南アフリカで準大手会計事務所BDOがグラント・ソントンを統合（economiaより）

Grant Thornton will merge with BDO South Africa

準大手の会計事務所ネットワークであるBDOの南アフリカ事務所が、同業のグラント・ソントンのケープタウン事務所など2事務所を統合するという記事。

BDO South Africa have taken over two major offices of its mid-tier rival Grant Thornton

BDOは第6位の事務所ですが、第5位のグラント・ソントンの2事務所を吸収して、千人超の規模の事務所となるそうです。

BDO, the sixth biggest financial services firm, will take over the Cape Town and Port Elizabeth offices of Grant Thornton, the fifth biggest firm, on 1 March 2018.

The move will add 413 staff to BDO, including 35 partners and directors, across both Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, bringing the firm’s total South African work force to more than 1,000.

南アフリカでは、監査事務所の強制的ローテーションが導入されるようで、BDO南アフリカ事務所のCEOは、今回の合併にとって重要なのは、規模を拡大し、そうした監査業界の変動によってもたらされる機会を最大限に利用することだといっています。

“Critical to this merger is our ability to scale up and to leverage the opportunities created by the changes in the auditing profession, including the introduction of mandatory audit firm rotation,” said Mark Stewart, CEO of BDO South Africa.

当サイトでも先日取り上げましたが、南アフリカでは、大手のKPMGが政治スキャンダルに巻き込まれ、苦境に陥っています。

Financial services firms have been in the headlines recently in South Africa, following the Gupta family scandal. Big Four firm KPMG has been implicated has led to the loss of its clients and an investigation by the South African Revenue System.

The firm lost many members of its senior management in during the scandal, which revealed connections between the powerful Gupta family and South African president Jacob Zuma.

監査事務所の強制的ローテーションが導入された場合、会社としては、今使っている事務所より格下の事務所に変更するのは抵抗があるでしょう。大手は別格として、それ以下の事務所は、クライアントに選ばれるよう、合併により規模を拡大し、より上位を目指すことになるのでしょう。
