『日本書紀』 国産み 4
次生月神。一書云「月弓尊、月夜見尊、月讀尊。」其光彩亞日、可以配日而治。故、亦送之于天。次生蛭兒。雖已三歲、脚猶不立、故載之於天磐櫲樟船而順風放棄。次生素戔嗚尊。一書云「神素戔嗚尊、速素戔嗚尊。」此神、有勇悍以安忍、且常以哭泣爲行。故、令國內人民多以夭折、復使靑山變枯。故、其父母二神、勅素戔嗚尊「汝甚無道。不可以君臨宇宙。固當遠適之於根國矣。」遂逐之。
一書曰、伊弉諾尊曰「吾欲生御宇之珍子。」乃以左手持白銅鏡則有化出之神、是謂大日孁尊。右手持白銅鏡則有化出之神、是謂月弓尊。又廻首顧眄之間則有化神、是謂素戔嗚尊。卽大日孁尊及月弓尊並是質性明麗、故使照臨天地。素戔嗚尊、是性好殘害、故令下治根國。珍、此云于圖。顧眄之間、此云美屢摩沙可梨爾。
一書曰、日月既生。次生蛭兒、此兒年滿三歲、脚尚不立。初、伊弉諾、伊弉冉尊巡柱之時、陰神先發喜言、既違陰陽之理、所以、今生蛭兒。次生素戔嗚尊、此神性惡、常好哭恚、國民多死、靑山爲枯。故、其父母勅曰「假使汝治此國、必多所殘傷。故汝、可以馭極遠之根國。」

Next came the Moon Deity. In one account, he named Moon Bow, Moon Night-View, and Moon Reading. His radiance rivals that of the sun, and he can govern alongside the sun. Thus, he was also sent to the heavens. Next came the leech child. Three years old, his feet still wouldn’t stand, so it was carried on the Camphor Boat and abandoned to the wind. Next came the Deity of Good and Evil, also known as the Speedy Deity of Good and Evil. This deity was brave and patient but frequently engaged in weeping. As a result, many people in the country met an untimely death, and it caused the green mountains to wither. Consequently, the deity’s parents decreed to the Deity of Good and Evil, ‘You are greatly wayward and cannot rule the universe. You should be banished to a distant land.’ They were thus exiled.
In one account, Izanagi-no-Mikoto said, ‘I wish to produce precious children for the palace.’ He then held a bronze mirror in his left hand, and from it emerged a deity called Oho-Hirume-no-Mikoto (Great Sun Female Deity). Holding a bronze mirror in his right hand, another deity emerged, known as Tsuki-Yomi-no-Mikoto (Moon Bow Deity). When he turned and gazed in the space between, a deity called Susano’o-no-Mikoto (the Deity of Good and Evil) was born. Both Oho-Hirume-no-Mikoto and Tsuku-Yomi-no-Mikoto had splendid natures, thus illuminating heaven and earth. Susano’o-no-Mikoto, with a cruel disposition, governed the land of roots. The term “precious” refers to the idea of shaping. Gazing in the space between refers to creating beauty repeatedly.
In one account, after the sun and moon were born, the leech child was born next. This child, who had reached three years of age, still couldn’t stand on their feet. Initially, when Izanagi and Izanami were performing the Pillar Circumambulation, the Yin Deity manifested, expressing joy. In contravention of the principles of Yin and Yang, this is the reason the leech child was born now. The next to be born was Susano’o-no-Mikoto, a deity with wicked tendencies, prone to weeping and causing the death of many citizens, with the green mountains withering. Therefore, his parents decreed, ‘If you were to govern this land, you would surely cause great harm. Thus, you should rule a distant land.’”
