BEISCom launches full inquiry into Thomas Cook collapse

英国議会のBEIS（事業・エネルギー・産業戦略）委員会が、トーマス・クックの破綻について、全面的な調査を開始するという記事。

The Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) Committee has launched a full-scale inquiry into the collapse of travel company Thomas Cook, which went into liquidation on Monday

同社の幹部や役員報酬について精査するそうです。

MPs will scrutinise the leadership of the company, and its executives’ remuneration – which has repeatedly come under fire since Thomas Cook folded.

監査人の果たした役割や、会社の会計実務についても調査します。過去2年間はEYが監査人でしたが、その前はPwCでした。

The committee will also investigate the role of auditors, and accounting practices at the company. EY, which audited Thomas Cook for the last two years, was preceded by PwC.

委員長である議員のコメントより。今回の企業破綻は、またしても、会社役員への法外な報酬を助長するような会計手法の使用と、株主や投資家や公衆の幅広い利益のために、そのような慣行を抑制すべきはずの、監査人や監督当局の明らかな無能さに光を当てている、と手厳しいことを述べています。

“This latest corporate failure,” Reeves said, “has shone a light once again on the use of aggressive accounting methods to aid bumper pay-outs to company executives and the apparent inability of auditors and regulators to curb these practices in the wider interest of shareholders, investors, and the public.”

世界中に取り残された同社の利用者を救済するためにかなりの公費を費やすようですから、厳しいこともいいたくなるのでしょう。

FRC considers Thomas Cook probe（economia）

The travel operator is audited by EY, which took over from fellow Big Four firm PwC in 2017.

Audit watchdog the FRC announced "in light of recent developments at Thomas Cook we are considering whether there is any case for investigation and enforcement action as a matter of urgency and in cooperation with the Insolvency Service”.
