『日本書紀』推古天皇 27
是月、葬上宮太子於磯長陵。當于是時、高麗僧慧慈、聞上宮皇太子薨、以大悲之、爲皇太子請僧而設齋。仍親說經之日、誓願曰「於日本國有聖人、曰上宮豐聰耳皇子。固天攸縱、以玄聖之德生日本之國。苞貫三統、纂先聖之宏猷、恭敬三寶、救黎元之厄。是實大聖也。今太子既薨之、我雖異國心在斷金、其獨生之何益矣。我以來年二月五日必死、因以遇上宮太子於淨土、以共化衆生。」於是、慧慈、當于期日而死之。是以、時人之彼此共言「其獨非上宮太子之聖、慧慈亦聖也。」

In this month, Prince Umayado (commonly known as Shōtoku Taishi) was buried at the Shinaga Mausoleum (磯長陵, Shinaga no misasagi). At that time, a monk from Goguryeo(高麗) named Hyeja (慧慈, Eji) had returned to his homeland. Upon hearing of the prince’s passing, he was deeply grieved and held a memorial service for the prince by gathering monks and conducting a Buddhist assembly.
On the day he personally expounded the sutras, he made a solemn vow, saying, “In Japan, there lived a sage, Crown Prince Kamitsumiya Toyotomimi (上宮豊聡耳皇子, Kamitsumiya no Toyotomimi no Mikoto). He was endowed by heaven with remarkable virtue and was born in this country as a saint of profound wisdom. He accomplished great deeds, surpassing even the sages of the Three Dynasties of China. Revering the Three Treasures (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha), he rescued the people from their suffering. Truly, he was a great sage. Now that the prince has passed away, though I come from a different land, my heart is bound to him as though forged in iron. Living alone in this world serves no purpose. On the fifth day of the second month next year, I will surely die and meet Prince Kamitsumiya in the Pure Land, where we shall together spread the teachings of Buddhism to all beings.”
True to his words, Hyeja (慧慈, Eji) passed away on the appointed day. Consequently, people at the time said, “Not only is Prince Kamitsumiya a saint, but Hyeja is also a saint.”
≪この英文の和訳≫
この月、上宮聖徳太子（じょうぐうしょうとくたいし）は磯長陵（しながのみささぎ）に葬られた。このとき、高麗の僧である慧慈（えじ）はすでに帰国していたが、太子の薨去を聞き、大いに悲しみ、太子のために僧を集めて斎会（さいえ）を開いた。
そして、自ら経を説く日において、次のように誓願した。
「日本国には偉大なる聖人がおられた。その方こそ、上宮豊聡耳皇子（かみつみやのとよとみみのみこと）である。この方は天から特別な徳を授けられ、深遠なる聖なる徳をもって日本国にお生まれになられた。偉業を成し遂げられ、中国三代の聖王をも超えるほどであった。また、この方は三宝（仏・法・僧）を敬い、国民の苦しみを救われた。まことに大聖であられる。そのような太子が今亡くなられた。私は異国の者ではあるが、太子との心の絆は断ちがたい。自分ひとりが生き残ったところで、何の益もない。私は来年の二月五日には必ずこの世を去り、上宮太子と浄土でお会いし、共に衆生に仏の教えを広めようと思う」。
そして、慧慈は自ら定めた日に、確かにその通りに亡くなった。このため、当時の人々は皆口をそろえて言った。「上宮太子のみならず、慧慈もまた聖（ひじり）である。」
