『古事記』應神天皇 8
渡到河中之時、令傾其船、墮入水中、爾乃浮出、隨水流下。卽流歌曰、
知波夜夫流 宇遲能和多理邇 佐袁斗理邇 波夜祁牟比登斯 和賀毛古邇許牟
於是、伏隱河邊之兵、彼廂此廂、一時共興、矢刺而流。故、到訶和羅之前而沈入。訶和羅三以以音。故、以鉤探其沈處者、繋其衣中甲而、訶和羅鳴、故號其地謂訶和羅前也。爾掛出其骨之時、弟王歌曰、
知波夜比登 宇遲能和多理邇 和多理是邇 多弖流 阿豆佐由美麻由美 伊岐良牟登 許許呂波母閇杼 伊斗良牟登 許許呂波母閇杼 母登幣波 岐美袁淤母比傳 須惠幣波 伊毛袁淤母比傳 伊良那祁久 曾許爾淤母比傳 加那志祁久 許許爾淤母比傳 伊岐良受曾久流 阿豆佐由美麻由美
故其大山守命之骨者、葬于那良山也。是大山守命者、土形君、弊岐君、榛原君等之祖。
於是、大雀命與宇遲能和紀郎子二柱、各讓天下之間、海人貢大贄。爾兄辭令貢於弟、弟辭令貢於兄、相讓之間、既經多日。如此相讓、非一二時。故、海人既疲往還而泣也、故諺曰「海人乎、因己物而泣」也。然、宇遲能和紀郎子者早崩、故大雀命治天下也。
≪英訳≫
Now, when he had crossed and reached the middle of the river, he caused the ship to tip over and dropped it into the water. Thus, it floated and drifted downstream with the water. While drifting, he sang a song:
At the rapid ford of the Uji River,
Those who wish to take the oar
and cross quickly,
Come, be my companions.
Then, soldiers hidden by the river’s edge arose from various places at once, shooting arrows and attacking, causing the river to flow. Thus, they reached Kawara Cape and sank. When they searched for the place with the hook, it clung to the armor within their clothes and rattled “kawara” against it. Thus, that place came to be called Kawara no Saki(Cape). When they pulled up the corpse and sang the song, the younger prince sang:
At the rapid ford of the Uji River,
At the ford stands a catalpa bow and a mayumi tree,
Though I think to cut them,
Though I think to take them,
At the root, I remember you,
At the tip, I remember my wife,
With irritation I remember here,
With pity I remember here,
The catalpa bow and mayumi tree
I brought with me, uncut.
They buried the corpse of the OYamamori on Nara Mountain. This OYamamori is the ancestor of Lord Haji, Lord Heki, Lord Harihara, and others.
Thus, both the OSazaki and the Young Lord of Uji each took their turn ruling the world, and the fishermen presented offerings. So the elder prince refused this and had the younger prince receive them. The younger prince also had the elder prince receive them, and while they were in this exchange, many days passed. Such exchanges happened not just once or twice, so the fishermen grew tired and cried. That’s why the saying goes, ‘Because they are fishermen, they cry over what is their own.’ However, the Young Lord of Uji quickly disappeared, so the OSazaki ruled the world.
≪この英文の和訳≫
さて、彼が川を渡り、川の真ん中に到着したとき、船を傾けて水に落としました。こうして船は浮かび、水とともに下流に漂いました。漂っている間、彼は歌を歌いました。
宇治川の急流渡しの場で、
櫂(かい)を取って速やかに渡りたいと思う者たちよ、どうぞ、私の仲間となってくれ
そして、川の岸に隠れていた兵士たちが、あちこちから一斉に現れ、矢を放ち、攻撃を仕掛け、川は流れ出しました。こうして彼らは河原の埼にたどり着いて沈みました。彼らが鉤でそこを探りましたところ、衣の中の鎧にしっかりと掛かり、「カワラ」と鳴りました。こうしてその場所はカワラの埼と呼ばれるようになりました。死体を引き上げたとき、若い皇子が歌いました。
宇治川の急流渡しの場において、
渡し場に立つ梓弓とマユミの木、
切ろうと思っても、
取ろうと思っても、
根本ではあなたを思い出し、
先端では妻を思い出し、
苛立ちを感じながらここで思い出し、
哀れみを感じながらここで思い出す、
私が持ってきた、未だ切られていない梓弓とマユミの木。
オオヤマモリ(大山守)の死体は奈良山に埋葬されました。この大山守は、土形(ひじかた)の君、幣岐(へき)の君、榛原(はりはら)の君などの先祖です。
こうしてオオサザキの命(みこと)と宇治の若君は、交代で世界を治めることとなり、漁師たちが献上物を贈りました。そのため、年長の王子はこれを拒否し、年少の王子に受け取らせました。年少の王子もまた年長の王子に受け取らせ、このやり取りの間に多くの日が経過しました。このような交換は一度や二度ではありませんでしたので、漁師たちは疲れ果てて泣きました。そのため、「漁師は己がものゆえに泣く」という諺が生まれました。しかし、宇治の若君は早くお隠れになり、それによりオオサザキの命(みこと)が天下をお治めになることとなりました。
