Offer the scholarship 島の奨学生

The chief of Sadam village and teachers of Sadam secondary school concerned one student.
He is too poor to continue studying in the school. But he wants to learn.
So, I decided to support him.
サダム村の村長やサダム島中学校の先生達は一人の生徒を心配していました。
彼は家が貧しいために学校に通うのが困難な状況の中、勉強を続けたいと思っていました。
そこで、私は彼を支援することにしました。

I met his parents with the chief and teachers. I also visited to his home.
I offered him a bicycle, student uniform, shoes and bag to go to school.
村長と先生達と共に彼の両親に会いました。彼の家庭も訪問しました。
そして、通学用の自転車、学生服、学生カバン、靴を提供しました。
It was a kind of scholarship.
I’m keeping watch over him fondly until his graduation.
一種の奨学金のようなものです。
彼が無事卒業するまで暖かく見守っていくつもりです。

The children went to the Dolphin Watching 島の子供達、カワイルカを見に行く

One day,
I asked the children in Khone Island,
“Have you seen the dolphin?”

They said “ Nyan !” It means “Not yet.” in Lao.

ある時、コーン島の子供達に訊いてみた。「ねえ、カワイルカ見たことある？」
「ニャン！」（まだ見たことないよー）

There is River Dolphin [Irrawaddy dolphin] habitat in the lower of the stream on this island.
There is well known as the dolphin watching site. Many foreigners visit the island to do.

この島の下流にはカワイルカ（正式にはカワゴンドウ）が生息していて、海外から大勢の観光客がイルカウオッチングに訪れています。

That dolphins are designated one of the critically endangered species by IUCN.
I wanted to show the dolphin to children.
I hope the children love the dolphin.
I thoght it will be important to save the dolphin in the future.

そのカワイルカは絶滅の危険性が非常に高いといわれています。
私は子供達にイルカを見せたいと思いました。そしてイルカを好きになってほしい。
今後、このイルカを保護していくためには地元の子供達がイルカを愛することが必要だと私は思ったのです。

Then, I chartered a truck and put the children on it.
そこで観光用トラックを一台チャーターして、子供達を乗っけて、


We went to the port and got on the boats.
島の南端の小さな港へ行き、イルカウオッチングのボートに乗り込みました。


When the children found the dolphins, they shouted excitedly “Le! Le! Le! [Over there!]”
They really enjoyed the watching.
川の中にイルカを見つけた子供達は、「レ！レ！レ！」（あそこ！あそこ！あそこ！）と大はしゃぎ！

After coming back from that happy excursion, they drew the pictures of dolphins.
楽しい遠足から帰ってきた子供達はイルカの絵を描きました。

10. The exhibition of photographs for Sadam secondary school ラオス写真展の開催

The café owner Haru has a gallery in our town.
She asked me to have the exhibition of photographs for Sadam secondary school in her gallery.
I thought that was a good chance to inform the details of the school situation and our activity to both our donors and people who don't know this issue yet.
My partner helped me to provide some photos he took on the islands.
カフェコーバの春さんはこの町のギャラリーのオーナーでもあります。
彼女からギャラリーでサダム中学校のために「ラオスの写真展」をやってみては？と提案されました。
私は、これまでこの学校を支援してくれた人たちに活動報告すると共に、
この学校のことを知らない人たちにも解ってもらうよい機会だと考え、この嬉しい提案をお受けしました。
私のパートナー（主人）も写真を何枚か提供してくれることになりました。

We held the exhibition titled “Little eyes in Laos –Children live on Four Thousand Islands” on November 2014.
２０１４年１１月に写真展「ラオスのひとみ」を開催しました。


We displayed 40 photos and a few commentary panels.
４０枚余りの写真と数枚の解説パネルを展示しました。


4 kinds of town news-sheets introduced the exhibition.
Nation wades newspaper Mainichi-Shinbun and regional newspaper Kanagawa-Shinbun and CATV reported the exhibition and our activity.
タウン紙４社が情報コーナーに「写真展」のお知らせを掲載してくれて、毎日新聞と神奈川新聞が取材記事を書いてくれました。
そしてケーブルテレビのＪ－ＣＯＭが写真展の様子を放送してくれました。


The result of that, we had over 200 visitors in 9days.
They offered to support the school after viewing the photos.
Sadam secondary school has many supporters.
おかげさまで、９日間の会期中に２００人以上の方が来廊されました。
写真を見たお客様はサダム島中学校への支援を申し出てくれました。
学校には多くの支援者ができました。

9. Extending classrooms of Sadam Secondary school 学校の増築

The opening of the school, 49 students start studying there in 2010.
It had only 1 class.

4 years past, over 70 students are learning in 4 classes.
Sadam Secondary school needs to extend classrooms.
開校当初たった１クラス、４９名だった全校生徒数は、４年たった今では４クラス７０名となり、
サダム島中学校は教室が足りなくなってしまいました。


My friend Haru is an owner of the Café near my house.
She offered me to set a collecting box in her café for Sadam Secondary school.
I wrote an appeal for contributions.
Then many regular guests of the café answered it.
私の家の近所にあるカフェは、店にサダム島中学校を支援する募金箱を置いて下さっています。
私の支援呼び掛けの文章も掲示してくれています。大勢の常連さんがそれに答えてくれました。


I visited to Sadam Island with Luesak on June 2014.
He helps me any time.
We had a meeting with village chiefs and education director of district and teachers.
I offered the funds from the cafe for extending classrooms.
２０１４年６月、私はいつも私を助けてくれるルイサック氏と共にサダム島へ行き、
村長、教育ディレクター、先生と会合を持ちました。そして教室の増築資金としてカフェの募金を手渡しましｔ。


It was built in time for the new school term in September.
Education director took its photo and Luesak sent me it by email.
その年の９月、新しい教室は完成しました。
教育ディレクターが写真を撮り、それをルイサック氏がメールで送ってくれました。

8. Dictionaries for Sadam Secondary School 中学校へ英語の辞書を提供

Spring in 2014,
My friend Keiko in Japan asked me “Why do you visit to Laos very often? “
I explained her my activities for Sadam Secondary school.
Then she offered me to contribute her money for the school.
It was the first time I had a donation.
２０１４年春。「なぜラオスに通っているの？」と友人に尋ねられ、
サダム島中学校のことを話しました。
すると彼女は「学校に役立てて」と言って、私にお金をくれました。
これが初めていただいた「義援金」でした。

Later, I visited to the school and discussed with teachers.
They told me that students don't have any English-Laotian dictionaries.
We decided to put the dictionaries, each classroom to every student can look up it.
その後、サダム島中学校を訪問し、先生方と話し合いました。
先生は生徒が一人も「英語の辞書」を持っていないという話でした。
そこでクラスに何冊づつか共同で使える辞書を設置することにしました。

Luesak helped me to look for good one.
His friend is working at the publishing company in Vientiane.
That company has published new dictionaries for students.
ルイサック氏は良い辞書を探すのを手伝ってくれました。
彼の友人が首都ビエンチャンで出版社におり、その会社がちょうど学生向けの英語辞書を出版したところでした。

We could buy 10 dictionaries by Keiko's donation.
友人のケイコのおかげで１０冊の辞書が購入できました。

7. Sporting goods for Sadam Secondary School 学校に体育用具

Autumn in 2013,
I provided sporting goods to Sadam Secondary School.
Football, Volleyball, Sepak Takraw and Badminton.
These tools will help their health and keep their motivation to go to school.
サダム島中学校に体育用具を提供しました。
サッカーボール、バレーボール、セパタクローのボール、バドミントン用具など。
これらの体育用具が遠い学校に通う楽しみになればと思います。

6. Water supply for the Sadam Secondary School 中学校へ水道設備の設置

In 2013, NGO in Thailand provided the pump to the Sadam Secondary School.
Teachers constructed the water pipe from Mekong river to the school by themselves.
I provided the water tank. Water supply for the school was completed.
Then student can wash their hands.
It is very important to prevent the infectious disease.
２０１３年　タイのＮＧＯがサダム島中学校に川の水を汲むポンプを提供してくてれました。
先生達はメコン川から学校までの長い距離を水道パイプを敷設してくれました。
私はその水を貯めておく貯水タンクを提供しました。水道設備の完成です！
生徒達は手を洗うことができます。これは感染症予防に大変重要です。

5. Supporting to the Secondary school of Sadam Island サダム島中学校を応援する

On January in 2011,
We visited in Sadam Island near Khon Island with Luesak and his friends.
The middle of the island, I saw a plain cabin in the wood.
It's made of bamboo and straw.
２０１１年１月　
友人のルイサックさんとその仲間とコーン島の隣のサダム島に遊びにいきました。
島の中央の森の中で、竹と藁でできた粗末な小屋を見かけました。


It was the secondary school newly built.
それが開校したばかりのサダム島中学校でした。

There are two villages on Sadam Island.
Each of the villages has primary school, but didn’t have a secondary school.
They want to have it, but they didn’t have enough budget to build it individually.
Then two villages decided to build it together in the middle of the island.
サダム島には二つの村があります。それぞれの村に小学校はありますが、中学校はありませんでした。
どちらの村も中学校がほしいと思っていましたが、どちらの村も単独で開校、運営する予算がありませんでした。
そこで二つの村は共同で中学校を作ることにしました。


It's a long way from each of the village to the school.
The school has no water supply, no lavatory, of course no electricity.
But, Young passionate teachers are teaching 49 students.
中学校は、それぞれの村から遠く離れた場所に建設されました。
水道も、トイレも、もちろん電気もありません。
しかし情熱を持った若い先生の元、両村の４９名の生徒が学んでいます。


Then I decided to help this school.
I asked the chief of these villages, “What can I do for the school?”
They hope to cover with a roof by zinc.
The reason why is that straw roof can’t protect torrential rain.
Then I provided zinc.
私はこの学校を応援しょうと決心しました。そして村長達に、「何かお手伝いできることはないか」と尋ねました。
彼らは、校舎の屋根を葺くトタン板を必要としていました。
なぜなら雨期の激しい雨で藁葺きの屋根が雨漏りしていたのです。私はトタン板を提供しました。

6 months later, It was completed.
６か月後。　屋根は完成しました！

4. Supporting to the primary school of Islands 島の小学校を応援する

On September in 2012,
Teacher of the primary school of the Hang Khon village on Khon Island asked me to provide the schoolbooks.
Hang Khon village didn’t have enough budget to buy those books for their school.
Then I bought the schoolbooks of Laotian language and Arithmetic and Socioenvironmental studies and notebooks and pens with my pocket money.
コーン島の下流側のハンコーン小学校の先生から相談がありました。
村の予算が十分に無く、教科書が購入できないとのこと。（教科書は個人ではなく村が購入する）
そこで、国語と算数と生活科の教科書をポケットマネーで買うことにしました。





My friend, Luesak helped me to buy those books.
He is the owner of the Sa La Don Khon Hotel [Sa La Phe] where we stay every time.
現地の友人、ルイサックさんが教科書を取り寄せるのを助けてくれました。
彼は私がいつも滞在する「サーラードンコーン・ホテル（サーラーペー）」のオーナーです。


I also provided same kinds of schoolbooks to the primary school of Hang Sadam village on the Sadam Island.
私はさらにサダム島の下流のハンサダム村の小学校にも同じように教科書を購入しました。

3. "Drawing event" for children 島の「お絵描き会」

Kids in the island don’t have any experience to draw pictures on drawing paper by coloring materials.
I carried these implements from Japan and ask children to draw together.
島の子供達は画用紙に絵を描いた経験がありません。
そこで、日本から画材を持参して、子供達に「いっしょに絵を描こう！」と誘ってみました。




I visited to the villages in Khon Island and Sadam Island for such drawing events.
私はコーン島やサダム島の村を訪れ、各地で「お絵かき会」を開きました。


They took these pictures to their houses and showed it their parents.
完成した絵。初めて水彩絵の具で描きました！

They also enjoyed making figures in clay and painted it.
紙粘土細工にも挑戦です。

2. “Reading event" for children 島の「読書会」

I have many friends now.
The first friends were kids around the hotel we are staying on Khon Island.
島に通うようになって今ではたくさんの友達ができましたが、
一番最初の友達は、子供達でした。



I played with them and found that they don't have any experience to read picture books.
There is no bookstore.
彼らは「絵本」を読んことがありません。島には本屋もありませんし、大人にも読書の習慣がないのです。
そこで私はラオス語で書かれた絵本３０冊を「ラオスのこども」という日本のＮＧＯから提供してもらい、日本から島に運びました。
私は島の子供達に「絵本をいっしょに読まない？」と声をかけました。
Then I got picture books written by Laotian published by Japanese NGO.
I carried 30 kinds of books from Japan.
I visited to the villages in the island with books and ask children to read it together.


They enjoyed it.
I held such reading event everywhere in the village.
彼らは絵本が気に入ったようです。わたしはこのような小さな「読書会」を島のあちこちで開きました。


They can read and enjoy the story with picture-cards now. [It's the "Kamisibai" in Japan]
子供達は今では「紙芝居」を楽しむこともできるようになりました。


I visited in Khon Tai village, Khon Nua and Hang Khon village on Khon island and also visited to Sahong Island and Sadam Island nearby Khon Island to hold the events.
It's just like a mobile library.
私はコーン島のコーンタイ村やコーンヌア、ハンコーン村や近くのサダム島を訪れ、移動図書館のような「読書会」を開いています。
It was the first experience for the almost children to read picture books.
ほとんどの子供にとって絵本を読むのは初めての経験です。

I'm Toshi a Japanese.
I live a small town near Tokyo.
I'm working as a trainer for muscles of facial expression.
私の名前はトシ。東京の近郊に住んでいます。
職業は表情筋トレーニングの講師です。

I like to travel and rivers.
Especially I like to visit to Laos.
They have Mekong River.
私は旅と川が大好きです。特にラオスに行くのが好きです。だってメコン川が流れているから。

The first, I visited in Laos with my partner in 2007.
He took the video there for the museum in Japan.
We had traveled only Vientiane and its environs at this time.
初めてパートナーと共にラオスを訪れたのは２００７年でした。
彼の仕事で、博物館のために映像を撮りに行ったのです。
この時、私達は首都ビエンチャンとその周辺に行っただけでした。


The second, We went to Luang Phabang located in the north on the same year.
It is ancient capital well known as the world heritage.
次の旅では、北部のルアンパバーンに行きました。世界遺産の古都です。

The third, We visited to Si-Pan-Don in the south area of this country in 2008.
“Si-Pan-Don” means “Four thousand Islands”.
There are many islands and waterfalls in the Mekong River.
２００８年、三回目の旅で、私達は南部のシーパンドン地方に行きました。
「シーパンドン」とは４千の島々という意味で、
この地方はメコン川の流れの中にたくさんの島と滝があります。


People live these islands cultivating rice and fishery.
この島々で人々は魚を捕り、お米を作って暮らしています。


We were staying Khon Island two weeks.
The location is beautiful and people are very charming.
I can look at Mekong river every day.
私はいつもコーン島に滞在しています。
景色は素晴らしく、人々はとてもチャーミングです。
そして一日中でもメコン川を眺めることができます。


We are visiting in this area 2 or 3 times every year since 2008.
We have many local friends now.
２００８年以来、年に２〜3度、この地方に通うことになりました。
今では、たくさん友達もできました。
