Sharapova Cruises Into Last 16

Two days after fighting off two match points to win her second round match, Maria Sharapova needed just 61 minutes to cruise past a WTA Rising Star in the third round.

MELBOURNE, Australia - Two days after surviving an absolute epic in her second round match, Maria Sharapova was all business in her third round match at the Australian Open, cruising past WTA Rising Star Zarina Diyas in just 61 minutes under the lights of Rod Laver Arena on Friday evening.

On Wednesday, Sharapova barely scraped by unheralded Russian qualifier Alexandra Panova, fighting off two match points down 5-4 in the third set and ultimately prevailing, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5. This time there was no drama whatsoever though, as the No.2-seeded Russian cruised past the No.31-seeded Diyas, 6-1, 6-1, finishing the match with her 22nd winner of the match - a powerful ace up the middle.

Sharapova was asked about the impressive turnaround from her second round match.

"I think I rebounded well," Sharapova said. "I had a good hit yesterday. I thought about what I wanted to try to achieve tonight, no matter who I played. I focused on myself more than anything else. Just tried to be a bit more aggressive and concentrate - I thought I did a good job of focusing well.

"She can be a tough, tough player to play against if you give her the time to change down the line like she likes to do, stepping down and hitting flat and low. If you give her the time, she'll do it."

Awaiting Sharapova in the fourth round is No.21 seed Peng Shuai, who won a tight first set against another Kazakhstani, Yaroslava Shvedova, before rolling to victory in the second set, 7-6(7), 6-3.

"We've always had good matches," Sharapova said. "She's had great success in the last few Slams. She's a bit of an untraditional player with two hands on both sides - that's a little tricky - but I enjoy playing against her. She hits the ball quite flat as well, and deep. So I just have to be ready for those shots to always come back like that. And I'm looking forward to another good match-up."

Sharapova leads Peng in their head-to-head, 4-1, Peng's lone win coming at Beijing back in 2009, when Sharapova was still working her way back up the rankings after her 2008 shoulder surgery.

Other favorites joining Sharapova in the second week were No.3 seed Simona Halep, who held off a late surge from Bethanie Mattek-Sands (read more here), No.7 seed Eugenie Bouchard, who found a mid-match burst of energy and ran away with it against a WTA Rising Star (read more here) and No.10 seed Ekaterina Makarova, who set up a fourth round clash with Julia Goerges (read more here).

The third round wraps up on Saturday as the top half battles it out for the second week.
