4068．Oh-bako

　北見から国道39号線を西進する。石北峠を越えて層雲峡エリアに入る。国道273 号線との分岐点を
さらに進むと大函に至る。国道脇に駐車場があり、見事な柱状節理のさまを観ることができる。

　何年ぶりだろうか。最初にこの地を訪れたのは1984年夏だ。当時は、旧国道を利用した遊歩道から
小函を観ることができた。今では遊歩道が通行止めになっているため、こちらは断念した。とにかく
圧巻の景色が広がるこのエリア。層雲峡温泉を拠点に、小函に加えて雲井ノ滝、錦糸の滝、神削岩、
岩間の滝、早乙女の滝にも訪れてみたい。

　Obako pronounced "oh-bako"


Obako is a deep valley located on the east of the Daisetsuzan Mountain Range. Some 30,000 years
ago, a volcano at Ohachi-daira erupted, where pyroclasic flow deposits (such as hot gas, hot ash and
volcanic rocks) cooled and caused shrinkage cracks to form in square and hexagonal patterns. This is
geologically called welded tuff, createed by the phenomenon of columnar jointing.
After covering the entirely Sounkyo, these deposits were eroded away by the Ishikari River over a period
10,000 years, shaping today's gorge.
