Welcome to Issues in Japan.
The topic this time is: Self-Defense Forces "Cyber Defense Unit" newly reorganized and centralized to enhance readiness.
On March 17, the Ministry of Defense organized a new "Cyber Defense Unit" responsible for system protection from cyber attacks, and held a commander flag conferral ceremony at the Ministry of Defense.
The new unit, a joint force of the Ground, Maritime, and Air Self-Defense Forces, has been expanded to have 540 personnel, about 1.3 times the number of the previous unit.
With the risk of cyber-attacks increasing worldwide due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and other factors, the Ministry of Defense reportedly will aim to drastically strengthen its cyber-defense capabilities.
In the Ministry of Defense, the Defense Information and Communications Infrastructure (DII), a common network for the Self-Defense Forces, has been monitored 24 hours a day by the Command and Communications Systems Unit, and each Self-Defense Force has also deployed a protection unit in charge of DII.
