この事件は145年前の1878年のこと。イングランド銀行は2015年に同行の季刊誌で改めてこの事件を取り上げ、その重要性を議論した。この事件の歴史的意義は、株式銀行の世界で、なお株主の無限責任が主流であったのが、有限責任に転換を進める転機になった点にあるが、最大規模行の破綻であること、帳簿の粉飾が背後の問題であったことなどから、今日の銀行破たんとなお比較検証される事例であることが頻繁に指摘されている。
この2015年のイングランド銀行の記事前後から、この倒産事件は再び、人々の関心を強く集めている。
私がこの倒産劇について、論文を書いたのは実に40年以上前のことになったが、日本ではこの倒産についての理解は、現在も進んでいない。しかし銀行史そして金融恐慌史の両面において、記憶されてよい事件だと考えられる。

この倒産は事件発生当時、イギリス金融史で最重要の事件と言われた。私の意見では、無限責任株式銀行というものの終焉を告げたことと、会計監査の重要性を示した意義が大きい。そのため会計史の研究ではよく取り上げられる事件である。私の1982年発表の論文はグラスゴー銀行の財務諸表をどう扱うかという点で問題がある。私は元の帳簿を加工した形で論文に掲載した。私の論文から7年後 友岡賛さんの論文が現れた。友岡論文では、会計の帳簿を加工せずにそのまま載せている。そのとき歴史的資料の扱いとして、その方が正しいと反省した。以下の1989年の友岡論文と私の旧稿を比較検討されたい。友岡92年論文は、グラスゴーで滞在中にまとめられたもののようだ。
