『日本書紀』敏達天皇 17
十四年春二月戊子朔壬寅、蘇我大臣馬子宿禰、起塔於大野丘北、大會設齋。卽以達等前所獲舍利、藏塔柱頭。辛亥、蘇我大臣患疾。問於卜者、卜者對言「祟於父時所祭佛神之心也。」大臣卽遣子弟、奏其占狀。詔曰「宜依卜者之言、祭祠父神。」大臣奉詔、禮拜石像、乞延壽命。是時、國行疫疾、民死者衆。
三月丁巳朔、物部弓削守屋大連與中臣勝海大夫、奏曰「何故不肯用臣言。自考天皇及於陛下、疫疾流行、國民可絶。豈非專由蘇我臣之興行佛法歟。」詔曰「灼然、宜斷佛法。」丙戌、物部弓削守屋大連自詣於寺、踞坐胡床、斫倒其塔、縱火燔之、幷燒佛像與佛殿。既而取所燒餘佛像、令棄難波堀江。
是日、無雲風雨。大連、被雨衣、訶責馬子宿禰與從行法侶、令生毀辱之心。乃遣佐伯造御室更名、於閭礙、喚馬子宿禰所供善信等尼。由是、馬子宿禰、不敢違命、惻愴啼泣、喚出尼等、付於御室。有司、便奪尼等三衣、禁錮、楚撻海石榴市亭。
≪英訳≫
In the 14th year, spring, on the 15th day of the second month, Soga no Oomi Umako no Sukune (蘇我大臣馬子宿禰) built a stupa to the north of Ōno Hill (大野丘) and held a Buddhist memorial ceremony. The relics (shari, 舎利) previously acquired by the senior monk (Tatsuto達等) were enshrined beneath the central pillar of the stupa.
On the 24th day, Soga no Oomi (蘇我大臣) fell ill. When diviners (urabe卜者) were consulted, they said, “It is the retribution of the Buddha whom your father once worshipped.”
Soga no Oomi sent his sons and retainers to report this omen, as revealed by cracks in the divination shells. The emperor (Mikado帝) decreed,“Follow the diviner’s words and worship the Buddha that your father venerated.”
Following the imperial order, the minister worshipped the stone Buddha image, praying for an extension of his life. During this time, an epidemic spread throughout the land, and many people perished.
On the first day of the third month, Mononobe no Yuge no Moriya no Ōmuraji (物部弓削守屋大連) and Nakatomi no Katsumi no Maetsukimi (中臣勝海大夫) reported to the court:
“Why do you not heed our words? Since the reign of Emperor Kinmei (欽明天皇) to the present, epidemics have spread, and the people are dying in great numbers. This is undoubtedly due to the Soga clan’s (蘇我氏) propagation of Buddhism.”
The emperor issued an edict (mikotonori詔), saying:
“This is clear. Immediately abolish Buddhism.”
On the 30th day, Mononobe no Yuge no Moriya no Ōmuraji personally went to the temple, sat cross-legged on a campstool, and ordered the stupa to be toppled and burned. The Buddhist images and the temple itself were also set aflame. The remaining images were collected and thrown into the Horie Canal (堀江) in Naniwa (難波).
That day, although the sky was clear, wind blew, and rain fell. The Ōmuraji donned a raincoat and accused Soga no Umako no Sukune (馬子宿禰) and the monks accompanying him of causing people to harbor contempt toward the authorities. Saeki no Miyatsuko no Mimuro (佐伯造御室) was sent to summon Zenshin-ni (善信尼), a nun who served under Umako no Sukune.
Soga no Umako no Sukune, though deeply anguished, did not defy the command. With bitter lamentations and tears, he handed the nuns over to Mimuro. Officials immediately stripped the nuns of their monastic robes, arrested them, and confined them to the Umaya Mansion (馬屋館) in Tsubakichi (海石榴市). There, they were flogged on their backs and shoulders as punishment.
≪この英文の和訳≫
(在位)十四年の春、二月十五日、蘇我大臣馬子宿禰（そがのおおおみうまこのすくね）は大野丘（おおののおか）の北に塔を建て、仏教の法会を設けて供養を行った。このとき、達等（たつと）が以前に手に入れた舎利（しゃり）を、塔の心柱の下に納めた。
二月二十四日、蘇我大臣は病に倒れた。卜者（うらべ）に占わせたところ、卜者は次のように告げた。
「これは、あなたの父君がかつて崇めた仏の祟りによるものです」。
大臣は子弟を派遣し、その占いによって示された亀裂の形を天皇に奏上した。天皇は「卜者の言葉に従い、父君が崇めた仏を供養するように」
と仰せになった。
そこで、大臣は勅命に従い、石仏を礼拝し、自らの寿命が延びることを祈った。この頃、国内では疫病が流行し、多くの民が命を落としていた。
三月一日、物部弓削守屋大連（もののべのゆげのもりやのおおむらじ）と中臣勝海大夫（なかとみのかつみのまえつきみ）が天皇に奏上して次のように申し上げた。「なぜ私どもの申し上げたことをお取り上げにならないのでしょうか。欽明天皇の御代から陛下の御代に至るまで、疫病が絶えず流行し、国民が命を落としております。その原因はひとえに蘇我氏が仏教を広めたことにあると存じます」。
天皇は詔（みことのり）を発し、
「それは明らかである。ただちに仏教を廃止せよ」と仰せになった。
三月三十日、物部弓削守屋大連は自ら寺に赴き、床几にあぐらをかいて座り、塔を切り倒させ、火を放って焼いた。同時に、仏像や仏殿も焼き払った。焼け残った仏像は集められ、難波（なにわ）の堀江（ほりえ）に捨てられた。この日、晴れているにもかかわらず風が吹き、雨が降った。大連は雨衣を着用し、蘇我馬子宿禰（うまこのすくね）や彼に従う僧侶を非難し、人々に侮りの心を抱かせるようにした。
さらに、佐伯造御室（さえきのみやつこのみむろ）を派遣し、蘇我馬子宿禰が供養を行っていた善信尼（ぜんしんのあま）を召し出させた。蘇我馬子宿禰は命令に抗うことなく、ひどく嘆き悲しみながら尼たちを引き渡し、御室（みむろ）に託した。役人たちは直ちに尼たちの法衣を奪い、彼女たちを縛り上げて海石榴市（つばきち）の馬屋館（うまやたち）に拘束し、背や肩を鞭打つ刑に処した。
