『日本書紀』崇峻天皇 6
河內國司、以萬死狀、牒上朝庭。朝庭下苻稱「斬之八段、散梟八國。」河內國司、卽依苻旨、臨斬梟時、雷鳴大雨。
爰有萬養白犬、俯仰𢌞吠於其屍側、遂嚙舉頭收置古冢、横臥枕側、飢死於前。河內國司、尤異其犬、牒上朝庭。朝庭哀不忍聽、下苻稱曰「此犬、世所希聞、可觀於後。須使萬族作墓而葬。」由是、萬族、雙起墓於有眞香邑葬萬與犬焉。河內國言「於餌香川原有被斬人、計將數百。頭身既爛、姓宇難知、但以衣色收取其身者。爰有櫻井田部連膽渟所養之犬、嚙續身頭伏側固守、使收己主乃起行之。」
≪英訳≫
The Governor of Kawachi Province (河内国司 Kawachi no Kuni no Mikotomochi) reported to the court about the last moments of Yorozu (萬). The court issued an edict stating, “Cut him into eight pieces and display them on stakes in eight provinces.” Following the court’s command, the Governor carried out the execution, but as Yorozu’s remains were being displayed, a thunderstorm broke out with loud thunder and heavy rain.
Yorozu had owned a white dog. This dog circled around Yorozu’s corpse and howled towards the heavens. Eventually, it carried Yorozu’s head to an ancient grave, where it laid down next to the head and eventually starved to death. Moved by the dog’s loyalty, the Governor of Kawachi reported the incident to the court. The court, struck with pity, issued another decree:
“This dog is remarkable and rare. It should serve as an example for future generations. Instruct Yorozu’s kin to build a grave and bury both Yorozu and the dog together.”
In response to this command, Yorozu’s relatives constructed two graves side by side in Arimaka Village (有真香邑 Arimaka no Mura) and buried Yorozu and the dog there together.
The Governor of Kawachi also reported another case:
“On the riverbank of Eka (餌香), hundreds of executed corpses lie scattered. Their bodies have rotted, and we can no longer identify them by name. We collect and bury them based on the colors of their clothing. However, there was a dog belonging to Sakurai no Tabe no Muraji Inu (桜井田部連胆淳 Sakurai no Tabe no Muraji Inu). This dog kept holding onto its master’s corpse, guarding it resolutely. It stayed there until its master was properly buried, only then leaving the spot.”
≪この英文の和訳≫
河内国司(かわちのくにのみこともち)は、萬(よろず)の最期の様子について朝廷に報告した。朝廷は次のような勅(みことのり)を下された。
「萬を八つに切り分け、八つの国に串刺しにしてさらせ。」
河内国司は勅命に従い処刑を執行したが、萬の遺骸がさらされる際、雷鳴が轟き、大雨が降り注いだ。
萬が飼っていた白犬が一匹いた。この犬は萬の遺骸の周囲をぐるぐる回り、天に向かって吠え続けた。そしてやがて萬の首をくわえ、古い墓に運んで収めた。その後、犬は首のそばに横たわり、ついには飢え死んでしまった。
河内国司はこの犬の行動を不思議に思い、調査の上で朝廷に報告した。これを聞かれた朝廷は大いに哀れに思し召し、次の布告を下された。
「この犬は世にも珍しい忠犬である。後世の鑑(かがみ)となるべき存在である。萬の親族に命じて墓を造らせ、萬と犬を共に葬らせよ」。
この勅命により、萬の親族は有真香邑(ありまかのむら)に二つの墓を並べて造り、萬と犬を共に葬ったのである。
また河内国司は、次のような報告も行った。「餌香(えか)の川原には処刑された人々の遺骸が散らばっており、その数は数百にのぼります。遺骸は既に腐敗しており、名を知ることもできません。ただ、衣服の色を手がかりにして遺骸を回収しております。その中で、桜井田部連胆淳(さくらいのたべのむらじ いぬ)が飼っていた犬がありました。この犬はその主人の遺骸をくわえて離さず、傍らに伏してしっかりと守り続けておりました。そして主人の遺骸が墓に収められると、初めてその場を離れたのです」。
＊萬(よろず)
捕鳥部 萬（ととりべのよろず）は、飛鳥時代の武人であり、物部守屋の資人として知られています。彼は587年の丁未の乱で物部方に属し、守屋の邸宅を守備しましたが、蘇我馬子方に守屋が討たれた後に逃亡しました。最終的に敵に追い詰められ、自害しました。彼の死後、その忠犬が彼の頭を古い墓に収めたという伝説があり、これが後に天神山古墳として知られるようになりました。〔Perplexyの解説〕
