米国の奴隷制度の「始まり」に目を向けたコラム記事。
スプレッドシート、労働生産性、減価償却などの始まりでもあるそうです。
「今年の８月にはもうひとつ、大方のアメリカ人に忘れられた「始まり」の日があった。西アフリカでスペイン商船に拉致され、危険極まりない渡海をわずかに生き残った二十数名のアフリカ住民が、奴隷として初めてアメリカの港に到着し身柄を売られたのがちょうど４００年前だった。米国の教科書に必ず載る英国のピルグリムたちがメイフラワー号で北米に到着する１年３カ月前のことである。
昨年刊行された経営史家ケートリン・ローゼンサルの「Ａｃｃｏｕｎｔｉｎｇ ｆｏｒ Ｓｌａｖｅｒｙ」（奴隷制の会計学、ハーバード大学出版会、未邦訳）によると、今日世界中の会計士が数値データを集計・分析するために使う「スプレッドシート」は、奴隷労働を管理する木綿農園で定着した簿記技術に基づくという。
労働生産性を測る集計方法も、農園で打ち出されたイノベーションの一つ。資本でもある黒人奴隷の身体は価値基準となった。減価償却法は奴隷を１８世紀以降の世界金融市場へ債権として拠出するために完成させたスキームであると著者は説く。
多国籍企業の重層的な組織部門形態も、１９世紀の工業化に先立ち、膨大な農園会計資料に見いだせるという。」
耐用年数のことを「Useful Life」といいますが、「Life」（命、生涯、一生．．．）という言葉が使われているのも、奴隷のイメージなのでしょうか。
農業といっても、日本のような家族経営ではなく、大勢の奴隷を使うプランテーション経営で規模も大きく、また、交易のための生産活動ですから、近代的な経営の面もあったのでしょう。
