(October 20, 2008) -- Georgia should commute the death sentence of Troy Anthony Davis, who is scheduled to be executed on October 27, Human Rights Watch said today in a letter to Governor Sonny Perdue and the Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles.
デイビスは、１９８９年、休暇中の警官に対する殺人罪で有罪判決を受けているが、これまで一貫して無罪であると主張して来ている。裁判で彼に不利な証言をした証人の多くは以降それを撤回し、彼を当該犯罪に結びつける物的証拠はない。デイビスの処刑に明確に反対している人々の中に、ローマ法王ベネディクト16世、前米国大統領ジミー・カーター、ノーベル平和賞受賞者デスモンド・ツツなどがいる。
Davis was convicted of the 1989 murder of an off-duty police officer, but has always maintained his innocence. Many of the witnesses who testified against him at his trial have since recanted, and no physical evidence links him to the crime. Pope Benedict XVI, former President Jimmy Carter, and Nobel laureate Desmond Tutu are among those who have spoken out against executing Davis.
