじめて十二階の冠位を制定された。これらの位は以下の通りである。
• 大徳（だいとく）
• 小徳（しょうとく）
• 大仁（だいにん）
• 小仁（しょうにん）
• 大礼（だいらい）
• 小礼（しょうらい）
• 大信（だいしん）
• 小信（しょうしん）
• 大義（だいぎ）
• 小義（しょうぎ）
• 大智（だいち）
• 小智（しょうち）
これら十二の階級は、それぞれ決まった色の絁（きぬ 目の粗いつむぎ）を縫いつけて区別した。また、髪は頂（いただき）にまとめて結び、袋のように包んで縁飾りを施した。元日には特別に髻花（うず 髪飾り）を挿した。この「髻花」とは、花飾りのことである。
十二年の春、正月一日（戊戌朔）に、はじめて冠位が諸臣に賜（たまわ）り、それぞれの地位に応じて授けられた。
