卅年春正月己未朔甲子、天皇詔五十瓊敷命・大足彥尊曰「汝等、各言情願之物也。」兄王諮「欲得弓矢。」弟王諮「欲得皇位。」於是、天皇詔之曰「各宜隨情。」則弓矢賜五十瓊敷命、仍詔大足彥尊曰「汝必繼朕位。」
卅二年秋七月甲戌朔己卯、皇后日葉酢媛命一云、日葉酢根命也薨。臨葬有日焉、天皇詔群卿曰「從死之道、前知不可。今此行之葬、奈之爲何。」於是、野見宿禰進曰「夫君王陵墓、埋立生人、是不良也、豈得傳後葉乎。願今將議便事而奏之。

30th Year, Spring, First Month, on the sixth day of January, the Emperor decreed to Itsuse no Mikoto and Ōtarashi no Mikoto, saying, "Each of you should express what you desire." The elder prince wished for a bow and arrows, and the younger prince desired the imperial throne. The Emperor then decreed, “Each may have what he wishes for." Hence, a bow and arrows were bestowed upon Itsuse no Mikoto, and Ōtarashi no Mikoto was proclaimed to be the Emperor’s successor.
32nd Year, Autumn, Seventh Month, on the sixth day of July, the Empress Hibasu Hime no Mikoto passed away. There were still days left for the burial, the Emperor decreed to his ministers, ‘We have previously understood that following the dead in death is not good. What shall we do about this burial?’ Nomino Sukune then came forward and said, “Burying living people with the royal tombs of kings and emperors is not good. How can this be passed down to future generations? Please allow me to consider a proper way to handle this and report back."

三十年の春、一月六日に、天皇は五十瓊敷命(いつせのみこと)と大足彦尊(おおたらしのみこと)に詔(みことのり)を下し、「それぞれに欲しいものを言ってみなさい」と仰せられました。兄の王は、「弓矢が欲しいです」と申し上げました。弟の王は、「天皇の位が欲しいです」と申し上げました。そこで、天皇は「それぞれの願いのままにしよう」と詔を下されました。弓矢を五十瓊敷命に賜り、大足彦尊には「そなたは必ず我が位を継げ」と仰せられました。
三十二年の秋、七月六日に、皇后である日葉酢媛命(ひばすひめのみこと)が薨去されました。葬るのにはまだ日がありました。天皇は＊群卿たちに詔を下し、「殉死が良くないことは前に分かっている。今度の葬はどうしようか」と仰せられました。野見宿禰(のみのすくね)が進んで申し上げました、「君王の陵墓に、生きている人を埋めるのは良くありません。どうして後世に伝えられましょうか。どうか今、適切な方法を考えて奏上させてください」。
