『日本書紀』推古天皇 23
十二月庚午朔、皇太子、遊行於片岡。時飢者臥道垂、仍問姓名、而不言。皇太子視之與飲食、卽脱衣裳、覆飢者而言、安臥也。則歌之曰、
＊斯那提流 箇多烏箇夜摩爾 伊比爾惠弖 許夜勢屢 諸能多比等阿波禮
於夜那斯爾 那禮奈理雞迷夜 佐須陀氣能 枳彌波夜那祗 伊比爾惠弖 許夜勢留 諸能多比等阿波禮
辛未、皇太子遣使令視飢者。使者還來之曰、飢者既死。爰皇太子大悲之、則因以葬埋於當處、墓固封也。數日之後、皇太子召近習者謂之曰「先日臥于道飢者、其非凡人、必眞人也。」遣使令視。於是、使者還來之曰「到於墓所而視之、封埋勿動。乃開以見、屍骨既空、唯衣服疊置棺上。」於是、皇太子復返使者令取其衣。如常且服矣。時人大異之曰「聖之知聖、其實哉。」逾惶。

≪英訳≫
December 1st
The Crown Prince (Prince Shōtoku) went on an excursion to Kataoka (片岡). There, he found a starving man collapsed by the roadside. The Prince asked for the man’s name, but he did not respond. The Prince gave him food, removed his own garment, covered the man with it, and said, “Rest peacefully.”
Then, he composed a song:
Shina teru, kataoka-yama ni, ihiniete, koya seru, sono tabito aware,
Oya nashi ni, nare narikeme ya, sasutake no, kimi hayanaki, ihiniete, koya seru, sono tabito aware.
〔“Under the shining sun, in the Kataoka mountains, a traveler lies,
Collapsed from hunger—how pitiable.
Surely, this is not the plight of one raised without parents.
Is there no kind companion to care for him?
Collapsed from hunger, a traveler lies—how pitiable.”〕
December 2nd
The following day, the Crown Prince sent a messenger to check on the starving man. The messenger returned and reported, “The man has already passed away.” The Prince was deeply saddened. He ordered the man to be buried at the same place and had a mound built over his grave.
Several days later, the Crown Prince spoke to his attendants, saying, “The man who lay starving on the road was no ordinary person. He must have been a holy being.” He then sent another messenger to investigate the grave.
The messenger returned and reported, “When I reached the grave, it was untouched. However, when I opened it, the body was gone. Only the clothing remained, neatly folded atop the coffin.”
Upon hearing this, the Crown Prince sent the messenger back to retrieve the garments. He resumed wearing them as before.
The people of the time were deeply astonished and said, “Indeed, a saint recognizes a saint. How true this is.” They were filled with reverence.
≪この英文の和訳≫
十二月一日
皇太子（聖徳太子）は片岡(かたおか)へお出かけになった。その途中、飢えた人が道端に倒れているのを見つけられた。皇太子はその人に名前を尋ねられたが、答えることはなかった。そこで、皇太子はその人に食べ物を与えられ、ご自身の衣服を脱いでその人にかけ、「安らかに眠れ」とおっしゃった。
その後、次の歌を詠まれた：
陽(ひ)は照る片岡山(かたおかやま)に、飢え倒れる旅人よ、
何と哀れなことである。親のない身ではないだろうに、
優しい伴侶もいないのか。飢え倒れる旅人よ、
なんと哀れであることか。
十二月二日
翌日、皇太子は使者を遣わされ、その飢えた人の様子を確認させた。使者が帰ってきて、こう報告した。
「飢えた者はすでに亡くなっておりました」。
この報告を受け、皇太子は深くお悲しみになった。そして、その場所に亡き人を埋葬し、塚を築かれた。
数日が経った後、皇太子は近習の者たちを召されてこうおっしゃった。
「先日道端に倒れていた飢えた人は、ただの人間ではあるまい。きっと聖なる存在であろう」。
皇太子は再び使者を遣わされ、その塚の様子を調べさせた。すると使者は戻ってきて次のように報告した。
「墓所に着いて確認いたしましたが、塚はそのまま動いておりませんでした。しかし、開けてみたところ、遺体はすでになく、衣服だけが棺の上にきちんと畳まれて置かれておりました」。
これを聞き、皇太子は再び使者を送り、その衣服を持ち帰らせた。そして、その衣服をかつてのように再びお召しになられた。
当時の人々はこの出来事に非常に驚き、こう言った。「聖(ひじり)は聖を知るというが、それはまさしく真実である。」彼らはますます皇太子(聖徳太子)を敬い畏れた。
