ok, in chapter 2 of this book, our dear author moved from a constable in Timaru, to a CIB detective in Christchurch. the two cases recorded in this chapter, makes me feel a bit umcorfatable.
if i would use one word each to summarise the case, I would say love-hatred and respect.
case 1 - kill you then myself
Jill and Gareth were partners. after living together for a while, Jill found out that she could no longer be in relationship with Gareth. so Jill moved out and became a flatmate with Tom, but there was nothing that happened between them. Gareth did not get out of this relationship as smooth as Jill did, and he suspected Tom was the person who broke their relationship. the more he thought, the crazier he became. so he broke into the house where Tom and Jill were staying, while both of them were out at work, with a shotgun, planning to kill Tom and Jill to avenge. Tom was the first one coming home. Gareth tied him on a chair in his bedroom, and said that he would kill him together with Jill, after Jill arrived home. while Gareth was waiting at the main entrance door, Tom managed to free himself and escaped out to the neighbour's house and reported to the police. While the police were still on their way to the house, Jill came home. the police guarded the house and tried to speak to Gareth within, and they heard the sounds of two gun shots. when they broke into the house, they only found two dead bodies. obviously, Gareth killed Jill and then himself.
although some argue that couples should live together before getting into marriage, so that they can have a so-called "trial and error" period to consider whether they two are suitable for marriage. but I still think that is why we do not encourage at all that lovers stay together before they get married. there is no such thing according to the Scripture. the Bible tells us that marriage should be respected among the believers, and no devoice is allowed. this requires much fellowship, getting to know each other, and much prayer before the two parties make the decision to marry each other. Marriage should be a serious and once for the whole life matter. nowadays, peopel can easily marry, devoice, marry again, and devoice again, as easy as go to try different coffee shops. seems like they are in a cycle, repeating what happens all the time. It was not so from the beginning, when God created man. because of the evil work of the evil one, Satan, man has become more and more fallen and corrupted. we all need the Lord Jesus, the Savior. and we all need to be dilligent to preach the gospel, to proclaim the word of God. only the humanity of Jesus can help us and solve all our problems.
case 2 - respect the prostitutes, you will never know what will happen in the future
there were three prostitutes murdered in Christchurch. the author was going to petrol the Manchester St with his colleague. I quite appreciated the view of this author toward the prostitute. this is what the author writes in his book:
"Every girl has a story to tell and a reason why they turned to prostitution. some of these stories are horrific and some heart-wrenchingly sad....It was not my role to judge anyone, nor did I have the right to do so. Given this I always treated the girls with respect, courtesy and empathy. "
some people like to judge and despise with the arguement that they choose to be prostitutes, and they deserve that. NO! you do not have the right to say so. there is only One, who has the right to judge both the living and the dead. this is the Lord Jesus. "God so loved the world." who are you, who judges and despises others? who are you, who do not love the world, the people, whom God so loved?
I could not stop laughing when I came to the end of this case. the author was taking his partener out for a dinner and parked his car on Manchester St. and half a dozen of prostitutes would came to him and ask, "are you stopping for a chat tonight?" you can imagine how would his partner look like when she saw all of these. I wonder whether they two were still able to continue their relationship after this???? hahahahahahahahahahaha
when I started reading this book, then I realise that this book is far more interesting than I expected.
i just finished chapter 1, and there are three cases recorded in this chapter, among which the two cases left me with a lot of consideration.
case 1 - a tragedy of "not doing"
this is a story of an old lady who was committing suicide by sitting in the car with motor on and a hose through the window from the exhausting system. when the police arrived, all the neighbours were standing and looking, but no one showed any intention to do something to save this lady. the lady died later on her way to the hospital. what did shock me is the three persons who were involved in this case.
the first one, let's just call him Ben, who is one of the boarders staying in the lady's house. when Ben came home from work, he passed the garage and saw the lady sitting in the car with the motor running and the hose. obviously, Ben realised that the lady was attempting to kill herself. what I cannot understand is the reaction of Ben. the only thing Ben did was that he decided to think about this while he was making a tea for himself. then the other boarder Billy came home also. Ben told Billy that their landlord lady was committing suicide. Ben and Billy went to the garage and saw what the lady was doing. by that time, the lady was only having a very weak and vague consciousness. what even shocked me was that after seeing what was happening, both of them returned to the kitchen because they wanted to make a cup of tea. after a short discussion, they decided to call one friend of the lady. and the lady's friend answered them, "don't touch anything. I am coming now". here, i feel is the climax of the whole story. this lady's friend got into the car and drove toward the lady's house. on her way, she passed by the supermarket, and she suddenly remembered that she needed to buy some grocery. so, unbelievably, at least to me, she went into the supermarket to do her shopping. so, it was more than one hour after when she arrived at the house of the suiciding lady. finally, they agreed wth each other that they should call the police. and that is how our dear author arrived the scene and we had his record of this case.
while reading this case, I can feel the sadness and sorrow within the heart of the author. too many times, people blame police not doing anything, without realising that they themselves are the ones who should be blamed most. this also made me really sad. and now I feel that I am understanding more and sympathising more with the police.
case 2 - the Old Grumpy
this is the senior constable (not sure whether this is the right word), who is nicknamed the Old Grumpy, because he is hard to cope with. and he hasn't been outside office for a patrol for quite many years. one day, the author had a task to be in the same group with the Old Grumpy. they were talking about the matter that, nowadays, people, especially, youth, the teenages, do not have any respect to police like the old days. the Old Grumpy said that they just did not know how to speak to them with the way of authority, and they would listen. in order to give the author a training lesson. the Old Grumpy went to a patrol with the author, and they found a teenager walking on the road. so the Old Grumpy tried to talk to him a few times with his so-called way of authority. but the teenager did not turn to him at all, and even spat toward him on the ground.
Romans 3:10 Even as it is written, "There is none righteous, not even one;
Romans 3:11 There is none who understands, there is none who seeks out God.
Romans 3:18 There is no fear of God before their eyes.''
this is quite the case of this dark and crooked age. people, especially the young generation, are lacking more and more respect, and the standard of morality is also going down and down. Being fashioned according to the age, young people consider "fearless" as cool. but this is not the way. we need to have the proper fear toward God. we know, there is God. and our God is sitting on the throne, sovereign over everything and all things. one day, when the Lord comes back, there will be judgement carried out, and we all need to give an account, and bear the consequence. therefore, while we are still living on the earth, we need to be under the ruling of the Lord, obeying the inner restriction and regulation of the Spirit.
Romans 12:2 And do not be fashioned according to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of the mind that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and well pleasing and perfect.
May we be rescued from this evil age, by allowing the Lord to renew our mind and transfrom us day by day.
