I read an article from Minatsuki-san's blog the other day.
It was about ひな人形, the dolls for the Japanese Girl's festival.
In her article, she introduced the groom and bride dolls painted on a paper scroll. It reminded me of my dolls. (see the picture above.) They are Origami dolls that my grandma gave me. She handed me right before I left Japan 2 years ago. I have kept them in a drawer and totally forgot that.
I promised Minatsuki-san that I will show the Origami dolls here.
Wha ... ?
Good God, they are not ひな人形!!
According to the description that came with the dolls, they are 七夕雛!The dolls for Japanese Star festival!!! It may not sound familiar to anyone that there are dolls for the festival but, this is some kind of local custom.
I didn't even know that!!!
ひな人形だとずっと思ってた、おばあちゃんの手作り雛。
実は、七夕用でした。。

But I'm wondering how come you thought they were hina-dolls? Hahahaha
BTW, which part of JP are the Tanabata-dolls decorated in?
My grandma likes not only doing origami but various handcrafts. She made another hina-dolls that are as small as you could do O-Tedama with.
Do you know the city Matsumoto, Nagano?
The description says that the Tanabata dolls are decorated on a bumboo tree by people in Matsumoto. I lived in Suwa, the city that is 4 cities away from Matsumoto, for almost my entire life. I have visited my grandma's many many times but I didn't know the custom..
I've been to Tateshina before to stay my mother's friend's villa, and I went through Suwa on the way. Lake Suwa was beautiful.
Please visit Suwa and Tateshina again in spring when you get a chance. You can see beautiful Nikkoukisuge, a kind of daffodils, driving along the road called Venus Line!
